World of Warcraft developer Blizzard Entertainment has canceled its next-generation MMO, Titan. Mike Morhaime, the co-founder and president of Blizzard, confirmed the game's cancellation today.

"We had created World of Warcraft, and we felt really confident that we knew how to make MMOs," Morhaime told Polygon. "So we set out to make the most ambitious thing that you could possibly imagine. And it didn't come together."

"We didn't find the fun," Morhaime added. "We didn't find the passion. We talked about how we put it through a reevaluation period, and actually, what we reevaluated is whether that's the game we really wanted to be making. The answer is no."

"It was hard when we canceled Warcraft Adventures. It was hard when we canceled StarCraft Ghost. But it has always resulted in better-quality work" -- Morhaime

Titan has been in development for years, though Blizzard has never actually announced the game in an official capacity. Despite that, the company confirmed in December 2010 that it was indeed called Titan, though this was believed to only be a working title.

The game's official cancellation today comes after Blizzard removed all mention of the game from its careers page back in August 2013, suggesting the company was moving away from the project.

Blizzard senior vice president of story and franchise development, Chris Metzen, said the decision to cancel Titan was "excruciating." Morhaime agreed that shutting down development on the game was a "really, really" hard decision to make. However, he says he's made these decisions before, and the end result is always positive.

"It was hard when we canceled Warcraft Adventures. It was hard when we canceled StarCraft Ghost," he said. "But it has always resulted in better-quality work."

Metzen added: "The discipline of knowing when to quit is important. We were losing perspective and getting lost in the weeds a little. We had to allow ourselves to take that step back and reassess why the hell we were doing that thing in the first place."

Though Titan is canceled, Morhaime said Blizzard hasn't closed the door entirely on making another MMO someday. "I wouldn't say no to ever doing an MMO again," Morhaime said. "But I can say that right now, that's not where we want to be spending our time."

Blizzard will continue to support World of Warcraft, of course, which is now in its tenth year of continued operation. "My hope personally is that we'll support it forever," Metzen said.

At the end of May 2013, Blizzard confirmed that Titan was undergoing "large design and technology changes." Later that summer, Morhaime said during an Activision Blizzard earnings call that Titan may not be subscription-based, or even an MMO.

"We're in the process of selecting a new direction for the project and re-envisioning what we want the game to be," Morhaime said at the time. "While we can't talk about the details yet, it is unlikely to be a subscription-based MMORPG."

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA.

BAH HA HA no seriously.

So, all that money we spent for 11 years on WoW, giving them millions upon billions of dollars, went towards what? Developing SC2 and D3 both of which have now been 15+ year processes?

Just lol.

Also btw, Blizzard North undoubtedly made a better D3 than the trash which was released. Considering, you know, they made the entire Diablo franchise.

Not to mention. Diablo 3 wasn't fun. If you thought it was fun, you're braindead.

@grenadehh Did you see the images of Diablo 3, before the other abomination released? It looked much more faithful to what Diablo was, even though the first game still had a much more dark feeling.

And you're surprised? If Blizzard was willing to cancel the original Diablo 3 by Blizzard North because it wasn't fun, and subsequently eliminate the entire Blizzard North, I don't see how the cancellation of an unannounced project like Titan can be seemingly unexpected.

HotS didn't live up to the standards of WoL. The whole game was about Kerrigan bitching about Jim's 'death'. And I'm sure like everyone else, you predicted Jim wasn't really dead from the very beginning of the game. If that isn't poor storytelling, I don't know what is.

I'll say that there was a time when it wasn't unreasonable to expect that much from Blizzard. Times have changed.

Would be nice to see some of the concept work they had created. Be worth a look I'd say to see what they had in mind originally.

Good to know they won't just shovel something out to the customer though if they aren't feeling it.

We get enough cr@p shoveled out from big studios. As disappointing as this might be for some, I appreciate that this was a tough decision for them to abandon it and it was probably all for the best if they weren't "feelin' it"

I think Blizzard almost owes it to Warcraft fans to release a Warcraft 4 already. Beyond that, having this new IP not be an MMO is a good move, and they could work on a more modern sequel to WOW or something.

@Ovirew Meh. True Warcraft fans relinquished all hope for a Warcraft game 10 years ago. WoW was a good game, at times, but in terms of lore, in terms of being a Warcraft game, it was utterly terrible.
The storyline changes are irreparable and there's nothing that can happen in a WC4 except a Fourth War wherein all the old characters are now dead and it's just completely stupid. There's no way back for WC, it's done.

