Black Ops 4 Is 2018's New Call Of Duty; Early Release Date Set

Black Ops 4 is real, and it releases in October.

118 Comments

Following a great deal of speculation and apparent confirmation that 2018's Call of Duty entry would be a new Black Ops game, Activision has made it official. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is in development and will be released later this year --though it'll be out sooner than we're accustomed to.

Black Ops 4 is headed to PS4, Xbox One, and PC; there's no word on a Switch version, as some had hoped. It will be released on Friday, October 12, almost a full month sooner than the early November release window that new Call of Duty games typically occupy. As previously confirmed, this year's game is being developed by Treyarch, the studio responsible for the entire Black Ops series.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 Officially Confirmed, Release Date Earlier Than Usual

Unfortunately, beyond those basic details, Activision hasn't shared anything further about the game. Instead, a special event will be hosted on May 17 where Activision will reveal the game publicly. It's unclear if we'll get any other official details prior to that date. It looks as if the PC version may use Blizzard's Battle.net.

It was reported earlier this year that 2018's game would be Black Ops 4. Activision rotates between Call of Duty studios on a three-year cycle, and given the sub-series' popularity and the fact that 2018 marks three years since the previous Black Ops game's launch, the news made sense. Subsequently, NBA star James Harden was recently spotted wearing a hat that appeared to feature a modified version of the Black Ops III logo, only with four symbols (roman numerals be damned). That logo turned out to be real, as you can see above. Black Ops 3, meanwhile, received a surprise update with new content, leading some to wonder if it was meant to tease the possibility of a sequel.

We'll report back as Activision shares more details on Black Ops 4. In the meantime, let us know what you hope to see from it in the comments below.

They are trying to stay far away from Red Dead Redemption 2 which releases October 26th.

@gamingdevil800: Actually, they are trying to stay in front of the release of RDR2, so it is not to interfere with potential sales. Instead they are hoping to steal some of Rockstars thunder... Good luck Activision. I dont care how successful BOps4 may be, it won't hold a candle to RDR2... No matter when they release.

Octobers game money is already reserved for RDR2, Sorry Activision... Fool me once...

@StormShadowNF: If this was Call Of Duty Ghosts I would agree with you but wtf are you talking about the last few COD's have all looked really good in terms of graphics. They ain't going for photo realism if that's what you are expecting.

Activision probably pushed the CoD release date up a few weeks because they got tired of EA putting out Battlefield/Battlefront games a week or two before the CoD games.

That also shows that Activision is anticipating a DICE/Respawn shooter from EA this year. More Battlefield WWII likelihood.

@tuxedocruise: I was going to ask if anyone had an idea why October and not November. This seems like as good a reason as any except Activision doesn't seem to fear anybody when it comes to Call of Duty's release date.

@Attitude2000:

"I was going to ask if anyone had an idea why October and not November. This seems like as good a reason as any except Activision doesn't seem to fear anybody when it comes to Call of Duty's release date."

Activision doesn't fear losing the CoD franchise yet, it's still a strong multi-million seller on an annual basis. At this point, it won't be another game that kills CoD, CoD will kill itself.

But that doesn't mean Acitivision doesn't see EA as a threat. EA has been directly challenging the CoD franchise since John Riccitiello squared Battlefield 2 against the CoD franchise, and EA releasing their AAA shooters a week or two before a CoD game every since.

EA has thrown more than just the Batttlefield franchise at CoD. But when that wasn't enough, they rebooted the Medal of Honor franchise as an infantry-only competitive shooter that wanted to take the shooter crowd away from CoD. 2 games later and Medal of Honor was canned again. When CoD was having one of its weaker years with Infinite Warfare, EA released Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2 1-2 weeks right before the launch of Infinite Warfare. CoD still sold millions that year, but the quality of that entry tied with consumers having 2 AAA competitive shooters before CoD that year definitely ate into some of Activision's sales.

Should Activision fear losing the CoD franchise to EA's franchises? Probably not. But that doesn't mean EA isn't spending millions to try to take that audience away from Activision, and that's something Activision is mindful of.

@gamingdevil800:

"Nah Red Dead Redemption 2 is the real threat."

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a threat just as much as any other AAA game is a threat. During that time for holiday shopping, the competition is always fierce every year. That's the only audience similarity that Black Ops 4 and Red Dead Redemption 2 has: they're both AAA games.

A large portion of people who will buy Red Dead Redemption 2 won't buy Black Ops 4. Even taking the samples in the GameSpot comments section, a lot of people who are picking up Red Dead Redemption 2 aren't getting Black Ops 4 when they launch. People have already made up their minds on this before Black Ops 4 was announced, so it's not exactly the same core audience.

Activision faces much more competition on an almost yearly basis from EA than they do from Rockstar. Activision also isn't very worried about losing their competitive shooter audience to a single player focused game in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Will Red Dead Redemption 2 eat into some of the sales of Black Ops 4? Sure, but not enough for it make a major impact on Black Ops 4 sales. And the impact of Red Dead Redemption 2 won't make competitive shooter fans not buy Black Ops 4 or the CoD franchise in general.

EA stands a much bigger threat. EA has publicly challenged Activision on sales of their shooter franchises almost annually. EA tried it with the Medal of Honor reboot that released before CoD, then they tossed out Titanfall 2 to die a week after launching Battlefield 1; all 1-2 weeks before CoD: Infinite Warfare. EA has literally thrown millions of dollars to directly dethrown CoD and take away their core shooter audience.

cod sales have been on the decline for years... no wonder they moved the date up to avoid the heavy hitters in november (although i'm not sure what else is coming out this year). also, activision does not want to release the game after red dead 2 so everyone will stay clear of the two-three weeks following its release.

They pushed the date up because they're loosing money from Destiny. It's no surprise. And it will be no surprise when mostly everybody pays for a "rinse and repeat." Activision needs to respect development of "original quality" more than the money they see in the back of their head. Think outside the box, when I mean original quality...I'm not talking about the Space suite or Spaceship we've never seen before. I'm talking about innovation, like full blown "physical environment destruction" as an example.

What do they do instead? Copy paste core engine mechanics, rinse and repeat textures, physics, character animations, and BAD netcode...Yeah no thank you.

@wrestlingdude: I would love for full environmental destruction, especially if things fall apart randomly which change the features match to match in that board
