This is the underrated game of the month, where I take time to write an article based on a game that I think did not deserve the negative fame (or no fame) that it received. What was so bad about Yoshi Story? This game was not that bad, it was not that bad. Critics absolutely bombed this game and fans did not buy it as much as Nintendo would have hoped. But the game WAS very good, but it had to match the quality of Yoshi¿s island, which was impossible, trust me, it was impossible. This game had a very good soundtrack, had decent gameplay, and had a lot of extra features and things to collect after you beat the game. Yoshi¿s Story was not a classic but still was not a catastrophe.
The graphics in this game were impressive; they were very good. Even today, they rival against the cheap PS2 games. Basically, you had to collect fruit to be happy and end the evil of Baby Bowser. There were 6 levels to go through, and about a total of 20 stages. It was not hard at all, but getting all 20 stages was actually a challenge, even though you did not have to do that. The controls were easy to learn, easy to master; it was pretty much a kiddie game. The soundtrack was great. My favorite includes the rap song, and the jungle songs, with the heavy beating of drums. As I said before, the game I not hard, but it made up for it with it¿s replay value. Collecting all 20 stages would keep you busy for a while, plus you had to try to find the two hidden Yoshis. And then there is also the thing with trying to collect all 30 melons in every level, tough to do.
Bottom Line: This game was not THAT bad. I own it and play it from time to time. I also love the soundtrack. It was not the best game, but I think it deserves more than it got, considering that it had to follow-up to Yoshi¿s Island, perhaps the best SNES game ever. Yoshi¿s Story, victim of having to follow-up to a great game, like Super Mario World 2. Other victims include Majora¿s Mask, Tenken 3, Wario Land 3&4, Super Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime, GTA: Vic City, Tony Hawk 3, and Star Fox 64. Yoshi Story, just another victim in the cruel world of video game competition.
