Baldur's Gate 3 Is GameSpot's Game Of The Year 2023

Here's what makes Baldur's Gate 3 our choice for the best game of the year.

I can point to the exact moment I knew Baldur's Gate 3 would be a banger. Last year, Kurt Indovina wrote, hosted, and produced a video--aptly named The Box That Broke Baldur's Gate 3--in which Swen Vincke spoke in great detail about how Larian Studios utilized everything short of witchcraft to program Baldur's Gate 3 to twist and turn on itself to ensure that, regardless of the choices a player wanted to make, they'd always end up with an artifact in their inventory necessary to progress the game's plot.

In that video, I witnessed the desperation any Game Master has dealt with, the mixture of adaptability and exasperation necessary to plan a rewarding story and simultaneously agonize over contingencies for every chaotic thought the players at your table might have. At that moment, I knew that Larian Studios understood the assignment. The developers knew that, first and foremost, the most crucial aspect of Dungeons & Dragons is encouraging and rewarding choice by trying to account for as many outcomes as possible, no matter how unlikely, every step of the way through the story. The result of honoring that ideal is the best game of 2023.

Now Playing: Why Baldur's Gate 3 Is GameSpot's Game Of The Year 2023

Baldur's Gate 3 works so well because Larian cleverly uses every aspect of the game to lead your creativity back to the established narrative, curating a feeling that all options are viable and correct. Clever writing and the best all-around voice acting of any game this year bring Baldur's Gate 3's characters and memorable narrator to life, incentivizing you to pursue their respective storylines and follow their objectives. Intelligent enemy AI responds to your actions so even repeated combat encounters against the same enemies feel distinct, with your choices shaping fights to play out in myriad ways. Humorous discoveries seem to dot every corner of the multitude of locations, some of which can only be fully uncovered by having certain items or access to specific spells, so even after you reach the limits of the map, there's often still a sense of mystique and discovery to the world as if you've barely scratched the surface of it all. And the random nature of dice rolls ensures you can't always succeed at what you want to do and sometimes have to reevaluate, pushing you down a path that seems inspired even though Larian carefully authored it with the same care as all the other ways forward.

It's a testament to Baldur's Gate 3's success that players (myself included) are taking inspiration from it for their D&D tables to improve the experience of playing the original tabletop game. The way Baldur's Gate 3 handles the Guidance cantrip, short rests, healing potions, and a whole host of other aspects of D&D helps the game maintain the momentum of play far better than its tabletop counterpart. And, like everything else, these changes are in service of choice--they give you more options in both roleplay and combat scenarios. And sure, Baldur's Gate 3 can't possibly be as reactive and offer as many possibilities as a real-life person directing the action, but damn if it doesn't emulate the sensation of playing D&D with a great Dungeon Master better than any other role-playing game out there, culminating in one of the most memorable stories in video games in years. Heck, you don't even have to deal with the frustration of bringing a group of friends together every week for three hours to experience it!

The game is just brilliant. Larian Studios has set a new benchmark for what developers can accomplish in a single-player RPG, and I won't be surprised if we see more studios attempt to emulate Baldur's Gate 3's success when it comes to designing choice-driven narratives. And whether anyone--perhaps even including Larian itself--can live up to that benchmark it has established is hardly a given.

There aren't many RPGs that you can point to where the consequences of even character creation can still be felt dozens of hours into the main plot, informing your dialogue options and your choices for getting around. But even beyond the main story, every aspect of the game celebrates player freedom and shapes itself to respond to the choices you've made. Almost all of your companions are down to sleep with you if you put in the effort (even Astarion for the folks who want to role-play the poor romantic decisions they make in real life) to color your playthrough with unique and emotionally gratifying romantic arcs, for instance, and combat mechanics are flexible enough to fit even the most ludicrous and unpredictable of strategies.

Jake Dekker words it perfectly in GameSpot's Baldur's Gate 3 review: "The freedom that [Baldur's Gate 3] offers is unprecedented, and it takes a little while to really see the scope of what that means for the game. At times, the sheer number of choices and consequences can be overwhelming. But before long, it becomes apparent that Baldur's Gate 3 allows players to be the authors of their own destinies in a way no other game has before."

Baldur's Gate 3's greatest accomplishment is that, whenever you think, "I wonder if I can do this..." there's a strong chance the response is, "Yes, yes you can."

I wish I was into this, but it seems like you have to like DnD to appreciate it, and I really don't. I'm glad the people who like it, *really* do, and I wish I could be part of that.

Lots of great games this year, otherwise.

@HAWK9600: Real table top D&D is a lot of work, especially if you want a good experience. Many people just don't know how or even want to put in that effort. I get that. But BG3 in simple terms really is not THAT different than other RPG games in terms of why you do what you do in the game. Which is playing a role, solving problems. BG3 does it better than ever on technology than before.

BG3 -easily game of the year, though I had just as much fun with Zelda. Sea of stars, I hope wins a ton of awards, amazing game. Spiderman 2 laced story but an amazing 'leap' in gaming (amazing look and set pieces). Not played Alan Wake 2 yet, it is on my list for sure.

I plan to avoid the games award show, I know there will probably be a ton of FF7Rebirth spoilers.

There is no better game this year. Even as a Zelda fan, I preferred Baldur’s Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2.

