In an effort to make it up to fans affected by Assassin's Creed Unity's troubled launch, Ubisoft will give away the game's Dead Kings expansion to all players, the publisher announced today. This content was previously going to be included with the game's DLC pass. For people who already bought the pass (or the Gold Edition, which includes the pass), Ubisoft will give you one free game from the list below.

The publisher is currently in the process of setting up a system to process this free game offer. Full details on how you can claim your free game will be published soon. The game's DLC pass has been removed from sale, though its other scheduled content--including the standalone game Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China--has not been scuttled, and will be delivered later.

As for the Dead Kings expansion, which is a story campaign set after the events of the main game, it is "coming soon," Ubisoft said.

"I want to sincerely apologize on behalf of Ubisoft and the entire Assassin's Creed team" -- Yannis Mallat

Ubisoft Montreal and Toronto CEO Yannis Mallat also apologized for Unity's rocky launch, saying he understands how disappointing and frustrating the matter is for those affected.

"Unfortunately, at launch, the overall quality of the game was diminished by bugs and unexpected technical issues," he said. "I want to sincerely apologize on behalf of Ubisoft and the entire Assassin's Creed team. These problems took away from your enjoyment of the game, and kept many of you from experiencing the game at its fullest potential."

Mallat stressed that Ubisoft has been working diligently to fix the game's issues by releasing a steady flow of patches. The game's third major patch is rolling out now, and it's a big one, featuring more than 300 fixes that aim to improve performance, matchmaking, connectivity, and more.

"In addition to the latest patch and this offer, we are committed to delivering further fixes for other issues you've raised," Mallat added. "In the meantime, please keep your feedback coming--it has been both humbling and incredibly helpful as we continue working hard to improve the overall quality of the game. We are hopeful that with these forthcoming updates, everyone will be able to truly enjoy their Assassin’s Creed Unity experience."

I think this would be great if they actually give us the physical game and not a digital download....at least it will show that although ubisoft made a horrible business decision which impacted us as gamers...but changed certain outlooks people have on the quality they expect from an Assassin's Creed game.

I want to sincerely apologize, but I won't because we'll be making the same mistakes again. We at Ubisoft are battle hardened and stubborn enough to not learn from the mistakes that we made with WatchDogs earlier this year. It is our motto to dupe gamers and cheat them out of their money while we rake in big profits through broken promises.

Well I got it a week late because I ordered direcly by Ubi, but when I got it I did buy the season pass (mainly for the platformer). Getting a free game after no really getting the hugest problems is actually pretty nice for me, probably going with the Crew

Destiny v ACUnity

D: “So how are you trying to win back the fans after all these unity bugs?"
U: “We are giving away our first DLC to all owners, and a free game if owners already paid for the season pass. How about you?”
D: “We just gave them a free speeder <shrugs>”
U: “WTF!”
D: “I know right, but it does have a cool blue glowing trail on it, and you can do stunts”
U: “Why do they need to do that?”
D: “Because theres nothing else to do in the game other than grind the same levels over and over again while listening to Peter Dinklage”
U: “At least we tried to put unique content into our game, and a story”
D: “Look where that got you”

Almost wish I had bought it for the free Far Cry 4, but then again, they could've given nothing free, and I would've been having more regrets.

This game was a serious slap in the face and kick in the balls for long-time AC fans. Bugs, glitches, broken promises none withstanding, UbiSoft's decision to turn the latest AC game into a microtransaction fest was the first of their greater sins. The second was in actually releasing an unfinished game: I played it for a week after launch and you still couldn't link ACU to AC Initiates; and Club Competitions still weren't active, so no kitting out in a full set of Legendary gear.

Is their apology be enough? For me, no; but it's a step in the right direction. I'm so glad I rented the game instead of buying it as I had originally planned.

<< LINK REMOVED >> "Bugs, glitches, broken promises", that's the Assassin's Creed experience. AC is not AC without them, hence why AC 4: Black Flag is not considered a true AC as it didn't have as many bugs as we expected.

