Big No Man's Sky Update Launches This Week On PC/PS4 For Free

The patch notes will be shared soon.

The next big update for No Man's Sky is coming soon. Following a weird ARG campaign, developer Hello Games today announced that Update 1.3 is coming out this week. "Atlas Rises," as it's called, will be free on PC and PlayStation 4, just as the previous updates have been. The update focuses on "improving the central story," while it also adds a fast-travel feature by way of portals.

"It's been an exciting, intense, and emotional year for us at Hello Games," founder Sean Murray said in a release. "We have been quiet, but we have been listening intently. We've spent that year working hard on free updates for this game our team cares about so much."

No Caption Provided

The patch notes for the Atlas Rises update will be released soon.

Also in the release, Hello Games talked about why it launched the ARG campaign, Waking Titan, and revealed that more than 250,000 people came together to try to figure it out.

"What we do is much more important than what we say, but since launch we have sometimes focused too much on that," Murray said. "We wanted to reach out and celebrate the devoted community that means so much to us. We launched Waking Titan to try to do that. You've travelled great distances both real and virtual, undertaken complex tasks, and explored the depths of simulation theory. New friendships have been forged, and a tight-knit community has been created. Most importantly a cute hamster has a new home."

No Man's Sky's first update, the Foundation Update, added base-building and frigates, while the second, Path Finder, added land vehicles. Keep checking back with GameSpot for the latest on the new No Man's Sky update.

I'm curious about how the base building was done in this game? I mean one of the central things of the game was that you constantly keep moving from planet to planet so how exactly does setting up a base fit into that? I mean I like the idea of it but it seems to go against the central goal of the game. Same thing with the ground vehicle they added, all that stuff is about staying in one place but originally that's not what the game encouraged you to do so did they change the goal for the game? I do own this game but haven't played it since like two weeks after it launched. I was one of the people actually willing to wait for them to add the content for this which is why I didn't refund it but as of yet just haven't had the inclination to give it another go.

I like, and have from the beginning, enjoyed my time with this game, and I've played enough to get the platinum. Hello games recognizes the faults from launch, and have continued to support the title with free updates--that have improved the game--while many other companies get a free pass for adding paid DLC to full priced games, just to experience the actual game. I don't hate all DLC. Some companies offer legit, quality extras, which help to extend already great games. A lot of the hate this game has received is unfounded--if you actually bought the game thinking it would be multiplayer...seriously, you're a brainless meatbag. I understand some of the criticisms and even agree with them, but I also recognize the hard work that the developers have continued to put into a game that obviously means a lot to them, and I respect that.

still no paid DLC or microtransactions. Say what you will about its awful launch, they at least kept up with the updates and kept things free so far.

Same can't be said about these big corporate releases, save your hate for them and stop giving them a free pass with their day 1 DLC scams and microtransactions.

I think No Man's Sky has paid its dues by now, stop the hate hype train on them.

All this whining from people with a ridic level of their own expectations. A game is what it is, no more.

I still play it from time to time. It's my Saturday/Sunday morning w/coffee game. Not intense, just a light exploration of the galaxy. I dig it. My base is solid, my freighter warps in when needed, my only regret is not being able to find a v2 and v3 pass quickly and easily and naturally, which is irritating.

Looking forward to this week's update. Keep it coming, Hello Games.

lose the procedural bullcrap, design your game so that players don't get bored out of their minds. apply some game mechanic that are engaging. kudos for the scam of the year, but if they want to be taken seriously, they should approach the business like they are worth it. and also capable. next time if you release a walking simulator, call it walking simulator and don't make up stories about a game you'd like to play.

"For Free"

STOP saying that, not needed. The news are important and polemic if there is a patch that is not free someday. Every patch or update being called that way is always free and should be always free, no need to qualify that. The fact that you mention that at all in the title of the article is changing subconscious in this instance for all people.

It's impressive that they stuck with the game even after it crashed and burned. If they carry on like this it may actually end up quite good

I've always felt that HG would be well regarded in the long run and updates like this give me confidence I was correct. Without a doubt the launch of NMS is historic for all the news and fuss, but 10 years from now if they are still going strong that controversy is not going to be the measure they are judged by.

I give them absolute credit for not ditching the game after the immense hate they got. But from multiplayer to the depth of faction warfare and being able to destroy stations they simply lied.

Wether it was being sued over the tech or just feels pressuereed doesn't change that fact, I fond the game to be alright but everything. Performance to game play was an absolute disappointment for me after listening to the claims made.

I do give them credit for sticking with it but I just don't think this will be the game many wanted even with a crap ton of updates to do that I feel they will have to make an entire new game.

Even after release they lied they said updates would be free then they turned around and said there might be laid dlc.

I do wish them the best but I do think there are better products on the market now and In the works, and I'm not arguing wether they should or not but I feel they will come out reletivlly soon and announce a paid dlc to which will start the hate again.

