Avengers: Endgame Is The Top-Grossing Movie Of All Time - With One Caveat

You kind of need to squint.

After looking as if it would fall short despite a second push at the box office, Avengers: Endgame has officially broken the record to become the highest-grossing movie of all time. Marvel Studios announced that it had broken the record at its panel at Comic-Con, telling fans the movie has topped the $2.78 billion mark worldwide. But that record hinges on taking the numbers at their face value; analyzed a different way, and Endgame's record is a little less secure.

Endgame was a box office powerhouse when it released back in April, dragging in a near record-breaking amount of money--but despite its monster opening, the movie wasn't quite able to take the box office earnings record from another enormous movie: director James Cameron's Avatar. According to Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige, that situation as changed, however, with Disney announcing at San Diego Comic-Con that Endgame has overtaken Avatar's box office record. "I literally just heard from our folks at Disney Distribution that Avengers: Endgame will be the biggest film of all time," Feige said during the Marvel Studios panel in Comic-Con's Hall H.

Now Playing: Marvel Studios Comic-Con 2019 Panel Reactions | SDCC 2019

As noted above, there is a catch, though.

"You have to shout out to [Avatar director] James Cameron--if you adjust for inflation he still holds that title, but right now, thanks to you folks in Hall H, Avengers: Endgame is the biggest film of all time," Feige said.

That means that in straight numbers, Endgame has surpassed Avatar's total box office take of $2.78 billion. But as Feige mentioned, the world was different in 2009, when Avatar was released, and inflation means that $2.78 billion was worth more then than it is now.

You might also recall that Disney and Marvel Studios worked pretty hard to get that record out of Cameron's hands. The company returned Endgame to theaters on June 28 with a small amount of extra footage added on the end, so it could soak up even more money. Before its "farewell" tour, Endgame had only raked in $2.74 billion. Still, a record is a record, and Disney fought to take this one. That said, the movie it topped is now--by virtue of the 21st Century Fox acquisition--under the same Disney umbrella as Marvel.

"Adjusting for inflation" is retarded. I'm not going to tell people I bought a $10,000 guitar because the one I have now is worth that much. I bought it for 200, so it's a 200 dollar guitar.

@stage4saiyan: It would be a $10,000 guitar if you sold it again for that. It's not at the moment, I agree.

@stage4saiyan: Not to mention, at today's prices, would people have gone to Avatar? They say the same with Gone With The Wind. But that assumes everybody who saw it then would have at today's prices. I doubt that. if you have to adjust for inflation, you've got nothing.

@atherworld: avatar made that much money because of the 3D sales and I guarantee it would still have made a ton of money today because the movie was a technological marvel and still to this day the most amazing 3D experience I’ve ever experienced. Even if the script was pretty generic, you can’t discount the sheer spectacle of the entire movie. I’d see it again if it came out just to see the 3D again, and I’m sure a lot of people are anticipating the sequels for the same reason. (A good plot would be nice the next time around though)

@atherworld: You're both missing the point of adjusting movie prices for inflation, it gives a sense for how many people actually went to see a movie.

If movie A made $10 mil spand cost $1 to see and movie B made $50 and cost $10, movie A was actually more successful.

Furthermore, inflation doesn't just affect prices, but what people earn. So no, back when Gone With the Wind was released people would not have paid what we do now, it would have been ridiculously expensive.

$10 today is worth less, i.e. has less buying power, than $10 a hundred years ago, or any other time in between.

@stage4saiyan: It's not retarded, thinking that "adjusting for inflation" is retarded is retarded.

$1 fifty years ago isn't the same as $1 today. $1 in 1950 can buy you lots of things as on average you would only make $0.75, yes, 75 cents, a day. Today on average you make $10 an hour.

A $200 guitar 50 years ago would be an extremely expensive purchase as it is the equivalent of 267 days of work, and probably costed more than some second hand cars. A $200 guitar today would only be the equivalent of maybe 2 days of work.