My guess is that Blizzard was taking WAY too long developing this MMO and the initial design of the game was becoming obsolete with all the changes to the gaming industry. Think about it, since they announced development of the game in 2007 we've seen an increase in microtransactions, DLC replacing expansions, free-to-play games, Twitch streaming and social media, and the eSports scene blowing up. There are so many new things they need to consider now.

Of course their biggest obstacle is dealing with the MMO scene. For the last 10 years there has only been 1 MMO that's dominated the market and it's bringing in a billion dollars in revenue per year. The rest of the MMO scene has been pushing free-to-play models with no subscription to play online and some developers even release the game for free and rely on micro-transactions to get by. Most new MMOs are trying to get rid of all the grinding in PvE as well which is

like 80% of a typical WoW player's game activity. How do they make money with another MMO under these circumstances? How the hell do you re-invent the wheel here? How do you develop a game for 7-8 years and not have it play like a last-gen game by the time it comes out?

I respect that they decided not to release this game. A few well-known WoW designers that helped make the game quit the WoW team years ago to work on Titan and I know they tried hard, but it's a b**** to create another Game-of-the-Year quality MMO these days.

<< LINK REMOVED >> A 10-year-old MMO that's STILL out-pacing every other MMO that has come up against it over the past decade. Love it or hate it, people are still playing the hell out of it. Blizzard is still making a gravy train of cash from WoW alone.

Yeah, they're really going in a downward spiral. I expected Guild Wars 2, The Old Republic, and even The Elder Scrolls Online to dethrone it. None of them even came close. And Guild Wars 2 is amazing!

<< LINK REMOVED >> I put 200 hours into D3 vanilla before the item grind was awful, Reaper of Souls is FANTASTIC. It literally is better than any action RPG every made. It's better in every single way besides story and atmophere of the old Diablos. If you don't think it's better you're just a blind nostalgia boy who's old memories can't every be topped, no matter what blizzard does.

Just like the Burning Crusade/Lich King fanboys who act like WoW hasn't improved. Just because it isn't groundbreaking, does not mean it's not an improvement. Have YOU spent adequate time on Diablo Reaper of Souls to make that judgement? Or are you just a hipster who loves to hate on new things and claim how the old one "just got it right" for some reason?

The MMO genre needs a shake up, something different.

People are getting tried of playing the same basic game in every-single mmo, gear grinding, chasing quest from zone to zone which most people find mind numblingly boring now since the quality/presentation of the quest are so bare bones (really how many ways can you write a quest to go collect "x" amount of items?

The stories/quests in mmo's don't hold a candle next to great single player story-focused rpgs like Dragon age, Mass Effect, Baldur's Gate, Planescape Torment, etc. Mainly because there's just no quality behind them because the nature of the gameplay dictates you need soooooooo many quests and writers get burnt out and stretched thin , just padding out generic storylines over and over.

Then you have the fact that they keep trying to stuff mmo's into a generic "You are the ONE/Chosen/Hero/Savior of the entire world, meanwhile you see 100's of other players doing the EXACT same thing, same quest, and it completely and utterly takes away any and all importance you felt as a character. IT's like they can't let an mmo accept it's an mmo with many other players and build a story around this where you aren't the "Chosen one" and instead drop you into a world where you, the player, make your own way/story (like old Sandbox mmo's).

Then there's the gameplay, recently some mmo's have tried to make it more fun, but they still want to keep one foot in the old tired and busted "tab-target/hotkey" focused gameplay. Tera was about the best at getting away from it but it still holds nothing next to aoctual action-adventur egames (Severance, Rune, Mount and Blade, etc).

It just still amazes me, that when we had the first big generation of mmo's, Ultima Online, Everquest, and Asheron's Call, all of them were quite different from each other in terms of game design. Now these days all the big AAA mmo's are largely the same, Built off the WoW type of gameplay (which was largely built on EQ's formula).

It's like the entire mmo genre is littered with sooooooooo many mmo's that have tried to go after this same gameplay and have failed or had to go f2p and yet no mmo developer outside of small indie ones (Which have not nearly enough of a budget or marketing to get out there and compete against the big ones) even seem to want to try to buck this trend or do something new/different.
