Classic gaming company Coleco is making a comeback, albeit in name only. The company that now owns the rights to the classic company's name has announced a partnership with Retro Video Game Systems for a cartridge-based console it's calling Coleco Chameleon.

No Caption Provided

It's described as a "versatile new video game system that serves as a modern day take on the classic game console." It can play 8-, 16-, and 32-bit games, which Coleco Holdings says is a "growing and popular genre."

Retro Video Game Systems previously attempted to launch this system as the Retro VGS with a crowdfunding campaign that didn't pan out. This rebranded version of the system still plays cartridge games, making it the first console in about two decades to do that. It also uses the original manufacturing molds for the Atari Jaguar, which the company acquired the rights to earlier this year.

In a statement, Retro Video Game Systems president Mike Kennedy said the console "is a love-letter to all the classic cartridge based gaming systems that came before it."

"It will take gamers and their families back to a simpler time where games were all about great gameplay and fun factor," he added. The original ColecoVision console was released in 1982.

Pricing was not announced. But writing on Twitter, developers said "it will be significantly more affordable than the first go-around," referencing the aforementioned failed crowdfunding campaign for the Retro VGS.

The Coleco Chameleon will be available to buy in early 2016 and will be on display at the Toy Fair New York in February. You can learn more about the console on its website.

@Chatch09: You forgot the "Fucking damnit it won't start." *Eject cartridge. Blow on cartridge ever so lovingly. Blow into console ever so lovingly. Make sure there is no dust. Very gently place cartridge back into console and gently use power switch. Rinse and repeat after even more gently ejecting cartridge."

And no it has nothing to do with how well you stored your games. Even if they were vacuum sealed. I had an NES a few years back with a pristine collection of cartridges, the only one that worked out of about 80 was punch out.

And you're also ignoring that cartridge games did have all that logo bullshit. NBA Jam had it, Chrono Trigger had it and all the Final Fantasies and SMRPG had a Squaresoft logo (albeit maybe just one), all the Mortal Kombats, TNMT, Battletoads, Turok, Turok 2, Goldeneye, CBFD, and plenty of others. Unless it was a first party title.

That shit didn't get bad until PS2 generation, and you can thank EA for another thing with their mandatory "EA: Challenge your Patience" logo screens that couldn't be skipped ever.

Could be extremely cool although I need to know what games may be coming out on it and what the prices will be.

Maybe I'm not old enough to be blinded by the idea of nostalgia but that's the dumbest thing I've seen. Even the Alienware will do better than this garbage.

Oh but cartridges is the selling point >__> . . . You know what also plays cartridges. Smaller, less clunky ones? A 3DS! Welcome to the 21st century.

@RSM-HQ: 3DS isn't a console and even an ant is too big to use a 3DS. You'll understand when you grow into your big boy hands.

@Chatch09: Enough to play games like Monster Hunter 4G and Xenoblade Chronicles 3D which is probably more than this piece of trash will handle.

This is looking like a scam targeted towards naive older gamers. It will only get support if it sells, which it won't almost certainly. Look at the controller, it's a mess, and the console looks questionably unreliable.

Why would I want dual sticks for a retro gaming experience? EDIT: Oh, well, it can play 32-bit games, it's ok, but I think I'll pass.

Good, a console that reads cartridges, now you only need people to make games for those cartridges!

We don't need a retro OUYA....

Guess they found enough of the E.T. dump site to recycle the cartridges. Brings me back, I love it. (until EA gets a hold of it)

Considering everyone complains about the 8-bit style games when they come with Gold or Plus, I don't think this is what people want. I don't. Not a de-evolution.

@ticklemepink: With a lot of products we've seen and especially Gamestop's move into the retro market I feel like there has to be some kinda decent sized market.

So a ColecoVision in an Atari Jaguar shell with a Wii U third party pro controller. This time with 8Bit, 16bit, 32bit Games as "Genres" this time around. A return to videogames released on Cartridge form. A Return to Retro form.

I am in. Hopefully this will come in the traditional Console, all your hook ups with 2 controllers and a pack in game for $250.00 The Coleco Cameleon will also come in the Core SKU as well. With just the console all your hook ups and just 1 controller. For $129.99

a new console in 2016, The return of Coleco? Well see.... I like the idea.

"Classic gaming company Coleco is making a comeback." No it's not. The Coleco that produced the ColecoVision went out of business in 1988. This is a reboot of the failed Retro VGS, and the parent company has licensed the Coleco name to put on their console.

@RossRichard: Does not matter if Coleco went out of business, if a product comes out with the name Coleco it is a reboot as well as a comeback.. The only thing that changed is the people that was part of the company years ago.

I noticed this the controller has no home button. I could understand if when a game is inserted it will boot in to the game but does it have not built in os of anykind even for like simple config stuff? If this system as internet connectivity it could be really cool. Online multiplayer bomberman comes to mind.

Coleco Vision was the only system I ever got as a kid. Didn't get another one til 360.

There were really a lot of great games on Coleco. Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Qbert, Turbo, Burger Time, Xaxxon and plenty more games you would see at the local arcade at that time

It was pretty fun.

"It will take gamers and their families back to a simpler time where games were all about great gameplay and fun factor"

That's fantastic, only thing is... that's why I own a Wii U and 3DS. They need to show off a bit more of this if they want it to be a worthwhile purchase for gamers imo.

Eh, they'l find their niche though and its always nice seeing love letters to retro gaming like this one. Will keep an eye on it.

"Cartridge based" is pretty vague. Is it gonna play old games or will an entire line of new games be released for it? Its a interesting concept thats for sure. Ill keep my eyes peeled on this one.

@jonnybrownieboy: Yup I'm also wondering. The name Chameleon also seems to suggest it will handle old cartridges from other systems but again, I can't tell, at least not from this article alone.

Unfortunately, I have already been seduced by the digital-distribution side. I don't want to swap cartridges, I don't want to go to the store... and seriously, if they're classic-style "8, 16, and 32-bit" games why would I think downloading them would be a chore? They'd be down in minutes.

@elheber: Sounds like you need to get up and get some exercise. Just kidding but it did come off like you don't want to do anything but sit there.

All jokes aside. I too am on the digital side of things. Including emulation. Which already allows me to play everything retro gaming has to offer. That being said, this is a great thing to come out in this day and age. Just for those who never really got to experience the old days of cartridge gaming. Collectors and those who just want the experience of old school gaming can't go wrong with this.

That looks cool. The controller looks a bit shit though, even though they're symmetrical the way they're suppose to be, after all who the ****'s got one thumb quite a bit longer than the other?... microsoft! But they're a bit too high up, the x y a & b buttons should be swapped with the analog stick, same for the other side and the d-pad.

Old school for the new gen.
