"All-Digital" Xbox One With No Disc Drive Leaked

Would you be interested in an Xbox One with no disc drive?

Seemingly confirming the long-running rumours and reports, images of the supposed "All-Digital" Xbox One that has no disc drive have emerged online. The German website WinFuture.de obtained the images, which appear to be from a European retailer.

Based on the sales art, it appears Minecraft, Sea of Thieves, and Forza Horizon 3 might come pre-installed on this console, with a 1 TB hard drive. Bear in mind that this may only be one version of an all-digital Xbox One SKU that Microsoft is planning. Pricing hasn't been announced, and bundles tend to vary greatly by region.

Now Playing: "All Digital" Xbox One Leaks - GS News Update

Whatever the case, given that what appear to be official images for the console are showing up online, it might not be long until Microsoft officially announces it. As it happens, Microsoft's next Inside Xbox event is coming up on April 16. In addition to news about Microsoft's plans for E3, the company might announce this console during the show.

Microsoft is also reportedly planning a "disc-to-digital" campaign where you can bring a disc game to a retailer and get a download code. Additionally, there are rumours of a new Xbox Live + Xbox Game Pass bundle offering for $15 USD/month, so that could be another one of the announcements coming for the Inside Xbox stream this week.

Pre-orders for the All-Digital Xbox One console are said to open in April, with the system then scheduled to go on sale in May around the world.

The disc-free Xbox One might not be the last console Microsoft announces in the coming months. Microsoft is rumoured to reveal at least one next-gen console at E3 in June. And importantly, if Microsoft does make a disc-free Xbox One, it doesn't necessarily mean the company will stop making Xbox One consoles with disc drives. Internet availability and speed vary by region, and all-digital consoles won't work everywhere at this stage. It appears Microsoft will be providing the option to go all-digital for those who want to.

Would you be interested in a disc-free Xbox One? Let us know in the comments below!

Why would I buy this, when I can get a cheaper used XB1S with a drive and play all my old disc-based games. For anyone new to the ecosystem, why would they do that too & miss all the great used discounted disc games available out there? Price should have been $150-200 at most, save your money & just buy a Switch then. Ridiculous thinking at MS, they should have just asked me! These people working at MS are so disconnected from reality, they are well paid & have no concept of who buys their games. If I was rich, then I would be traveling the world and living it up, but my funds are limited & I choose to spend my money wisely. The XB1 SAD is not a wise choice, and this despite loving my XB1X. Had it been a XB1X SAD, then maybe worth it, but not a "S." Man are the reporters & media going to have a blast with the "SAD" acronym when this box fails. FYI, I have both PS4 & XB1X, but man I truly do love my XB1X with all the backwards compat. games I have & the power.

Wait...would I not only be willing to go digital for all future games, but would I also be willing to give up ownership of actual discs just to get digital copies where ownership is so nebulous MS can wipe any game out at any time for any reason?

oh, sure...let me sign right up.

I’ll go digital once they make a subscription model that’s reasonable enough that has all the games in it. If the subscription has an upgrade to play a game a few weeks earlier, then I’ll pay for that too. Otherwise, I’ll be sitting out of the next gen if they go the all digital route and the pricing model stays like it is currently.

@swantn5: Agreed. I was thinking more about the subscription model. I’m thinking maybe a bronze package with all first party games. A silver package with all first party games and 1 third party of your choosing, a gold one with all of the bronze and silver packages with 2 third parties of your choosing, etc. It gotta be reasonable price wise, but I think that will work out for most of us.

The way i see it, you are paying the same price of the standard xbox one and you are getting less, also releasing this late in the generation it doesn't even make sense, a new xbox will come in 2020.... I would never buy a console without a disc drive, i use discs all the time!

@forzaroma13: It exchanges the disc drive for a 1TB HDD.

Though you are right, the disc drive is more useful.

LOL 229 Euros?

Isn't that the price of a new XB1 with a disc drive?

Amazon Warehouse even has ''like new'' ones listed for as low as $140.

@streamline: They will wait and see what Sony does. They will let Sony go first. If Sony does always-online, MS will gauge the reaction and if there's no backlash, they will follow suit. If Sony doesn't do it, they won't. If Sony does it and people are pissed, MS won't do it.

They've learned their lesson this time.

@lostn: The lesson learned was too costly. To this day I still cringe at that time and I own an XB1X and love it now. I think they will eternally trying to play catch up from now on. Not many are willing to leave their library of games to switch over from one sys to another.

Even though most of my X1 games are digital (thanks Gold) I'm not interested at all. Especially as I have two discs. And no, i don't care to trade them in for download codes.

People buy games on PC digitally because they are exponentially cheaper than their physical counterparts but this is not the case on consoles. Why would anyone pay 60 quid for some downloaded bits and bytes when you can buy the game physically for the same ammount of money? Also, digital games are linked to your accounts so no more trading with friends. People in this topic actually supporting this retarded practice should grow some brains.

