Assassin's Creed Shadows Trailer Reveals Two Protagonists, A Samurai And A Shinobi

The new Assassin's Creed game will let us play as Yasuke, the African samurai.

Assassin's Creed Shadows, the next game in Ubisoft's long-running action-adventure series, is scheduled to launch November 15, just a little over a year after Assassin's Creed Mirage. And as confirmed by the new cinematic reveal trailer, you can play Shadows three days earlier if you're paying $18 a month for Ubisoft Plus' Premium Plan. Shadows will feature a larger map akin to Assassin's Creed Origins, and incorporate an ally system similar to Assassin's Creed III.

Shadows will feature two playable protagonists: Yasuke and Naoe. Whether you'll be able to quickly switch between the two within the same mission or only between big story beats (like Assassin's Creed Syndicate, the best Assassin's Creed game) remains to be seen. The two have different gameplay styles. As a samurai, Yasuke is a fighter who excels out in the open, while Naoe, as a shinobi, is armed with the franchise's signature hidden blade and is better at sneaking and stabbing.

Now Playing: Assassin's Creed Shadows - Official Cinematic Reveal Trailer

Initially codenamed Project Red, Shadows was already confirmed to take place in feudal Japan, but the cinematic trailer narrows the window even further with Naoe's talks of "unification" pointing toward the end of the Sengoku period and Yasuke's inclusion--a samurai who operated during the tail end of the Sengoku period--further pointing to that time period.

In an interview with IGN, Ubisoft Quebec mentioned that Shadows will incorporate an ally-recruitment system that's reminiscent of how Connor could meet people and build a thriving homestead in Assassin's Creed III. "Naoe and Yasuke, they do have allies in the world and they do help people and sometimes they can help them find what they're looking for and everything is centralized around them building a hideout where their friends and allies can help them--[this] is an integral part of the exploration loop," creative director Jonathan Dumont said. "You can call on those allies once in a while."

No Caption Provided

"They are your eyes and ears on the field so if you use them properly, they will help you to find what you're looking for or what you missed," game director Charles Benoit added.

In that same interview, Dumont compared the size of Shadows to that of Origins, putting it on the larger side when it comes to the franchise but not coming anywhere close to the scale of the massive open worlds seen in Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Valhalla.

Assassin's Creed Shadows preorders are live and the game is scheduled to launch for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, PC, Mac, and Amazon Luna.

Everyone is thinking it, so I’ll just say it. Why the black samurai? They finally made a samurai game and then made the actual playable samurai black, just to check that box. It’s not about skin color. It’s about logic. It’s dumb and forced, which makes it really cringey. People wanted an authentic Japanese setting and samurai.

If the game is good (doubtful), it doesn’t really matter that much, it’s just really dumb. Big wigs don’t care about authenticity anymore.

@illegal_peanut: not really a samurai. They reached big time, but it is what it is. It’s just a video game and it’s just Ubisoft. They only ever make 7/10 games or worse anymore. Just another wash cycle that I’ve already forgotten about. This laundry will never get finished.

@illegal_peanut: but he wasn’t a real historical samurai. There is nothing to back up that claim. Being a black guy in feudal Japan that held a sword does not make him a samurai. Just like you sleeping in a bikini next to a slug doesn’t make you Princess Leia.

@joecollin: The raceswapping is almost secondary at this point. It's modern Ubisoft, you know exactly what you're getting into.

@joecollin: At this point, western AAA gaming is guilty until proven innocent…it’s better to wait a few weeks to see how much of the game is unfinished, over-monetized and/or narratively incoherent due to activism/politicization.

All while Eastern devs are eating their lunch and watching them make their way to the unemployment line

@joecollin: We already have an authentic Japanese setting and samurai - to be fair - it's called Ghost of Tsushima. It's excellent and a far cooler experience than most Ubisoft open worlds.

But I don't know if EVERYONE is thinking it anyway - what I find more interesting is why the chose to use a REAL historical figure as their protagonist, as it feels that could be limiting to writing because of that. I'm pretty sure this is the first time they've done that.

But I definitely think y'all (it's not just you) need to start to chill about the race stuff. Like this has been going on for years now. It's okayyou don't have to buy it, play it, or like it - but someone out there will feel pretty cool getting to play a protagonist that looks like them for once.

@erustenebrus: we’re not talking about Ghost of Tsushima, we’re talking about Assassin’s Creed. AC fans have been wanting a feudal Japan setting for a long time now. As I said, if it’s good who cares, it’s just an annoyance.

But it’s a Ubisoft game, so most likely it’s more of the same rinse and repeat missions with grindy and mind numbing open world activities, with nothing that’s actually worth exploring. As is the popular description “gameplay loop.” If everything is a tedious, boring loop (rinse and repeat), then I don’t want it. Make it interesting. Make missions, locations, activities, loot, and exploration unique and rewarding, instead of typical “loop” based boredom, where nothing is interesting.

