2K building up Steam

Publisher joins ranks of third-party publishers distributing games via Valve Software's digital distribution service; Civilization III and IV due later this week.

Two weeks ago, Activision announced it would distribute several of its most popular PC games, including Call of Duty 2, via Valve Software's Steam download service. The move surprised many, since Valve had previously signed a deal with the publisher's archnemesis, Electronic Arts, which distributes retail copies of the Washington-based developer's popular shooter Half-Life 2.

Now, another EA rival has struck a deal with the megapublisher's partner. Today, Take-Two Interactive subsidiary 2K announced that it, too, would sell games via Steam. The first batch of games, which are due later this week, will include two top strategy titles from Firaxis Games: Civilization III and Civilization IV. Also included will be the high-seas adventure Sid Meier's Pirates! and the alternate-history real-time strategy game Shattered Union.

"We are excited to add Valve to our roster of partners in the digital distribution area," said Paul Crockett, an executive in 2K's strategic sales and licensing department. "Being included in their vast network will assist us in expanding the reach of our products to a much larger audience."

According to a statement released today by Valve, Steam currently has some 10 million customers for both its "core" products--which include advanced shooters such as Half-Life 2--and casual games, such as PopCap Games' Bejeweled and Zuma.

The digital distribution model is cool, and great for those folks that "gotta have it now". They are good for smaller publishers in able to get exposure and a conduit to sell their games. My problem is that digital publishing had a downside. I like the packaging and the book, and whatever thing the publisher includes to enhance the game experience (maps, overlays, keyguides, etc.). With the digital model, you got nada. And this is all at the same price as retail (or highr since it is often single-source. So theoretically, the publisher *could* make more per item, but I doubt it. Rather I bet with no physical material cost (except bandwidth charges), that the conduit probably profits MORE than the conventional model.

That's kinda cool but I find it really annoying that I have to get these "Steam Update News" things that don't even tell me about MY games. I get on there for Counter-Strike, not CoD2 or some lame RPG. Still, if this promotes the industry and more games get in more hands i'll deal with it.

steam hasnt, and never will sign a deal with anyone. Steam is just the software remember. Valve does the signing and running of steam.... i dont think ill buy many of the new games coming to steam because i will have either bought them retail when they came out...or i DIDNT buy them in retail cause i didnt care about them...its the NEW games that im more interested it since Steam saves me about $20-30 with each new game after currency conversion.

I only installed steam because I had to... I'm not going to encourage companies to use programs like that by patronizing them more than it takes to play Half-Life 2.

wow . i'm surprised on how steam has evolved over the years . one of these days its gonna be the premire way to buy and play pc games . now if only they could strike a deal with microsoft and have steam integrated into windows . then pc gaming would achieve a level of simplicity and ease to the level of console gaming . would be a great way to get non-pc gamers to start playing .

Steam didn't sign on with EA, Death_Masta, they're simply in charge of supplying the store version of Half-Life 2.

steam, please take over the world, you would make it a much more organized place to live, and ain't dat da trooth... steam rocks, hated it at first, but it was my internet connections fault, so that is null and void... you want a game, they give you a cheap price, pre-load it, noon the day of it's release, wake up and play, not bad my friends, not bad

Valve is awesome, I'm happy for their successes with Steam - although when Steam was first released I despised it... (WON FOREVER! lol) but I've grown to like it.

Maybe once I can be assured that Digital Distribution is safe, e.g., a corrupt file in the game screws it up but it was downloaded, so now you don't have a disc to re-install, then maybe I'll look into it. But until then ... spawn of the DEVIL!!!

I love digital distribution. The next console generations will likely be heavily digital-distribution driven.

Hell yeah, always loved STEAM. Never gave me problems, like some people report. Oh, and I never expected Steam to colllect big publishers like these, definately great news.

I've liked Valve a long time, but Steam has taken a while to grow on me. It's good to watch the system grow in quality. Not too crazy about EA though. Then again, a company that publishes that many games is bound to have quite a few sour titles.
