Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood ships 7.2 million, Ubisoft teases 'ambitious' PC announcement

French publisher posts 19% revenue growth during fiscal 2011 to $1.87 billion; reveal of online title in "top gamer franchise" coming in days.

The Assassin's Creed franchise continues to make a killing for Ubisoft. As part of the French publisher's 2011 fiscal year earnings report today, Ubisoft announced that Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood has shipped 7.2 million units through March 31. That figure comes in at 1.8 million units fewer than Assassin's Creed II during the same period of time, and franchise shipments now stand at 29 million units.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood has found an army of followers.
Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood has found an army of followers.

As for the rest of Ubisoft's 2011 fiscal year earnings report, the publisher said revenues came in at €1.31 billion ($1.87 billion), up 19 percent year-over-year. Despite the revenue spike, Ubisoft posted a net loss of €52.1 million ($74.36 million) for the 12-month period, falling 5 percent from the year prior.

Ubisoft attributed this loss to a number of non-recurring charges. The bulk of these charges dealt with a reorganization across its stable of internal studios, which resulted in the elimination of 30 to 40 jobs and terminated a number of unspecified projects. Ubisoft said that the goal of this reorganization was to "adapt its structure to major changes in the industry." Big-budget, non-Assassin's Creed games also negatively impacted profitability.

The publisher went on to note that stronger sell-through at retail during the holiday quarter helped ameliorate those losses, as it was able to keep prices at a higher-than-expected level. Ubisoft also said that it saw a rebound in the casual gaming segment during the year, aided primarily by the booming dance market. Specifically, the Just Dance franchise has now shipped 14 million units, while its Michael Jackson The Experience game has sold-in 3 million units.

In fact, Ubisoft provided shipment updates for all of its key franchises. The Rayman/Raving Rabbids line remains Ubisoft's best-selling franchise with 31 million units shipped, followed by Assassin's Creed (29 million units), Petz (23 million units), and Rainbox Six (23 million units). Splinter Cell closely follows its Tom Clancy cousin with 22 million units, while Ghost Recon has shipped 18 million units.

From there, Prince of Persia has shipped 17 million units, followed closely by Driver's 15 million units and the aforementioned Just Dance. The Settlers franchise has shipped 8 million units, while Brothers in Arms and Far Cry have both sold-in 7 million units. Rounding out the list were the Anno and Your Shape franchises, at 5 million units and 2 million units, respectively.

Looking ahead, Ubisoft expects to post similar revenue during its 2012 fiscal year, with sales expected to stand at €1.04 billion ($1.48 billion) and €1.08 billion ($1.54 billion). Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot also offered a tantalizing look at the days ahead, saying that the publisher's online segment will announce "an ambitious project on PC based on one of our top gamer franchises that will illustrate our capacity to take advantage of new business models."

Guillemot also noted that Trackmania 2 Canyon will enter a closed beta test in the coming months.

In a post-earnings conference call, Ubisoft also addressed the ongoing PlayStation Network outage, saying that while the impact on its business has been minimal, it is still significant.

"It is affecting the games that we launched, and it's affecting some games that we wanted to launch," Guillemot said. "We have a game that's been launched on XBLA, but has been delayed on PSN. The impact is still small because our revenue on this platform is not huge. Altogether, the cost will be minimal. It's important that they restore the system quickly because lots of our products are multiplayer games."

How come I've never met someone who plays games on their computer? I know they must exist, but seriously, as much as you people talk it up, there sure seems to be a lack of support for it

@Jane_22 Insulting people is a poor way to support your stance. PC is a great system and so are consoles. PC is only better if you like higher graphics, modding, and full game digital download otherwise eh.

@gamerxxx89 "confusing controls + late pc release = i dnt like assn crd" ============================================== I felt exactly like that though now I am just about a quarter done with Brotherhood, and honestly, I love the series now! The controls are not typical, but they are only hard at first. As for the late PC relase, don't let that put you off - it's better late than never, afterall, so just enjoy it. Give it a try again and just play for a little longer. By the way, AC2 is good to start with, I found 1 to be so so so repetitious (though it was fun).

Heh, he's probably suggesting an MMO - likely a worldwide Assassin's Creed game that have cells of Assassins squaring off against Templar agents. I wouldn't be surprised if it's exactly this.

@XboxGuy1537 -- Too late. But Ubisoft has done a good job of keeping up the quality of AC, just like Activision has done a good job keeping up the quality of CoD. However, lets hope these annual AC releases also carry some originality, something CoD is sorely lacking.

@Ronnie_Rim I'll break it down for you, since you failed to understand my point: -First of all, when I said that I did not mention consoles, I was referring to the fact that you (yes, you!) compared both of them in capability, something totally out of context. -Secondly, if you are a PC gamer and purchased RS Vegas, Splinter Cell Conviction or Assassin's Creed,(all three of them running nearly flawlessly on their console counterparts) you'd know that they suffered from severe issues regarding controller support and performance, something that me, you, and every other consumer shouldn't be exposed to since games like DMC 4 and Resident Evil 5 and others proved that console-to-pc "translations" can work very well. -Again, nobody but fanboys care about the PC vs Consoles bollocks that you've tried to throw here, as long as all versions play well, regardless of platform, something that Ubi's recent titles failed to accomplish on the PC. Have a good day, sir.

@vader501st Okay, so I'M the flamer? Oh, I read your post. What seems to jump out at me is the "stick with the consoles" part. First of all, how did you NOT mention consoles? This last line says "console" right in it. Second of all, you are flaming much more than I am. In fact, your flaming was the reason I replied to your comment in the fashion that I did. So please, stop falsely accusing me of flaming and get out.

@Ronnie_Rim Read my comment once more. If a game is poorly coded, it won't make a difference if the game is running on a 3 year old or top of the line PC. Sadly, many Ubisoft titles suffer from that. Also, I didn't even mention consoles, go flame somewhere else. "Optimiztion" - Google it.

Ubisoft should stay away from the PC. Most of their ports run like crap on good rigs, let alone the DRM. Stick with the consoles.

Wow! I was Happy to Hear Driver SF finally gonna hit(Aug30), was expecting the same for Ghost Recon Future Solider, Then Ubisoft Goes and Screws the pouch there is never gonna be a best time to release the game this Gen. Obliviously, COD, Halo, and Gears Fanatics are to blame but these ppl can still make a decision to buy your game when they get fed up with the drivel that Activision Keeps spewing from there bowels..... I guess you can't bank your sales on odd chance this may happen so they run like cowards from any competition much like EA did with Football.

I think Ubisoft bets too much on their casual games, almost all of them are bad. Do Raving Rabbids and Petz sell at all? Michael Jackson The Experience was a failure, Rayman lost it's charm and nobody cares about WW2 games (Brothers in Arms). They may ship but that isn't sure profit cause retailers can return the remaining stock to the publisher. With that said they rely too much on AC and Tom Clancy's games for revenue. That ain't good.

AC has been one of the best franchises of last 5 years. All 3 games blew me away and each game built on the already successful model and added something new and different and Brotherhood has some of the most unique MP games around. I'll be getting Revelations no doubt.

The AC games already play like MMOs in terms of gameplay though. You get quests, explore, level up, get gold, buy crap. There's no story. You just kill.. kill.. and kill some more.

I hope they don't do an MMO, I love AC games but I hate MMO's, I just don't have enough time to dedicate to an MMO and so I fall way behind any friends that I make in them. I tried to play WoW and it took me 6 months to get to lvl 20, the guild I joined kicked me out for not being online enough. It took me about a month and a half to beat AC Brotherhood between work and family I just can't do a MMO.