@Bexorcist:

"Why would anyone pay 60 quid for some downloaded bits and bytes when you can buy the game physically for the same amount of money?"

Because you can access the game on multiple Xboxs and PCs without worrying about having the disc with you. Numerous times I've been at a friends house and wanted to play a game so I simply downloaded it.

"Also, digital games are linked to your accounts so no more trading with friends."

Signing into your account on a second Xbox gives that console's owner access to your entire digital library. One purchase, two people game. You can even play together. I know many people that go half-and-half on brand new games and do this.

"People in this topic actually supporting this retarded practice should grow some brains."

Okay, now your comment makes sense - you just have no friends.

So you like to be dependent off an active internet connection? What if they decide to shut down the servers several years from now? "Simply download it"? Average games nowadays are well around 60 gigs. Resale value? Ever heard of that? Digital versions have every reason to be much cheaper than their physical counterparts (no boxing, no shipping, etc.) yet they never are.

I'm not very fond of sharing my account credentials with incorporated VISA-credentials to anyone, thank you. It's much easier to just borrow a disc from a friend an return it afterwards. I also like to have my own achievements linked to my personal account instead of those that someone else accomplished.

Okay, now your comment makes sense - you just have no friends.

Not sure why you become an ass after a sincere argument but OK, proper analysis of my life due to a few random internet comments! Kudos to you, you psychoanalytic mastermind!

I get it, man. You gotta cling to your argument, but have some consistency. "What if they decide to shut down the servers several years from now? Resale value? Ever heard of that?"

I'm confused, are you worried about retaining access to the game years from now or do you want to sell it when you're done? Either is fair. As for game sharing, your achievements are not shared and a passcode is applied to your purchasing privileges, so your point is moot.

"Not sure why you become an ass after a sincere argument but OK"

Oh, just reference you own quote you included just before. Seeing as how I'm automatically deemed brainless for "supporting this retarded practice", you're a fool if you expect civility in the responses to your comments. :)

@Bexorcist:

I think you’re the one that needs to grow some brains buddy! I understand that for some people all digital won’t suit but for others it most certainly does! I have two X1’s so every time I buy a game digitally I get it on both consoles so I basically get two copies for the price of one, I’m also signed up to games pass and gold and honestly between them I rarely feel the need to buy any more games, there’s also the fact that digital sales are MUCH better than they used to be, you’re still living in 2014 in regards to that. They never said they weren’t going to have any disc consoles at all so why you have such a beef with the all digital one I’ll never understand. As for the trading with friends, who honestly does that anymore?? All that said, it would want to be a fair bit cheaper than a console with a disc drive otherwise I’d just go with that, because options are always good.

@shuttle_cock: That is some seriously flawed logic. Two copies for the price of one?
Also, most of new releases costs the same ammount of money for either the physical or the digital version. No sane person would ever prefer the digital counterpart. Digital "sales" on consoles are a joke compared to those on PC.

You say you like to have options yet you claim borrowing games from a friend instead of buying them (especially single player games which I never buy) is a thing of the past?

Obvious case of Stockholm syndrome.

It’s not flawed logic at all, I buy the game once and I get to play it on two consoles. At the same time if someone else wants to play it with me. You can’t do that with a physical disk now can you tard? Stockholm syndrome? Haha clutching at straws there pal. Oh and by the way PS4 actually has far better deals than Steam. I know this because I have a gaming PC and all the consoles. I bet that gets your little head steaming from the ears doesn’t it?! Hahah. It’s true though. Look at steam and PSN right now

90% of my purchases are physical but the MS game pass service is actually quite good. I don't have an xbox yet so I could actually buy this... but only if it is significantly cheaper than the standard model (let's say $150 max)

Reminds me of the Xbox 360 Arcade when people thought a proprietary 256MB memory stick was all that was needed to play games because that's what came in the box. Sold a lot of hard drives for them. A lot of hard drives. There are more people with lousy internet speeds and caps than there are those with good speeds and no caps. I hear all the time how someone on my friends list has to wait to download a massive patch for a game because they've reached their cap for the month. 30GB patches are now the norm. Game downloads plus the patch can be upwards of 80GB or more. That's twice many people's monthly cap. Until almost all ISP's get on board with fast speeds and no caps, digital only is a fantasy for the gaming industry. Same for streaming only. It'll be years before the majority of people have reliable, fast speeds to stream 1080p/60fps or higher reliably. This is basically what Microsoft wanted when they first launched the Xbox One and people lost their minds. Now we are getting closer to that original plan and people are all, yeah that's cool with me. They've just decided to go with the original plan in little increments, hoping we won't notice or care. Soon it will be 1 copy for 1 person and no resale value. Great for single guys living alone. Not so great for couples or families.

@bdrtfm: My hope is that it will be the norm for 5G service not to have any data caps, and that this will push other networks and providers to offer the same thing. But yeah, caps are a problem, and companies like MS and Netflix and Google, whose content uses up large amounts of data, should be pushing the ISPs to get rid of them
