The Stomping Land, a planned multiplayer dinosaur-survival game that raised $114,000 on Kickstarter, is now in a critical state with its art lead quitting and its creator not responding to emails.

In June 2013, The Stomping Land Kickstarter project managed to raise more than $114,000 from 4,400 backers, having initially only asked for $20,000.

A year later, a first build of the project was published on Steam Early Access, and at the time its lead developer--Alex Fundora--assured that "even though the game is available, development is still in full force."

However, this would mark the final update on the game's Kickstarter page. Now, the game's lead artist has quit the project and says he hasn't been able to establish contact with Fundora in weeks.

In-game model designer, Vlad Konstantino, wrote on The Stomping Land forums: "More than a month has passed since the day when I received the last reply from Fundora. I've sent him five messages and haven't got any single reply."

Konstantino also claimed that Fundora owes him money, and that "if this silence continues I will stop my participation in TSL and start taking the necessary measures to cover my expenses."

The message, first brought to light by PC Gamer, adds that Konstantino is now working on a different project entirely.

One backer, who said they had invested $90 in The Stomping Land, has informed Kickstarter of the issue, but the crowd-funding site could only offer an apology in return.

It is not clear if Kickstarter can or will take any further action.

The game designers thank all the "contributors" that paid for their FREE vacation on a Hawaiian beach.

Absolutely not. I'll take a few bad apples. Lately Kickstarter has been churning out some awesome games.

<< LINK REMOVED >> People should just research what and who they're donating to. Some people are certainly taking advantage of it though, such as Star Citizen which is building a ship market for people parting ways with their money easily.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> SC is getting absolutely RIDICULOUS with their in game ship buying system. Ridiculous. Why the F should we pay upwards of over $100 for an in-game ship when SC is well over the 70 million dollar mark? People are idiots for buying anything in-game. It's NOT real. You'll never have it in your hands. Such dolts.

well, if people will not get their money back it is a scam, and false advertisement has been used on a private website that does not support such a thing (which would be illegal). This means that the people that put money into the game will have to seek a lawyer and do a big time law suit against the dev.

Whether at the end it is worth it or not, I don't know... A lawyer will not become rich of this law suit, so people end up having to get together to pay for the lawyer out of their own pockets until he wins in court, which he will. The money will then have to be paid back, but the big question again is, will it be worth it for investments made that are worth less than 100 usd...

I think, this is the devs joker card... the amount is too low for people to get organized and seek legal council, meaning, the dev walks off with the cash.

The guy might not be a scammer, he may have been a genuinely passionate guy with an idea he believed in who ended up biting off more than he could chew.

Game development can be a really tedious slog through bugs and back end stuff, and the pressure to deliver can be huge. He may have just found that his dream project turned into a nightmare of long, frustrating nights at the computer and just bailed when he couldn't hack it anymore. Even if that's true, he should at least have the guts to admit it rather than just running for the hills.

Sadly, there's not much backers on kickstarter can do to verify if a dev team has the willpower, skill and dedication to see a project through, regardless of their initial enthusiasm.

This is still a thing? I remember hearing like a year ago that it got dropped by Steam because the devs were nowhere to be found.

I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm one of the backers of a project on Kickstarter. However, it's Star Trek Continues, and they've already done four episodes with more on the way with regular updates, videos, and everything else on top of the fact that the people working on it are already established in Hollywood to some degree or other. That is the only reason I backed that project, because it has already delivered. I would never back anything like this that just seemed shady from the get go.

<< LINK REMOVED >> You can back risky projects as long as you're okay with losing the money. I have no problem risking small sums of money on the chance of a game ending up well, and I'm pretty patient. I did have games die on me (mostly, they're still allegedly on a back burner), and I certainly had to wait for others (Broken Age still isn't finished), but as long as you go into Kickstarter with the intent of helping make something a reality and you're aware that it might not happen or not end up exactly how you wanted it, you'll be fine.

And this is exactly why I don't participate in Kickstarters for video games. I am just not one of those people that would be happy if a project was suddenly abandoned halfway. That's why Peter Molyneux never got my money and its why other games won't get my money. Even if it's a well established company, I just don't want to be one of those risk takers.

Star Citizen looks like it could be amazing but until its playable. I'll wait for release before actually purchasing it.

The game seems interesting, and last I heard was that they were switching from Unity to UE4, which now they can't prove, they have taken over $100,000 and haven't even payed the artist, what utter bullshit, if they ever try to release a game again the community will remember that the developer did this to us, and then they wont see a dime.

I can just picture him at home.. sitting in the dark with his phone and internet off, smoking some crack and watching daytime TV.. You know you're not loved when nobody can get ahold of you yet nobody informs the police incase you are dead on your living room floor.

<< LINK REMOVED >> You got it backwards sadly since a donation is without receiving anything back where as an investment is with the intent of receiving something in the end. There's plenty of investors outside kickstarters scamming people. Anyone can scam you regardless of platform, but still doesn't change the fact that the scammers are the minority of people involved in any form of donation or investment anywhere.

This is really starting to piss me off. Every time I turn around I hear about how some Kickstarter project has gone quiet or some Early Access game has stopped making updates. These are both excellent sources of income for people that are genuinely setting out to do what they promise, but as with everything good in the world, there are people out there fucking it up for the rest of us. They see how easy it is to do a little work and get the money without having to finish anything. Now people like myself come in and are genuinely trying to create a fun and creative game for the community and nobody is going to trust us enough to fund us.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Not at all. In South Park they ran a kickstarter promising that they weren't going to do shit and people paid them for it. They got what they paid for. Here is another example of a quick cash scam where he's promised a product, received the money, and hasn't done shit to show for it. This is theft.

The game demo looked really interesting. I just couldn't trust something with that low of a funding goal though. Originally $20,000 - that would last about one month with a small U.S. team; mileage may vary with outsourcing.