I personally won't be buying anything they charge for just after the immense dissapoitment and lies before and after release but do wish them good luck

@UrbanMessiah: It was also a different era, back when fable came out the idea of continuously patching a game wasn't a thing back then. Only PC games got any real updates after the initial release. For consoles even the Day 1 Patch thing didn't really start up until the end of the 360 era and that was a method of speeding up shelf dates, they still didn't continually patch games at that point. This 'a product is never finished' method of game release is a newer occurrence brought on the early access titles.

@speedfog: That is great to hear, as I thought it was just my PS4 Pro that was overheating. Man, it sounded like a damn plane was taking off in my TV cabinet. While I don't play No Man's Sky anymore, not since the second week after it came out, my son enjoys just going around on some of the worlds. I walked past the living room about a week ago and thought my PS4 Pro was going to explode. I walked over and felt the top of the system, and it was way too hot, so I told him to change games for a bit. There was no reason that that game should cause the console to feel that hot.

I have to give credits to that company, and to Sean, for not simply abandoning the game and essentially just running away with some money in the process. He and his company keep working on it instead, despite all the negatives (some of which were fully deserved, however). I do really like it when a company, ANY company does that. Instead of 'fighting' the consumers and also insulting them for example, or saying something like "Oh yeah? You don't like our stuff? Then go away!" (to put it lightly), instead they look at the situation and think "Ok guys, let's keep working on this, improving it to the best of our capacity with the means we have at our disposal".

Regardless of the actual game itself being good or bad, being 'less bad' or 'better' than before is almost irrelevant now in the face of such commendable behavior in business. So props to Hello Games for basically not showing us the finger and instead just continuing on with the fairly regular updates (and remember guys, they ARE a VERY small team even by Indie team 'standards', they DO need months to give us significant updates; patience is the key both for them and for us).

@rekonym: I give them credit...they messed up, they took their lumps and instead of empty apologies, they opted to try and fix some of the fiasco. Most developers would've released the mess and let it go at that, and a few would've even blamed the player for expecting too much or the wrong things.

Honestly I enjoyed my brief time with the game and will probably come back at some point due to the free updates. A lot of people hated on it rather intensely, but I never felt the same disappointment. Sure, it could have been more but I watched the videos and interviews leading up to release and knew many of the things that people seemed to think would be in the game simply weren't going to happen (Like multiplayer of any kind). It made mistakes but the fact that they are continuing to work on it speaks volumes to me of how wrong people are about the developers.

People created the shitstorm, not them. They followed early videos and talks about the game, ignored further coverage and acted like it was the dev's fault for not constantly barraging them with info at every opportunity. Any other game does this? They get a quarter of the hate if any, i guarantee it.

@Bahamut50: Multiplayer was definitely going to happen. Sean Murray hinted that several times by saying that players would be able to see and interact with each other, but the chances of finding another player would be too slim.

My theory is that they weren't expecting two players to find the same planet, thinking their algorithm would generate such a vast universe that something like that would never happen. But apparently, after two players finding the same planet on a popular stream, they had to come out and say: the game doesn't have multiplayer.

You can even find on the physical copy of the game how they covered the Multiplayer sign with a sticker.

If one is able to forget all of the deceit and just look at the situation in a totally unbiased manner one might say that NMS will probably, after this update, be ready for early access release. After one or two extra updates it might finally look like a complete game worth buying. No joke.

But paying 60$ for the vanilla game, with no updates, different from what was announced and shown was certainly NOT worth it.

@moriwenne: I still think it wasn't so much deceit but that they were sued and forced to abandon the tech they were using which was responsible for many of the game's features. They had no idea how to handle the issue and Sony was presurring them to release on time, so that's why we got the game we did.

@Barighm: That's hard to say but I think if that were the case they would've come out and said as much. It might've affected a few things, but not masses of content. I followed the game since it was announced and it was clear that this was a small project, it was never intended to be as big as it was, meaning it wasn't supposed to be a full game. They never planned to have loads of quests and character progression, etc. It was more like minecraft. A tech that created planets. The tech just didn't have enough value and honestly I don't know how you would even get any value from having an unlimited number of planets, seems worthless.

Let's imagine you build one planet. You create the entire planet, some areas of interest and then you create navigation. Let's also say you can build on said planet. Then you create the need for extra resources that aren't available on said planet so you create the need, at some point, to build a spaceship and visit another planet. You start over on said planet. You use this formula a couple more times. In total you need 5 planets.

Now let's imagine you have multiplayer. A planet can hold 10k players. If you have more than that then you can use instances. So you don't want instances? Then you create new planets. So if a system of 5 can hold 50k players then you need 100 planets if you ever get to have 1million concurrent players and anyone can visit another planet system, join up with friends, etc. Everyone in the same universe. Quite a decent game but 100 planets? That's still a WAAAYYYS off of 1 bazzillion planets that their tech can create. Again...worthless tech :)