Wasn't my favorite because I don't love turn-based but honestly just happy the retread Zelda didn't win. I'm a huge Zelda fan but TOTK was wayyyy too similar to BOTW

I think it's deserved. I'd vote for it too although on a personal level it's near the bottom of the list for the games I played this year. It's hard for me to pick a favorite but my most enjoyed games would be between Dead Space, RE4, Armored Core 6, and Alan Wake 2.

sadly at the end of the day it is just another turn based game and to me turn based just seems so outdated anymore cuz of the tech we have for gaming now i am more into more action and maybe that is why i like ff16 so much yeah it didnt really have alot of combat but the combat it did have was basic but fast same with forspoken for me even with all the hate the game got lol but i am not saying BG3 is a bad game i am sure the story is great but for me turn based just got boring to me and if i want turn based combat i have alot of games that have that but maybe some year ill buy and play it my back log is very big

Great choice and also likely meant Gamespot voting for BG3 in TGA. Tbh no games innovate more than BG3 this year so giving it to any other will make it seem a biased pick.

@sakaixx: Alan Wake 2 was innovative as hell. The dual realities, rewriting scenes in order to progress and things like the rock show chapter in The Dark Place were amazing.

@sakaixx: I'm not sure I agree. Tears of the Kingdom's innovation with ultrahand and how everything interacts with the physics engine was a huge deal to me, and the impact of that kind of innovation will lead to better games being made across all genres.

@HAWK9600: I'm late to this comment but how does Ultrahand lead to better games "across all genres"? I played Roblox in 2008 and we could attach things to other things back then and make vehicles, and there were physics and everything.

It's a mechanic that is nice if you're specifically looking for a vehicle building game, but that kind of tacked-on mechanic can ruin an established series for many people. Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts is a good example of this.

Tears was better received than N&B because most of the people who played it had never played a Zelda game before BotW. Sales reflect this. People who grew up playing Minecraft and Fortnite are also likely more receptive to building mechanics and open-world games than people who grew up with past Zelda games.

What I'm getting at is that TotK is largely intended to appeal to a different demographic and has a different appeal at its core; it may lead to better games of that type, but not all types.

@HAWK9600: Interesting, I thought the ultrahand thing was just copied from others, though much well defined and updated. Still just a copy. As are the old school physics models on many modern games.

I played the trial on PS5 and I don't know how to play it. I'm confused by everything. I WANT to enjoy it due to all the hype but I just don't get it.

Do I need to be a D&D person? What tips can anyone give me to get started and into it?

@idiom3: This. I've bounced hard off Larian's games, and it honestly feels like a have a blindspot for this kind of experience. People just really love when your actions change dialogue/events in the story.

I must be playing it wrong because after three attempts at starting a game and 3 years of EA, I just find it extremely slow and boring. Uninstalled for the second time yesterday, I think it was the last chance for me. Too similar to DOS 2, too far in spirit to the Baldur's Gate I cherished as a kid.

@lord_vynos: its not for you its fine just drop it for something else. I mean there some games over the years that received outstanding reviews like BoTW, Overwatch or Metro Last Light that I just dont understand. Decent games those probably are but I just moved on and play something else. Those games just not for me and I am fine with it.

@blaznwiipspman1: That’s good joke. Starfield wasn’t even nominated for GOTY anywhere because the game is simply bad, the kind of bad that not even patches can fix because the problems with the game are the game itself, not just bugs. This is why nobody takes Bethesda fanboys seriously anymore. It’s like saying Redfall is your GOTY. I guess you’re just trolling, bringing up Starfield because nobody else did? It took over 15 years to make that game and it still flopped and failed to sell systems. Fraud Howard fails once again.

@blaznwiipspman1: starfield was my biggest disappointment of 2023. I kept my series x to play it, but now I think I may sell the Xbox, just don’t use it. Beat starfield and did 3 new game plus and it’s just not as captivating as their previous titles. I’m still playing Skyrim on a regular basis, but you won’t catch me playing starfield 12 years from now.

@Mickeyminime: Spider-Man 2 has a 90 Metacritic, but even most PS5 diehards gave their GOTY pick to Baldur’s Gate 3, myself included, and I loved Spider-Man 2. They’re realists and don’t deny that BG3 is a masterpiece. I’ll give second place to Alan Wake 2, and then RE4 Remake. That said, Spider-Man 2 is in my Top 5 for this year with Sea of Stars.

@mogan: There has been a huge resurgence, a renascence for RPGs of all kinds, especially CRPGs. From Larian games, div, div II, BG3, to Pillars of eternity, Disc Elysium, Wasteland, ShadowRunners, Tyranny, and more, not counting excellent MMRORPG experiences like FF16 and wow dragonflight.

Save for 1994-98, this has been some of the greatest times to enjoy CRPGs, ... sigh I really hope it lasts.

@silentchief: I didn't think Larian had given sales numbers. I saw an article saying sales could be in the 7-8 million range based off of achievements and Larian saying 1.3 million people across all platforms have beaten it, but that's loose math.

I'd guess BG3 is selling quite well, but not at Cyberpunk or Hogwarts levels; it is still a CRPG with a fair amount of clunk to it. Larian's got to be thrilled with its performance though.
