BioWare MMORPG landing in 2009

Austin executive dates mystery game, says it will trump WOW technically by using enterprise software from a company associated with the CIA.

Last year, BioWare announced its entry into the massively multiplayer role-playing game market. The Canadian developer has enjoyed over a decade of critical and commercial success with its single-player RPGs for the Xbox and PC, such as Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. However, little is known about its first MMORPG, which is currently in the works at its Austin studio.

Now, a little more is known about the BioWare MMORPG. The most recent issue of Information Week contains an article examining some of the technology behind the project, which will reportedly use enterprise software from StreamBase Systems. In the course of the article, BioWare technical director Bill Dalton revealed that the MMORPG is currently slated to ship in 2009. As of press time, BioWare reps were unavailable to confirm the date for the game, which currently has no title, genre, publisher, or platform associated with it.

In the past, Massachusetts-based StreamBase has made headlines because it is partially owned by a company that provides technology to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). BioWare's MMORPG will use StreamBase's powerful software for "complex event processing" to sustain massive gamewide events involving thousands of players.

"With a multiplayer online game, you don't know whether you're going to have 1,000 people playing or 50,000," Dalton told the magazine. BioWare will also use StreamBase software to identify cheaters, prevent code hacks, and keep track of the MMORPG's customer base.

Funny how the BioWare hype never makes it to the game... Like when we were supposed to have that great DM client in NWN that would allow us to make real DM campaign decisions on the fly in the worlds we created... Only all we could ever do was make stupid modules and run static, heavily-modded persistent worlds that bogged down under the weight of so many 3rd party scripts... So, here we are in 2012 with an MMO that was supposed to ship in 2009 and it still lacks basic MMO features. Why am I not surprised...

Here it comes-at last!!! Just like a humongous freight train about to roll in---but hopefully not like the one in Super 8.

People seem to forget that WoW has ripped off generations of other fantasy lineages... who cares... just hope it's good. Why would anyone not go with things that work whether they were from WoW or not?

Bioware's strat has been to rip off WoW. The UI is 100% WoW. No imagination at Bioware.

Would be great to see it in 2009, but i really don't think it would, seeing no beta has been run yet. IF, and that's a HUGE IF it would come this year...it would be at the very end, November/December, even following in Jan 10. My guess is end of 2010 around August/September and ill just chuck a random date, the 19th...just because thats a Thursday and in Australia all new games gets released on Thursday :).

@Ibacai - The BioWare MMO has been in development for years. Is not like you announce a game and then start working on it. Most games have been in development for more then a year before they are announced.

Hmmm... I don't mind some MMO's but I'm extremely picky. I just hope they can immerse the same standard of feeling that it all depends on "you", not that your just replaying a mission that someone else will be advertising to help you with.

Bioware was working on this game, before EA bought em, so its just good for em to have a game like this. Anyways, it sounds sweet, looking for it.

I hate MMO'S... I LOVED KOTOR but now...I might never look at Star Wars again... Here's hoping Fallout 3 kicks ass... I haven't been this dissapointed since I gave up and admitted Rockstar isn't ever going to remake The Warriors for XBOX 360...like using the GTA IV engine...that'd be awesome...

The main problem with MMOs right now is the questing system and the continuity. I have always peferred single-player games because when you kill a boss or tough opponent, your success is always present because that boss is dead. In an MMO, they can't be permanently defeated. Also, quests usually turn into mindless marathons of various things to do. That gets boring after a while, and most people usually don't even bother reading quests for the lore or story, but instead only want to know how many of any given item they need to retrieve.

This news on the software is great news. One of the biggest griefs with general MMOG's are the cheaters, the money sellers and that events don't feel like they affect the world around you. Hopefully, with Bioware's amazing writing, this could be one hell of an immersive game.

to MKhavoc, the original star wars galaxies was awesome it had the best level tree i think in any game ever, it was a fantastic mmo, one of my favorites...until sony stepped in and messed it all up. so if bioware could make a similar game in the kotor star wars setting have a similar skill tree, but with some sweet bioware additions i think it would be awesome. and i believe bioware has enough respect that the big companies wouldnt charge in and demand huge change. in most games a lot of players will send mesages to the devs saying you know like this patch could be better by doing this... and just suffl ike that. sony generally has a record of saying you dont know anything about gaming and were the ones in charge here...so hopefully sony has nothing to do with this game and EA just lets bioware work their magic

While I guess this is good news, I must admit I'm a little disappointed. I don't relish the thought of playing this game with 20,000 kiddies. I absolutely loved the story of the KOTOR games along with the style of gameplay, and I'm sure this will all be lost in an MMORPG environment. I would have much preferred that KOTOR3 remain in the single-player RPG genre.

I dont care if its starwars, just make it an online MMO with the Bioware style, I actually would rather see a new futuristic IP kinda like Mass Effect but maybe further on in the future with a better story and motive. I just dont care that much if they got the KOTOR name or not, who cares? Its not like Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader would be in it, you just get a bunch of goofy ass star wars names and character types, and I think based on Mass Effect, Bioware can make even better characters and story than Star wars.

I have a feeling this might be a Neverwinter Nights MMORPG. I'm basing that off of the BioWare site, when you look at what they require for their artists (whome they're hiring for) in their "MMO Project" they have a downloadable sample of Neverwinter Nights arts, saying "This is the style, and quality we are looking for." Obviously that doesn't mean ANYTHING, so don't jump down my throat over it. It could just as well be a Mass Effect, or Jade Empire MMO for all I know. Its just that they say they're looking for the STYLE of the Neverwinter Nights stuff, that makes me think. For what its worth though.. I hope its a Mass Effect MMO.

it being BioWare (and such a big project, with really big words right from the beginning) you know it's gonna be great. I'm expecting Sci-Fi, not Fantasy to be the genre.

Hopefully there will be a huge fiber optic market by then. This way everything can be on a larger scale than current MMOs. And there are not as many MMOs as people think. We just hear about more in development but not released yet.

god dang it people it's not KOTOR because if it is im gonna scream... what they need to do is make KOTOR 3 using the mass efect engine, having jade empire syle fighting...because that turn based crap sucks, next they need to forget they even made a second one because it was horrible, and they should put in a thing where it recognises if u played KOTOR 1-2 that way it would already have your story and powers, then they should make the world revole around what u do like in fable where u can kill anybody and it affects ho others look at u,they should let u be able to go from land to space seamlessly ( or at least on the next battle front!), then to end it let this lead up to the clone wars era if it doesn't let u start from the reven/malak era! that would be a perfect game!

That's all fine and dandy, but i'm more concerned with when I'll get my hands on Mass Effect. Hell, give me the next KOTOR and I'm set.
