"All-Digital" Xbox One With No Disc Drive Leaked

Would you be interested in an Xbox One with no disc drive?

Seemingly confirming the long-running rumours and reports, images of the supposed "All-Digital" Xbox One that has no disc drive have emerged online. The German website WinFuture.de obtained the images, which appear to be from a European retailer.

Based on the sales art, it appears Minecraft, Sea of Thieves, and Forza Horizon 3 might come pre-installed on this console, with a 1 TB hard drive. Bear in mind that this may only be one version of an all-digital Xbox One SKU that Microsoft is planning. Pricing hasn't been announced, and bundles tend to vary greatly by region.

Now Playing: "All Digital" Xbox One Leaks - GS News Update

Whatever the case, given that what appear to be official images for the console are showing up online, it might not be long until Microsoft officially announces it. As it happens, Microsoft's next Inside Xbox event is coming up on April 16. In addition to news about Microsoft's plans for E3, the company might announce this console during the show.

Microsoft is also reportedly planning a "disc-to-digital" campaign where you can bring a disc game to a retailer and get a download code. Additionally, there are rumours of a new Xbox Live + Xbox Game Pass bundle offering for $15 USD/month, so that could be another one of the announcements coming for the Inside Xbox stream this week.

Pre-orders for the All-Digital Xbox One console are said to open in April, with the system then scheduled to go on sale in May around the world.

The disc-free Xbox One might not be the last console Microsoft announces in the coming months. Microsoft is rumoured to reveal at least one next-gen console at E3 in June. And importantly, if Microsoft does make a disc-free Xbox One, it doesn't necessarily mean the company will stop making Xbox One consoles with disc drives. Internet availability and speed vary by region, and all-digital consoles won't work everywhere at this stage. It appears Microsoft will be providing the option to go all-digital for those who want to.

What would be truly great is if we got an Xbox One (and X) with an HDMI port that didn't die and take $250 to fix.

they could also do what i suggested years ago...

use a usb flash drive to download the game at the store or from a kiosk like redbox.. go home and install it off the flash drive.

no need for discs and people with limited or slow internet connection can still get their games.

with the cheap cost of usb drives they could even sell a usb drive with games already on it... tho that wouldn't be the normal way to do it.. digital download works fine.

@wanderz: dunno man. It’s smart, I’d do it, but the pubs are way too scared of piracy to let it happen.

it's inevitable.. PC games very very rarely even have a disc release or if they do it's very limited and not like you just go to any store and get them.. yet pc gaming is doing fine. there are plenty of computers with no disc drive.. mine does have one, but i don't even remember when i last used it, or even IF i ever used it actually.

but again as it says this would not replace all the other consoles.. so if you want a disc drive you can still use it.

digital movies and online video services are way more popular then disc based movies and shows.

to all the people saying you will need a bigger hard drive... even if you use a disc the game is still installed!!

the only big difference is instead of inserting a disc and waiting for it to install, you click download and wait for it to install. very minor difference (unless you have a data limit) heck the last game i installed from a disc took just as long to install as downloaded games, and my internet connection isn't really that good..

@wanderz: I agree. After upgrading my PC this year, I didn't add a disc drive at all in my new case. Every PC game I buy digitally as my net connection is good :)

For consoles though, it will be fine for renting films that way, but if you have a large BR collection like me, I will have to rely on my dedicated UHD drive. But that's fine :)

@Jrxbarrett: What is accommodating and flexible about removing a major feature? That is literally the exact opposite. Who are they accommodating, people who can't use disc drives due to religious beliefs? Here you go, this consoles does less than the others. Oh thank you. I've been holding off on buying an Xbox until they removed the evil disc drive....

@bdrtfm: Disc drive is not a major feature. They're accommodating the people who don't care about a disc drive and are offering flexibility within the Xbox console line up. There will be a disc drive in one of the new consoles for next gen so idk why so many are so pissy about this when I know for sure the ones complaining already have an Xbox/PS for this gen or both. What do you mean does less? If it does HDR and streams in 4k then idk what it does less since it's not the One X.

@onehitta323: How exactly is this a fail? Do PC gamers and many console users still use physical copies of games? I don't. If this can be done at an attractive price point in a compact case... I might pull the trigger.

@stickybun: You are mentioning the exact flaw in this system. There isn't an "attractive price point" when it comes to consoles. A digital download costs the same ammount of money as a physical copy.

@stickybun: Huge fail because gamers with a good head on their shoulders are smart enough to understand that digital is not a viable solution. Do you really like the idea of having no control over what content you choose to consume?

And most importantly, we are not switching to digital.