@erustenebrus: "but someone out there will feel pretty cool getting to play a protagonist that looks like them for once"

So the Asian guys doesn't like to play as someone who looks like them?
Yasuke was with Oda for only 16 months. In no way or form was he a Samurai. He was a sword carrier for him. No one can become a samurai, skill including, in 16 months.

This is just BS of the highest order. Racism towards Japanese.

@daidochus: It's not racism towards anyone. It's fiction. Nobody is fooled at all: the sudden concern for "historical accuracy" that always crops up in these situations is nothing but a pretense.

What's racist is how rabidly (and predictably) selective about the "willing suspension of disbelief" (and things like "historical accuracy") the usual suspects get when confronted with something like this and how hard they work at turning every comment board and review system they can find into a way of manufacturing false confirmation for themselves that "everyone" agrees with them about their tantrum.

But you're right: there really are no games out there that allow Asian folks to enjoy playing a game as someone who looks like them...just totally absent from the market for some reason...

As to "why a black samurai"? Because Yasuke is a real historical figure who really existed and is quite famously Japan's first black samurai. Despite what will no doubt be great liberties and poetic license taken with all of the historical facts involved (as with any AC game), his inclusion is a way of grounding the story in actual history.

He's just as real as William Adams, the English pilot ("Anjin") that the book/show Shogun turns into a white savior character.

You may now all return to your regularly scheduled tantrums claiming that Yasuke's inclusion is somehow "ahistorical"...

@Friskybar: OK, but semantics, really. People can't really go "inaccurate!" in a series with aliens and whatnot was my point. Popes and George Washington and Pythagoras being Templars and aliens, no one cares, but a black "samurai" and "how dare they be inaccurate!"

AC has never been about realism or accuracy. It's the most bananas franchise in games (that isn't made my Hideo Kojima). People gotta chill.

@esqueejy: - Assassin's Creed III

- Liberations (Sadly was a PS Vita exclusive for a long while until it quietly hped onto consoles and PC)

- Freedom Cry (Pretty much a story expansion for Black flag after you beat it)

- Origins

- China (Some side scroller AC game one in a long series no one really plays)

- India (Same thing I said about China)

So 2 mainline, and 4 short extras that were barely advertised at all... I'm seeing an annoying pattern with these. Don't you?

@illegal_peanut: Nope. I'm seeing games that included non-white protagonists, STARTING WITH THE VERY FIRST ONE, that nobody threw tantrums about, spewing the current "DEI" trigger-word nonsense as a product of the reactionary Great Replacement cultural resentment propaganda getting shoved through the idiocy pipeline by the tiki torch types all over right wing media (which now includes Mr. Muskptlk's Twitter).

@esqueejy: Yeah, people don't really get the fact that AC has always had diverse characters. I bring up those games above because literally, no one had a problem with them. But this was the game everyone is losing their minds about. To make it even worse none of the characters in the games I listed were based on any real character besides Conner. And Conners's character is just a vague "Native American Gorilla Soldier from the 18th century.". It's so vague he could've been male or female.

That Samurai is based on a real Samurai who lived. And to make it crazier everyone agreed he was a Samurai before. People made countless references to him there are like 2 animes based on him. And now everyone is acting like he never existed at all.

@illegal_peanut: No one said he didn't exist. The highely debated topic is if he was a samurai or not. But the mass majority of people who actually know Japanese history. Including historians. Agree that he probably wasn't a samurai at all. The agreed upon theory is that Nobunaga bought him as a token slave because black people were extremely rare back then and just used him as his retainer.

At the same time. There were no official records of Kunoichi's(female ninja's) existing in Japan either. Now you can't 100% say they didn't exist. But they were probably so rare that they just never got documented. There are ironically documented female samurai's.

But I will argue that he absolutely did not have modern day dreadlocks. It would have either been short or shaved.

Second, I stopped following AC after Valhalla's announcement trailer. So I don't even know who that is.

@Friskybar: Yes, ancient Egyptians were black. They were also Arab, Jewish and Caucasian. Historians actually consider ancient Egypt to be quite mixed/heterogeneous. At the very least, there has been "controversy" over it (an unfortunate go-to word that carries stupid connotations not applicable to an honest academic debate).

@ceelogreen94: how is it that you see the phrase “internet demographics” and immediately think race. And then try to paint him into a corner as a racist hiding his “true colors.” That’s pathetic, but basically tells me that you see race in everything- making you as much a part of the problem as those on the other side of the coin.

@mogan: Thank you for clearing that up. I'm like most African Americans on my opinion on this one. It's nice to have Decent Representation for once instead of putting us in a Game like GTA when we are running from the police or selling drugs. This may not be accurate I don't know but I think it's kind of cool for once, that is my stance on this.

If they're going to do multiple playable characters, I definitely prefer making them each different characters, rather than different versions of the same character.
