Battlefield 4 on Xbox One could feature head-tracking

DICE examining possibility of using Kinect sensor to allow players to peek and lean around corners, speak voice commands.

Battlefield 4 on Xbox One could feature Kinect-powered head-tracking, executive producer Patrick Bach said in a new interview on the Xbox Wire.

No Caption Provided

He explained that DICE is "looking into" features that "enhance" controls, including using Kinect for peeking and leaning, as well as further head-tracking. This is in addition to using Kinect for voice commands.

In July, DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson said Battlefield 4 would use Kinect on Xbox One only "where it will make sense."

"We have a pretty pragmatic view [on Kinect]," Magnus Troedsson said at the time. "Instead of just trying to tick all the boxes of features you can do with new hardware, we look at what actually adds value [for] our players."

Also in the Xbox Wire interview, Bach confirmed that Battlefield 4 on Xbox One will support 64 players and run at 60 frames-per-second. "This is a big deal for us because it's always something we've wanted to deliver but we couldn't do it without taking away from the core 'Battlefield' experience," he said.

Battlefield 4 launches on October 29 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. The PlayStation 4 version arrives on November 12, while the Xbox One iteration hits November 19.

A current-generation console and PC multiplayer beta for Battlefield 4 begins on October 1.

This actually sounds pretty cool if they get it to work. But don't forget... it's Microsoft....

From the interview: "Also, with Kinect, we’re looking into features that enhance the controls including peeking and leaning and tracking head movement as well as incorporating voice commands".

looking into....possibly...maybe...in the future....

=gimmick that still ain't gonna work.

Shouldn't Kinect be KICKING ASS on launch day with Battlefield 4 and other launch games???? Nope it won't be. Sell the kinect when there are actual cool/amazing things that can CURRENTLY be done with it. Or sell it separately for the people who want the $100 doorstop of the future.

@MAGIC-KINECT I wouldn't say they're selling it. They're making you pay for it and have it regardless.

I hate the Kinect and I'm getting the XB1. However this sounds cool if the cn get it to work. I also find myself leaning trying to peak around or over things while playing.

As cool as it may sound on paper, I wouldn't this feature unless I had a head mounted display.

On Kinect this is a gimmick at best. In the Oculus Rift... it's mind blowing. Combined... it's the matrix! :P

@tomservo51 @Adavanter Holodeck. I prefer the matrix take on it as I believe simulating an event in your brain is far more likely than simulating an environment around you.

Well... as far as true immersion goes. Of course one is also likely to have severe psychological effects :P

@tomservo51 Well the brain is basically an organic computer. We will be altering it sooner than we will be altering matter in giant rooms lol.

Again I'm only talking practicality... tons of scary things like freewill could be altered or any number of dangerous side effects...

@tomservo51 I'm not saying which universe I want to take part in. I'm talking about the technology behind it.

The Matrix is basically controlling your dreams. Meaning anything is possible. I don't know about you but I've had monsters, robots and many other crazy dreams...

The holodeck takes an entire room... and makes matter shape itself to be whatever is desired ect. Far more unlikely and a hell of a lot less practical.

But with the holodeck you can create any environment you want! In the Matrix your stuck with modern earth sim.

But of course they're not gonna do it, because that would mean free publicity for microsoft and kinect. No way EA gonna let that happen, DLC maybe.

Head tracking is really one of the features I'm most excited about the X1 for, as HT can really add a level of 3D imersion that you cannot get without 3D glasses.

I hope more companies play around with HT in the future. AC4 with HT would be myideal AC experience.

Well this is a cool feature. Imagine standing on the corner and leaning your head to to see whether there are enemies or not.

@Tygravius I do this ALL THE TIME!

Coming up the stairs at B on Metro, I always crane my head upwards to look over the stairs. I feel like an idiot afterwards when I realize its not doing anything for me... but I can't help it. :D

@malokevi @Tygravius lol...totally. If we all had camera's on us while playing games, it would be down right humiliating:) If this actually happens (which I'm sure it will) I got no qualms with it whatsoever....You can't say it's a "bad" thing.

They should add a headbutt or melee for the Kinect for when you get surprised by someone going around a corner. I never press it quickly enough on a controller.

@gamer7736 Agreed. Another thing I wan't (in COD and Splinter Cell, specifically) is the ability to physically punch a dog in the FACE!

Rather than jam the X button... it would be so satisfying.

(disclaimer: no dogs were actually punched in the face in the writing of this comment)

I loved peeking out on Graw and Graw 2, for a tactical shooter it is very useful, for a game like BF it's not really needed.