I see a few problems with this "leak"

1: 1TB is nowhere near enough space for digital only. Microsoft should know that.

2: Xbox boxes don't typically feature everything that's on this box art. Google "Xbox one console box" and you'll see this one in the leak is much busier.

3: Forza Horizon 3 came out in 2016. Forza games are one of Microsoft's biggest game franchises. When they release the newest console they typically release the newest Forza game along with it. Very unlike them to release an older one.

4: This one expands on my last point. When Microsoft releases a new console they put new (or at least newer) games on it. This one features nothing that's come out in the last year. Here's a list of games that were released with the Xbox one when it came out for reference: https://www.ign.com/wikis/xbox-one/Xbox_One_Launch_Titles#Confirmed_Day_One_Xbox_One_Games

5: Why would Xbox put this feature on a One S when they've already confirmed they're releasing a next gen console this year? Even if this is the next gen console they would've at least changed the name to something other than Xbox one.

All in all this sounds cool, but I have serious doubts

@clarkiplier: There is a bit wrong or uninformed regarding several of your points. To begin with, 1TB is what is to be expected for a size if they want to keep the price down. 2TB would have been nice and the sheer cost of larger ones effectively rules them out (since the machine uses 2.5" drives and not the less expensive, larger capacity 3.5" ones). I think you are all wet concerning the bundled games, they are offering these popular games as enticement and offering the older Horizon game makes sense to keep the cost down.

Finally, the new Xboxes are NOT releasing this year and I don't know how you came to that conclusion - much less think Microsoft confirmed it (they haven't). They will be likely be announced this year at E3, but won't release until next year at the earliest. This is not a new gen console but an additional SKU added at the near end of the life cycle as the E model of the 360 was (except this isn't replacing anything, just supplementing the lineup like the X does).

That's funny. I got my X1S with Gears 4 for $200.

With a disc drive.

This thing, after nearly 7 years on the market, should be $159.

Can you still play offline games if servers go down? As a hardcore gamer, I prefer traditional consoles because I usually buy big games/games I love on disks ie God of War, Gears and only buy indie games digitally. The plus side is I don't have to keep deleting games to get new ones.

@letsgame82: Also as was pointed out by someone else, these current gen consoles have everything installed on the hard drive (disc or digital), so you are not saving any hard drive space by going physical. You may save some bandwidth in the installation (unless the patches are bigger or replace the disc install which is common on some games) but do not save any drive space. You lose a bit of convenience as you are required to have the disc in the drive in order to play, even though wht is installed on the hard drive is exactly the same as the digital (minus the digital license).

@masterfrankgrimes: And how many times has something like that happened now Chicken Little? Practically non existent FYI (that is if it has ever happened, which I doubt, but am hedging my bets here). They cannot revoke what you've bought unless you've done something wrong with your account or a server was shut down....which would affect your precious disc as much as a digital copy, making it a worthless platter.

@dlCHIEF58: They absolutely can render any digital game they choose unplayable. They can also censor them later should some liberal moron decide it offends too many people. With digital, you're completely at the mercy of whoever is running the place. What you're claiming would affect my disc would only affect it should anyone be stupid enough to connect their console online. You people claim you're "woke af" but have no idea what freedoms you've given up slowly year by year. Can't wait for it to happen and watch you all cry about not having your precious digital games anymore because you were dumb enough to buy vapor.

@masterfrankgrimes: The digital copy of a game that I install onto a hdd will last as long as a physical copy that you install onto an hdd, as long as you dont scratch, lose or break your disc.

I just played a 17 year old game digitally....good luck getting a 17 year old physical game to work on consoles....ps4 doesnt support CDs.

@letsgame82: doesn't matter if you are online or not.. once it's installed it's installed..

even if you use a disc the games are still installed on the hard drive.. the disc is basically just to install it and then verify that you have the disc once it is installed. so you would still need to delete games to install new ones if the drive is full. (or just add an additional usb hard drive)

@masterfrankgrimes: yea, I had a hard time with PC games going digital. But then that became digital or nothing.

I've learned to appreciate having all my games on a whim, but I've always missed the physical library.

Consoles going all digital just seems redundant. Like why even bother with a console.

@jagdedge124: And you have the option to buy an external one if you need it, just like the previous models. Adding such would add significant cost to the console as 4TB 2.5" hard drives are fairly expensive.

For someone new to Xbox who wants to get into GamePass this system probably makes sense. The only thing I don't agree with is building a new system based on the inferior specs of the One S. At this point they should only be manufacturing hardware based on the One X specs. The CPU and memory are nearly six years old after all, and many people probably won't realize that when buying a "new" system.
