Activision Blizzard to separate from Vivendi in $8.2 billion deal

Call of Duty publisher purchases business for $5.83 billion in stock; Bobby Kotick and Brian Kelly to personally contribute $100 million as part of the deal.

Game publisher giant Activision Blizzard will separate from its parent, Vivendi, the company has announced; the deal is reportedly worth $8.2 billion.

No Caption Provided

The buyback was orchestrated by Activision Blizzard’s management team, in conjunction with investors. As a result of the trade, the controlling stake in the business will be owned by shareholders.

The purchase will see around 429 million shares change hands, totalling roughly $5.83 billion in cash. Activision CEO Bobby Kotick and co-chairman Brian Kelly are responsible for the purchase of 172 million shares, worth an estimated $2.34 billion. The pair have personally contributed $100 million to secure the sale. As a result, Brian Kelly will become sole chairman under the restructure, with Vivendi retaining a minority 12 percent stake in the business.

In a statement following the news, Kotick said the change represents a significant opportunity for Activision Blizzard moving forward. "We should emerge even stronger,” he said. “The transactions announced today will allow us to take advantage of attractive financing markets, while still retaining more than $3 billion cash on hand to preserve financial stability."

Activision Blizzard currently expects to report $4.31 billion in revenue for this financial year, up from a previous forecast of $4.22 billion for the period.

In May this year, Vivendi chief financial officer Philippe Capron said the company was exploring a "variety of options" to unload the Call of Duty and World of Warcraft company. Potential purchasers included Microsoft, Time Warner, Tencent, and Disney, as well as private equity organisations.

@strongmokus I'm not sure if their particular solutions are the best either, but it's inspiring and thought provoking, and at least it shows in what kind of direction we -could- make it work. Priority as I see it is to bring down this hugely destructive system before it's too late, and step by step reach a new sustainable world.

@bluefox755 Watch Zeitgeist and you might get an idea of other alternatives. There are thousand other solutions on what we can do, but none of these solutions can get hold as long as these billionaires and predators keep lobbying and mutating our societies into selfish degenerate rat holes.

@Vienreich @JediLegacy @strongmokus Blame it on their governments, it sucks, but what can we do about it? Those large amounts of money exist because the opportunity to create them exists. Companies create goods, jobs, and services, and people voluntarily fork over their dollars. What do you propose? The government intervene and demand another 20% charity tax from these businesses so we can feed hungry people overseas? Everyone would go out of business. Then we'd be hungry too. It's unfortunate the way things are around the world, but the solution has to start from within. If there's anything we can learn from the US government, throwing money at a problem fixes absolutely nothing.

@Vienreich Everyone who contradict you is stupid? I'm from Romania (Transylvania region), a pretty poor country, but you know why it is poor? Because most of the citizens are LEAZY. In some regions of the country (especially Moldova) people are actually waiting americans (US), germans and other westerns, to give them money or nice stuff for free.

@Vienreich @strongmokus It's business. How much have you contributed to non-profit organizations? Probably not even a tenth of what you've contributed to organizations involving entertainment, and even if you did the money you gave to those profitable businesses has increased in their pockets exponentially.

Every DVD you buy, every toy your purchase, every iTunes download you make is money given to the entertainment company which then can put it back into making products for you to buy. With a non-profit it's going straight from your pocket to someone elses, with you never seeing the results (financially speaking). On the other hand you WILL eventually buy from an entertainment business again a product that was made by your very funds, starting the cycle over. Thus, any profitable business will accumulate exponentially more funds than a non-profit based on this principle alone. It's not morals. It's business.

Economics. It works, bitches.

@Vienreich @strongmokus That's how much the company is worth, what's so wrong about it? Their assets are worth that much money. It's like saying its wrong your house is worth, for example, 200.000$. Your logic is that stupid.

@AngelsongCA @godonholiday @SirNormanislost Keep in mind this $8B company employs thousands of people, provides products for manufacturing plants to produce (disks, packaging), which then needs to be moved by delivery services to places like walmart or gamestop where yet again thousands more are employed.

@rannoni @AngelsongCA @strongmokus Something seen as good, isn't the same as something that is actually good. i.e. Selflessness.

Religion isn't good in general, it's man made. Love for others makes people do good. People develop that love in many different ways.

These times dont differ from any other, dont kid yourself. The amounts may have changed, but nothing else.

We should want our business to do well and be massive, the more they earn, the more tax they should pay, the more people they employ, the more out sourcing they do, the more research they do, the more competition they get.

Only the losers cry about it, the rest dust them selves off and try again or win.

@AngelsongCA @strongmokus "They aren't all the same. You can't lump them together."

errr isnt that what you are doing with:

"The only exception is the Churches and charities. "

This will go round and round. The idea that you have to be religious to do good is wrong.

If someone else can help others in a way the church can't, how does that discount the good works that a church does? Helping is helping.

@strongmokus @AngelsongCA You can't fake doing good, either you are or you aren't. If you're faking then you're doing nothing. If you aren't then people are being helped.

Any churches that are faking are evil. They aren't all the same. You can't lump them together.

@AngelsongCA People are the only creatures on the planet that can fake everything, even doing good things. So don't make comparisons with trees. There are many churches just to control the mass, masking there nature by doing, seemingly, good deeds.

@Vienreich @AngelsongCA @Shadow_Fax @SirNormanislost Just because someone labels themselves as christian doesn't mean they are one.

A tree is known by it's fruit. If you produce devastation for greed, you're doing evil obviously. Focus on the ones doing good for others, not the posers pretending.

@AngelsongCA @Shadow_Fax @SirNormanislost Last time I checked "christianity" was on a so called crusade in middle east devastating everything for some oil and revenue. We're living in the age of Neo-liberalism where the weak are viewed as lazy and guilty and the thieves (banks and corporations) are viewed as the liberators. This is a very very strange time in human history.

@Shadow_Fax @strongmokus @MJ12-Conspiracy Funny you say that, They merged with activision about mid into WOTLK expansion. Before that blizz were strickly against micro transactions when it came to their sub based game...They felt like it betrayed their customers...Fast forward to today and they seem to be going crazy with their cash store as of lately. Id be willing to bet it was Activision who whispered into their ear about the whole thing.

@wexorian It dropped to 7.7 million, and you consider this a "defeat"? The game is out 9 years now, and among the p2p MMORPGs, it still has like 10 times the subscription base of the rest.
