I have never much cared for japanese roleplaying games, Besides Chrono Trigger and FF7, which are great. But after finishing FF7 I was in a mood to try some more jrpg, I saw Ys had just been released on the pc and decided to try it, it started of great, great art, wonderfull music, cute characters, very well realised world, you can basicly talk to everyone in the first town, read books, get to know the world which seems very well done, then after about half an hour, I decided to try the combat and holy hell... are they serious? You just... bump into the enemies? no strategy (except not approach from the front) or thought... just bump into them and hope for the best... it's not fun, it's annoying and for someone expecting a roleplay game it's a real slap in the face.
If this game was in the same vein as Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger... that is with a combat system that, while flawed, at least has some thought to it, it would be great fun. But as it is, with this awful combat system, it makes you feel very ripped off and sad and disappointed because this otherwise nice game is completely ruined by it.
