After Criticism Of Lack Of Xbox One Games, Microsoft Creates New Studio And Buys Four Others

Microsoft is making moves.

Microsoft has been criticized in the past for not having enough exclusives. Presumably in response to that feedback, the company announced during its E3 2018 briefing today that it has acquired or established five new studios to work under the Microsoft Studios umbrella.

The first is the Santa Monica-based The Initiative, which is being headed up by former Tomb Raider boss Darrell Gallagher. The studio is currently building a team of "world class talent" to develop "groundbreaking new game experiences."

Microsoft also announced that it has acquired State of Decay developer Undead Labs and Forza Horizon studio Playground Games. Spencer confirmed that Playground is making a brand-new game, which is rumored to be Fable 4.

What's more, Microsoft also acquired We Happy Few developer Compulsion Games and Hellblade developer Ninja Theory. Check out Ninja Theory's video above to hear the studio explain why it joined Microsoft Studios.

For the studio acquisitions, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said the teams will have "creative independence." Microsoft's investment gives the teams more resources to take "bigger risks" and make "bolder worlds." Go to GameSpot's E3 2018 hub to get a full rundown of all the big news from the show.

@soliaired50: Heavenly Sword is an IP owned by Sony. They can make a sequel, it will just have to be given to another studio. But I don't think they have any interest in it. Both HS and HB had complete stories and don't need sequels.

Why Ninja Theory wtf. Goodbye and good luck, I guess.

Edit: I had to shed a tear after seeing the list of the many good dev studios that have died since 2006. No wonder single player games are in a state of decay.

I'm kind of astonished that the Xbox hasn't wound up in the same boat as Sega consoles at this point.

@masonshoemocker: So did Sega. I'm not saying Microsoft is going to exit the gaming scene, but the Xbox... perhaps.

@redhedjack: NO, Sega as a company was struggling financially at the end of the Dreamcast era...but their executives over in Japan were doing quite well as one loaned (ended up gifting) something like $500 million to keep the company afloat a little longer. Then they were acquired by Sammy. Doesn't sound like a company that was financially sound now, does it?

@redhedjack: who do you think have more money to burn, Sega or M$? Sega was bleeding dollars so they had to exit. If M$ ever quits Xbox it will be because they got bored at gaming and not because of money.

@jyml8582: As I said, Microsoft, like Sega, isn't going anywhere. The company will no doubt stay afloat without worry. I'm only referring to their position in the console market. It's no secret the Xbox One was, in the grand scheme of things, a failure, unfortunately.

There goes a good handful of studios that will become "game as a service" developers. What a pity.

It took a while (like a really long time.) but it seems Microsoft finally got the hint. Some of those studios they acquired are no slouches either.

Still can't believe they acquired Ninja Theory. That is huge!
