Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood ships 7.2 million, Ubisoft teases 'ambitious' PC announcement

French publisher posts 19% revenue growth during fiscal 2011 to $1.87 billion; reveal of online title in "top gamer franchise" coming in days.

The Assassin's Creed franchise continues to make a killing for Ubisoft. As part of the French publisher's 2011 fiscal year earnings report today, Ubisoft announced that Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood has shipped 7.2 million units through March 31. That figure comes in at 1.8 million units fewer than Assassin's Creed II during the same period of time, and franchise shipments now stand at 29 million units.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood has found an army of followers.

As for the rest of Ubisoft's 2011 fiscal year earnings report, the publisher said revenues came in at €1.31 billion ($1.87 billion), up 19 percent year-over-year. Despite the revenue spike, Ubisoft posted a net loss of €52.1 million ($74.36 million) for the 12-month period, falling 5 percent from the year prior.

Ubisoft attributed this loss to a number of non-recurring charges. The bulk of these charges dealt with a reorganization across its stable of internal studios, which resulted in the elimination of 30 to 40 jobs and terminated a number of unspecified projects. Ubisoft said that the goal of this reorganization was to "adapt its structure to major changes in the industry." Big-budget, non-Assassin's Creed games also negatively impacted profitability.

The publisher went on to note that stronger sell-through at retail during the holiday quarter helped ameliorate those losses, as it was able to keep prices at a higher-than-expected level. Ubisoft also said that it saw a rebound in the casual gaming segment during the year, aided primarily by the booming dance market. Specifically, the Just Dance franchise has now shipped 14 million units, while its Michael Jackson The Experience game has sold-in 3 million units.

In fact, Ubisoft provided shipment updates for all of its key franchises. The Rayman/Raving Rabbids line remains Ubisoft's best-selling franchise with 31 million units shipped, followed by Assassin's Creed (29 million units), Petz (23 million units), and Rainbox Six (23 million units). Splinter Cell closely follows its Tom Clancy cousin with 22 million units, while Ghost Recon has shipped 18 million units.

From there, Prince of Persia has shipped 17 million units, followed closely by Driver's 15 million units and the aforementioned Just Dance. The Settlers franchise has shipped 8 million units, while Brothers in Arms and Far Cry have both sold-in 7 million units. Rounding out the list were the Anno and Your Shape franchises, at 5 million units and 2 million units, respectively.

Looking ahead, Ubisoft expects to post similar revenue during its 2012 fiscal year, with sales expected to stand at €1.04 billion ($1.48 billion) and €1.08 billion ($1.54 billion). Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot also offered a tantalizing look at the days ahead, saying that the publisher's online segment will announce "an ambitious project on PC based on one of our top gamer franchises that will illustrate our capacity to take advantage of new business models."

Guillemot also noted that Trackmania 2 Canyon will enter a closed beta test in the coming months.

In a post-earnings conference call, Ubisoft also addressed the ongoing PlayStation Network outage, saying that while the impact on its business has been minimal, it is still significant.

"It is affecting the games that we launched, and it's affecting some games that we wanted to launch," Guillemot said. "We have a game that's been launched on XBLA, but has been delayed on PSN. The impact is still small because our revenue on this platform is not huge. Altogether, the cost will be minimal. It's important that they restore the system quickly because lots of our products are multiplayer games."

@zoopilandia That could actually be pretty amazing if done well. IE, player owned housing, pvp, customisable weapons, customisable armor...I think that an AC MMO could work. Remember, people said the same thing about Guild Wars. :P

Thats cool for them and such. But after getting the new Game Informer and seeing that Revelations is mainly going to be a continuing of Ezio story, I have completely lost interest in it. Enough with the side story crap and actually make Assassins Creed 3.

AC2 Brotherhood's ending was so blatantly rushed too. I can't believe such a big game had such a lazy ending. Embarrasing! I loved AC2's ending though, although running around opening up all the chests in the city was busy-work.

