Classic gaming company Coleco is making a comeback, albeit in name only. The company that now owns the rights to the classic company's name has announced a partnership with Retro Video Game Systems for a cartridge-based console it's calling Coleco Chameleon.

No Caption Provided

It's described as a "versatile new video game system that serves as a modern day take on the classic game console." It can play 8-, 16-, and 32-bit games, which Coleco Holdings says is a "growing and popular genre."

Retro Video Game Systems previously attempted to launch this system as the Retro VGS with a crowdfunding campaign that didn't pan out. This rebranded version of the system still plays cartridge games, making it the first console in about two decades to do that. It also uses the original manufacturing molds for the Atari Jaguar, which the company acquired the rights to earlier this year.

In a statement, Retro Video Game Systems president Mike Kennedy said the console "is a love-letter to all the classic cartridge based gaming systems that came before it."

"It will take gamers and their families back to a simpler time where games were all about great gameplay and fun factor," he added. The original ColecoVision console was released in 1982.

Pricing was not announced. But writing on Twitter, developers said "it will be significantly more affordable than the first go-around," referencing the aforementioned failed crowdfunding campaign for the Retro VGS.

The Coleco Chameleon will be available to buy in early 2016 and will be on display at the Toy Fair New York in February. You can learn more about the console on its website.

A 25 gb Blue ray disk is roughly 0.50 cent

but a usb/sd is around 20 euro/dollar. Just saying.

Someone mentioned SD cards and this would actually be a technological advancement for video games, to be honest.

There's no reason whatsoever for games to not be on SD or USB or MicroSD right now, instead of slow shitty bluray and dvd discs. It has to be some kind of stupid business arrangement that continues to give profit to Sony and other companies that sees all games still releasing on optical after 20 years. Any of those choices, USB or SD, are all much faster, much easier to store, much better value, and are inexpensive.

Like, why did these consoles rely on their BD drives for the games? It should only have been included as a method to watch movies. It's not as if BD drives are expensive. They're literally the same price as DVD drives now.

Oh but right, people would cry if the price of their games jumped an extra $20 to reflect the price of good technology.

@ughz: Yea, Microsoft tried to put the motion in to start skipping discs in general and go with hard drives remember? XBox One, currently losing horribly in sales to Sony. It's about what the public wants. Blu-ray discs still work, so don't fix. Yes. SD would be better as well as battery powered cars, no cigarettes, and no liquor. It's all about what the public wants.

@shiss27: A) That has nothing to do with what I said. Digital only games that have to be installed to hard drive and otherwise only exist as a receipt are not the same as shipping physical games on modern media.

B) That also has nothing to do with why Microsoft is "losing horribly". Which they aren't. They're 2:1 behind and they've pulled out all the stops to close the gap. You simply can't make up for rabid ignorance and fanboyism, which is 100% what is keeping the shelves empty of PS4s - not anything Sony is doing or has done in the past 2 years. Sony and MS both lost horribly to Nintendo last generation, so by your logic, should I conclude that MS and Sony suck?

C) The public doesn't know what the public wants because the public is fucking stupid. There's literally no evidence to the contrary. If they actually understood how much more efficient it would be to stop using outdated optical media, and saw it in real life, they'd want it. People don't have the attachment to inanimate junk that everyone assumes they do. As long as it comes in the same case and works the same, no one will bat an eye.

Microsoft had the right idea, but everyone wanted to cry and bitch about the NSA and PRISM and their poor internet connections (the only legitimate point that was made). And it wasn't even their idea.

@ughz: SD cards are great, but they don't hold data for longer than a few years.

@ughz: Yes it is true. Why do you think they AREN'T making SD cards into games medium? SD cards hold data by sandwiching electrons between layers of silicon. As opposed to actually physically stamping an image into a disc, as with CD, DVD and Bluray. If that SD card doesn't have power go to it once every few years, you lose your data.

@RossRichard: It's factually not true. SD cards and USB cards can last 10 years easily, and considering it would literally only be used for reading the game, then it wouldn't run the risk of dying early. Why console games haven't switched to a better medium has absolutely nothing to do with the technology being reliable. It's a business agreement that keeps dvds and blu rays in use.

@ughz: Do you honestly believe Microsoft would give money to Sony if they didn't have to? Notice the 360 didn't use Bluray, only the XBone does. If SD cards were feasible for physical releases, MS wouldn't be using Bluray. I promise you.

Give me a phone with physical game controls that can natively play indie Steam games. I'll pay out the ass for something like that.

In all honesty: who needs this? They should have taken the failed crownfunding campaign as a sign. If I wanted to play really old games I could do that in plenty of other ways. But what games will run on that thing anyway? Crappy, modern retro games?

I see why they are producing this console, it's a pain in the ass to get very heavy data updates on everything. It will be very "niche", put some decent games (aka emulators on HD) on it and I might get this.

Interesting thing to note, the console looks more than a little bit like the Atari Jaguar.

I'd like to be optimistic about this and believe this will be successful but history tells me it won't be. There's just no room for something new to even with good ideas behind it. So many of these types of things have come and gone over the years. I'm actually surprised that anyone wants to try this when the chances of success are slim to none.

They call them cards but the media for 3DS and Vita are both pretty much cartridges only flat. Just sayin'...

I really do not see how this is not just going to be a less convenient way of playing indie games. It's cool on the surface but just really not practical in any sense. I might get one if it's really cheap just for grins but it will probably sit next to my TV for a couple years, unused, then tucked away in a box for the rest of its existence.

It can play 8-, 16-, and 32-bit games, which Coleco says it is a "growing and popular genre."

Did someone just open a time capsule and pull Coleco out? Is this what they've been working on for the last 35 years? Get a clue. Retro-games are a niche market, not a growing genre.

The controller is an SNES controller with analog sticks. I predict this will do about as well as the OUYA.

don't like the thumbstick placement on the right, they were probably too worried about copying one of the other controllers designs but either both should have been downlow (like sony) or at least the right one.

I'm sure it will be nice. But, for people saying that they really need to be playing in under a minute, I never even thought about it like that. And I had all of the first consoles that came out. Also, the earliest computers. Imagine having to actually enter a run command to start playing!?!?!?

8, 16 and 32 bit games, right on the indie developers alley.

I doubt indie developers manufacturing cartridges would be better cost-effective than offering their games via digital.