Now that's ridiculous. There was enough times in gaming history that a game arrived full of bugs, most of the time we don't even get an apology. Now you get free dlc or a complete full-priced game as an apology, and everyone is, "yeah it was planned beforehand, what an assholes". I don't understand you. I for one, find it pretty generous, even if they fucked the launch up.

Bought Unity Gold through Steam. Will Ubisoft provide me a Steam key for a game or will it only be through Uplay. Preordered The Crew on Steam so would like to know ASAP so I can click the refund button. I only play through Steam since all my friends are on that. I like to chat with them when playing so Uplay only is not an option.

Huh, I had my issues with Unity (mostly crashing during and before Co-OP) but I've had a fun time with it. Free game for all that? I'll take it and use caution when pre ordering games in the future. Dragon Age is pretty buggy too but no one is talking about that.

i heard this game sucks. no hidden blades or anything and you are an amateur assassin throughout the game rather than a pro like in the other games....

can someone confirm this?

after playing black flag which was an incredible game, this is very disappointing. this had flop written all over it anyway, i knew paris would make for a boring game coz paris is the most boring place iv ever been. think ill steer clear from ass creed from now on.

arkham knight will smoke this game.

I have not finished playing AC: Unity yet but these are my thoughts so far. It is a Genuine Stellar Effort with Shallow Interests & Missed Opportunities

Good

  • An absolute breathtaking recreation of game's physical and living environment and is taken advantage of via Nostradamus missions, however the reward is too small.
  • A genuine effort of breathing fresh air into the franchise with new elements yet keeping the roots (Assassin HQ, older economy system, Social Clubs, Rooftops navigation, classic and more realistic environmental blending). New elements such as, Character customization,Stealth mechanics, Co-op missions add greatly to the overall experience.
  • Ambitious but broken/non-optimized AI engineering
  • Improved parkour mechanics however, the auto-correct feature could be optimized
  • Better combat system
  • Better User Interface mechanics

Opportunities

  • Performance Issues: Frame rate and rendering, lag in music and action output, AI glitches such as floating NPC's (greatly improved since Patch 3)
  • Gameplay - Vague, unimaginative and dull missions which is partly due to dull script. Although approach to missions are more open ended than traditional AC games.
  • Partial character development and weak script/screenplay
  • Too early introduction of microtransactions interrupts the immersive aspect of the game and indicates shallow intentions of UbiSoft.
  • Unlike previous AC installments, dull music that does not complement or/and increase immersive aspect of the game. The bloody revolution, the chaos and the hidden beauty of Paris cannot be felt via the music.
  • RPG elements not fully realized. Examples -
    • Side missions such as Renovations, murder mysteries, paris stories could have played a role in the overall impact to the French revolution and the outcome of the story.
    • Random side activities (such as tackle thieves, kill criminals etc.) are there but do not play a role in overall impact to the revolution and the outcome of the story.
    • Chests are there and merely for money, they should have played a role in bomb crafting, weapon and armor upgrades via introduction of crafting materials as it was partly in AC Revelations.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Hey Aaron, you actually do have hidden blade in it, you just get it a bit later in the game not from the very beginning. In addition, you actually get a long range hidden blade called the phantom blade which basically combines the idea of throwing knives with the hidden blade tool, and more accurate than throwing knives.

Also, I have never been to Paris so I wouldn't know, but if you liked the settings in AC, AC2, AC: Brotherhood, AC: Revelations, then I believe you will love how they have re-created Paris, the architectural details is mind blowing and the a photo realistic environment. And blending mechanics actually feel realistic in this game as it did back in first AC where Altair's uniform was similar to the scholars. I think it is some of the few strengths of the game.

And I am super excited for Arkham Knight, it looks amazing getting in and out of Batmobile.

Hope that helps.

And there's a big difference between going to France on vacation and playing a videogame where the location is really secondary to gameplay.

I'll bet companies figure "free DLC apology" into their budgets now.

They can release shoddy games quickly, apologize with a "free DLC" that should have been content on the disk anyway, and sheep will eat it up as sincere.