@x-2tha-z Assassin's Creed has at least shown a bit of evolution in every console iteration. They had a ton to fix between one and two (which had a couple of years between them) and they did. Two to Brotherhood is much more subtle, but the combat, when it comes down to it, is greatly improved, despite the short development cycle. Plus, the story of Assassin's Creed is what draws a lot of people in, so as long as they don't jump the shark (which could happen with a convoluted story like this), most people will be happy to keep buying them. Story has nothing to do with GH and SHOULD have nothing to do with CoD (though there's some people out there who dig it).

Cool - I like the AC series although I think AC:BH could've been much better. AC2 so far is my favorite!

@Charliesix I agree. So was Brotherhood. I wish they'd bring Altair back. I like his brash personality more than Ezio's.

I wish the AC2 games had better storytelling. The core game is too devoid of narrative. The games just say "Here's a bunch of stuff to do! Just do it." The background story is interesting but it's too.. well, background. I'm surprised no one has been offended by the game's background story too. The Templars are almost all evil right-wing capitalist types. In the comic books, Al Gore is backed by the Assassins, while Bush is backed by the Templars!

Ambitious announcements on PC gaming usually mean another company's going to try (and typically fail) to do a fresh MMORPG. Pretty please can the MMO phase pass so that companies will get back to focusing on making games for gamers who primarily do single player gaming?

If by "ambitious" they mean tons of DRM that prevents people from enjoying the game then count me out.

PC project from the Online segment? Yup, it's going to be a MMO. There are too many possible options for this MMO to be based on, but there is a high chance that AC will get its MMO.

I'm in no rush to buy Revelations. I didn't enjoy Brotherhood as much as 2, even though Brotherhood was probably the better game. I think I didn't enjoy it as much because there wasn't much of a gap between me playing 2 and Brotherhood. Take note devs, this is how you kill a franchise; keep releasing new games every year until everyone is sick of them. Happened to many big-name games, including Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk. I'm surprised everyone isn't sick of COD yet, but it's coming.

Meh, I got this game for Christmas, but hadn't even finished AC2 yet(and still haven't) so I returned it. The game play just gets way too stale, repetitive, un-challenging, and boring to keep interested. The story is vastly overrated too.

I think the negative emphasis on the one-year turn-around time for the Assassin's Creed games is over-stated. (And yes, that's a lot of hyphens.) ..... Think about it: if a blockbuster AAA game takes a team of 120 people three years to make, while another blockbuster AAA game takes a team of 200 people two years (CoD: Black Ops) to make, why are people up in arms when Ubisoft has literally hundreds of people working on this series for a one year turn-around? Have you seen the number of Ubisoft studios involved in getting this series made?!? The presentation values are *still* better than most of what's out there. ..... Having said that, I think we'd be fair-minded in expecting significant gameplay enhancements for Assassin's Creed 3 in 2012 - I bet Ubisoft has a had one team working on that since AC2 wrapped.

@EIFlechero @mattg90520 Of course it will sell less. AC2 came out in 2009, Brotherhood in 2010. There is another one THIS year. It will sell even less. Also there will be ANOTHER ONE in 2012. Yeah, this is not milking. Give me break...

I'm surprised that Brotherhood hasn't sold as many as AC2 did. It's by far the best Assassin's Creed so far. The new installments of this series are nothing like milked franchises like COD or GH, Brotherhood had tons of little tweaks and improvements to the basic gameplay, an amazing, huge new city with totally original gameplay elements, a lengthy continuation of the story, and the completely new addition of multiplayer. If that's milking the series, I can drink quite a bit of milk. hehe

So, Brotherhood, the game that was supposed to have more appeal due to its multiplayer inclusion, has so far sold less? Clue in developers: MP doesnt make games heavy on SP any better or more fun. That being said, I love the franchise, and cannot wait to see where Revelations takes us.

I love AC but it is milking when a new one comes out every year. This will ruin the franchise.

Both AC1 and AC2 sold 9 million units... Ubisoft will milk this franchise to dead. Apparently it started dying...
