Big No Man's Sky Update Launches This Week On PC/PS4 For Free

The patch notes will be shared soon.

The next big update for No Man's Sky is coming soon. Following a weird ARG campaign, developer Hello Games today announced that Update 1.3 is coming out this week. "Atlas Rises," as it's called, will be free on PC and PlayStation 4, just as the previous updates have been. The update focuses on "improving the central story," while it also adds a fast-travel feature by way of portals.

"It's been an exciting, intense, and emotional year for us at Hello Games," founder Sean Murray said in a release. "We have been quiet, but we have been listening intently. We've spent that year working hard on free updates for this game our team cares about so much."

No Caption Provided

The patch notes for the Atlas Rises update will be released soon.

Also in the release, Hello Games talked about why it launched the ARG campaign, Waking Titan, and revealed that more than 250,000 people came together to try to figure it out.

"What we do is much more important than what we say, but since launch we have sometimes focused too much on that," Murray said. "We wanted to reach out and celebrate the devoted community that means so much to us. We launched Waking Titan to try to do that. You've travelled great distances both real and virtual, undertaken complex tasks, and explored the depths of simulation theory. New friendships have been forged, and a tight-knit community has been created. Most importantly a cute hamster has a new home."

No Man's Sky's first update, the Foundation Update, added base-building and frigates, while the second, Path Finder, added land vehicles. Keep checking back with GameSpot for the latest on the new No Man's Sky update.

Sean Murray could have taken the money and ran after getting destroyed over his game....but he didnt, he spent the last year trying to make it better, adding new content, and even creating this ARG.....all on his own dime.

I think it says a ton about the guy and his integrity. I for one, am glad i bought No Mans Sky, have enjoyed it for what it is, and look forward to its future.

@Alecmrhand: He has some responsibility for the over hype and the consumers too. Everyone expected a real time Star Wars galaxy, something way more ambitious than any Bioware delusional dream and Murray hurried to explain it wasn't the case, still people refused to hear him.

Coding a full Universe generator in just less than 10gb is an incredible feat for itself but nobody cared about that, though I agree it could and should be a more exiting than the final result.

@Saladudo: Again, they were sued, and lost, over the algorithm they used. I think the real story is somewhere in there.

For people who are already hating on this update, u shud probably wait to see the real thing. Their last few updates were huge, and included lots of surprises that weren't announced. Considering they made such a big deal with this ARG event, im assuming this update is going to be a lot better than it sounds.

@garysan: "they made such a big deal". See, there's your problem. We've seen this before. And then you go on to assume that it will be better than advertised? I'd like to buy some of whatever you're on. It must be good stuff. I don't hate this game, but we need to stick to reality here.

For all the people that hate this game (who mostly haven't even played it) it's a lot better than at launch I hadn't played it for ages and decided to pick it back up when all this hype started again and it's actually a lot better, the base building add some missions and some sort of a goal and the buggies are cool and make exploring more fun. Hats off to them for not just sacking it off like a lot of other companies would have done, I was hoping for a bit more than just a portal though for this update, let's hope they have made more improvements to the terrain and species etc too

@rodoxthedark: your comment is exactly like The Elder Scrolls Online comment now: "It's a lot better since launch...". But really, this won't change much even with updates.

Yes the game could have totally received better impression if the dev didn't make the "PR mistake", if they describe the game exactly like what it should be at launch the devs would have a lot more incomes. The game is decent, it really shouldn't deserve the scandal that the devs created. But impression is impression, No Man Sky is labeled "No Man Buy" and it will always be in the eyes of players.

If Hello Games wants to fix their mistake they need to release an entire new game.

Why is this even front page news?

Year old game that was just a hype train and failed terribly. Dev's promise more a year later and its big news? ugh.

That's it? Quick Travel and a Story that nobody asked for. What People asked for Sean is Multiplayer Co-op, Ship Customization and more Crafting Variety for Bases, Vehicles etc... Honestly, what they added within a year is nothing but a complete fucking joke. Specially for €59.99, so saying these Updates are "Free" is funny considering nobody would pay for them to begin with and that they owe those that bought the Game at Full Price still a lot more "Free" Content.

Sorry, but within that year they should of had at the very least 4 Player Co-op.

Glad to hear there's a small but tight knit community following this game. It's as it should be. Granted they tried to bite off more than they could chew, but they're small (relative to the big players at least) and deserve a relatively sized fan base.

I did enjoy the first ten hours of the game, and I definitely liked the concept, but just as others did, I eventually got a bit bored. However, I haven't checked out any of the post-launch updates, so maybe I'll give it another shot at some point.

And uh... 'New Man's Sky'? Fantastic proof-reading, there, GameSpot. >_>

@Knighthawk_X: It sounded a lot better on paper. After we finally got a hands-on experience, it was an enormous disappointment. I really had high hopes for this game because as you and many others have stated before, the concept is great! I feel like it was just an overly ambitious project that they got to deep into before they realized they couldn't execute it as they had planned. And I still can't decided if that title is a typo or if it was done purposely.

Creatures still don't display correctly on discovery screen. Certain jelly-creatures are invisible. Joke of a game.

Also, who the heck is this Eddie guy? Far out, I've been reading GS for a while now and every article this guy 'writes' is just click-bait garbage. How does he still have a job?

@youkidding: Because it's just as you said, clickbait. He writes like 75% of the articles here and they all have typos, links because he's too lazy to report on his own, or just flame wars. He's also the Editor in Chief I believe.

If it launched with all these update I might have given a shit, now you couldn't pay me to start playing again.

"improving" the central story? There was something remotely akin to a story in NMS?
