0D Beat Drop has stolen my soul and will not give it back.
As far as puzzle games go, this one is pretty straightforward. You are given a clump of 3 multi-colored blocks that slowly float down the screen and are tasked with rotating said clump in order to make strings of like-colored blocks. Sound familiar? Probably because most puzzle games on the market do something very similar. But the twist occurs when you factor in chaining, hyper combos, and the Beat Drop mechanic. Chaining occurs when you line up groups of blocks so they all break at the same time, giving you a nice bonus. Hyper combos occur when you are seriously covered in blocks and need the extra help. The Beat Drop is how you actually break all your nicely lined-up chains of colored blocks, by dropping your current clump of blocks on top of them in time with the music. Yes, this is also a music game and actually comes with a decent selection of tracks which you can augment with your own via USB drive. The game is actually very good at analyzing your music and putting the beat in the correct place.
Another interesting twist in this game is that it is competitive. You can either play 1 vs 1 matches, 2 vs 2 matches, 4 player free-for-all, time attack, or task. Of these, only time attack and task are not played against an opponent and they are quite honestly the weakest of the modes. Although the online competition is fierce, at the current time few people are playing, which is a shame because playing online is mostly lag-free and can be insanely fun and competitive.
So there you have it. I admit, I love this game in spite of it being a puzzle game. After having enjoyed it so much, I am tempted to try some more puzzle games and see if I like them anywhere near as much!