@chaosbrigade: In 1950, assuming you're from the United States, the average hourly (not daily) income was $0.75, due to the Fair Labor Standards Act (1938). The history teacher in me saw your comment and had to correct it! Haha cheers!

@Poodger: sure the plot was forgettable but the special effects and the world James Cameron created were astounding from a visual standpoint. And the generic and done-before plot was backed up by good actors and not-horrible dialogue. The plot being recycled didn’t really get noticed until after the first few weeks. yeah it’s not cool or original to recycle stuff but I never felt scammed out of my $15. I’ve had some terrible meals for $40+ but at least at the end of the day I got fed, you know? If Cameron thinks he can pump out 4 more sequels tho, he’ll be in for a rude awakening if he doesn’t back it up with a decent plot this time.

@Poodger: It's nothing refreshing when that forgettable mediocrity was replaced by another forgettable mediocrity.

I find it a little sad that such incredibly boring and monotonous CGI-action crapfests battle it out almost at the 3 million $ mark, while something like Blade Runner 2049 flops, for example.

The average movie-goers taste sure goes to shit more and more.

@Welverin: Yea, nowadays no CGI action set pieces with cringe one-liners equals boring. You can make the same movie 23 times and it'll still make money. Emphasis on atmosphere, cinematography, story and dialogue nets you a flop.

@Berserk8989: Just because someone calls a movie boring, doesn't mean they expect constant action and explosions every five second.

Furthermore, action movies can be painfully boring as well.

@Berserk8989: Blade Runner 2049 was average. It stayed too much to the original and didn't try to do anything creative or be relatable to the 21st century.

@chaosbrigade: I largely agree. However, I respect the fact that the movie didn't try to adjust its vision of the future on the basis of actual historical developments that transpired between 1981 and 2017. For example, in the world of "Blade Runner 2049", Atari and Pan Am are still thriving businesses (as in the original's conception of 2019).

Also hard to compare when the times are so diff. Pirating is a bigger thing today and there are more people today than there were back then. Also China is being less horrible and is allowing its people to see more movies lol.

Any statistic can be manipulated to make it favour your preferred outlook. The only way that this could possibly be resolved is to count the number of ticket sales.

Noone cares "who sold the most" these days anyway.

@gotrekfabian: Producers do. That's what the box office is, a figure for the production companies to latch on to and define success. Ticket sales would be great, for us. Not for the people who want to make money. They want to see the numbers.

@grandtheftaugust: Profit is profit so why would they need to trumpet their success? Because of one-upmanship, that's why. The only statistic that matters whereby success of a film is concerned is ticket and/or dvd/Blu-ray/digital sales but human nature dictates that people have to go out of their way to state "Mine's better than yours".

Actually, adjusted for inflation, "Gone With The Wind" is still the all-time box office champ.

https://wwwhttps://www.imdb.com/list/ls026442468/

boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted.htm

Also, "Avatar", "Titanic", "Star Wars", and "Gone With The Wind" all had re-releases that count toward their totals.

Also, everybody, stop using box office numbers to spread toxic fandom.

Come to think about, stop being toxic full-stop. It great to like what you like and it's great other people like what they like.

Except "Twilight", screw that noise.

@RevRockwell: Adjusted for inflation shows the TRUE impact/effect and cultural phenomenons that the top films were, not what they do now. The list as it is now, did not have the impact/effect like the adjusted flicks! All of those in the top ten stayed on people's minds decades are they were released. The only except/deception, was The Force Awakens, which only made money on hype and using the original cast.

Well, if we're adjusting for inflation then the winner isn't Endgame or Avatar, but Star Wars: A New Hope, which adjusting for inflation earned around $3.27bn worldwide.

@bigdavex: Gone With the Wind is the biggest movie if you adjust with inflation, it's around 3.7 billions.

Also, I am pretty sure if you don't count the rereleases that Titanic, Avatar and Endgame got, Avengers Endgame definitely beat the other 2.
