Blizzard Pokes Fun At Star Wars Battlefront 2 On Twitter

Burn.

Blizzard today announced that its RTS StarCraft II is now free-to-play on PC, and one part of the reveal involved poking fun at EA's Star Wars: Battlefront II. Specifically, Blizzard released a series of tweets in which it mentioned that none of its content is locked behind playtime barriers. Battlefront II has been in the middle of controversy regarding how long it takes to unlock some characters, while the game is also facing criticism that it's bordering on a pay-to-win scenario.

Blizzard didn't skip a beat, leveraging this for its own benefit. Below is a screencap of the three tweets in question. Sick burn.

No Caption Provided

Battlefront II was criticised for, among other things, how long it takes to unlock heroes in multiplayer such as Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. In response to this, EA reduced the number of credits you need to unlock those characters by a whopping 75 percent.

EA has said it is constantly listening to fan feedback and will make changes to Battlefront II as needed going forward. CFO Blake Jorgensen commented on the controversy this week, saying fans should be patient as DICE considers feedback.

StarCraft II's switch to free-to-play was announced at BlizzCon earlier this month, but the conversion officially happened today. New players who are getting into StarCraft II for the first time will be able to play through the entire Wings of Liberty campaign for free. All of the current and upcoming co-op commanders are also free to play up to level five, while Raynor, Kerrigan, and Artanis will remain free to level up as much as you want.

You can read more about the business model switch here in GameSpot's previous coverage. We also spoke with StarCraft production director Tim Morten about how this update will affect the player base.

@SythisTaru: Sure, but wasn't the campaign in each part about the size of the entire campaign for StarCraft 1? Also, which each part $60 at launch? I thought the Zerg and Protoss parts were expansions that were like $45 or something.

@SythisTaru: 3 games with 3 different campaign... Altho they are one big story. You don't need to pay to get a chance to loot for a Marine... I can understand there are cost to developing games, but I can't stand you have to pay to win a game that you've already paid for.

that's ironic in the typical blizzard fashion when you take a look at the billions of dollars that company earns and yet they make paid boxes in a game that is not free to play like overwatch, feels like they just want to wear the goodie goodie hat, but in the end they are as greedy as EA

@Fia1: U can get the boxes fairly regularly by playing. and those contain only skins and sprays anyway nothing that changes the gameplay in any way.

@koospetoors: of course it does. The fact that no one is holding a knife against you forcing you to pay to make yourself look unique in the game already differ it from EA. It's your choice to try to make yourself look cooler in overwatch but it's a different story if you have to pay to have a chance to play as a certain character, or have a better shield than someone. I'm ok with loot boxes really as long as the loot boxes doesn't affect gameplay, since then I would be able to win with skills and effort instead of throwing my wallet at ppl until they die. The philosophy of what makes a game fun is taken away if you just throw cash at people. But I also can't stand people that feel they are entitled to everything else that developers creates for the game after it's release for free. I too am a developer, just not a game developer. I can understand why company charge for expansion packs and dlc but those at lease you pay to get content that you know you paid for instead of spending on a gamble for an equipment or something that doesn't guarantee to be what you want.

Didn't all of the extra commanders in SC2 only become accessible with $4.99 in real cash?

Not defending EA, but wasn't Starcraft 2 split into 3 games where you could only use one faction per expansion?

@DsPsofLife: As I recall, you had access to all three factions for multiplayer right from the jump, but the initial game only had the Terrain campaign. That said, I believe the mission count for each of the three campaigns was nearly as high as all three of the original StarCraft campaigns combined. So I don't think StarCraft 2 actually ripped anybody off on content, I think it just told a story that basically took two sequels to finish.

"number of hours before you can play any co-op commander = 0"... maybe I'm wrong, but I think you only get to demo most of them, and then you have to pay to keep em (with no way of earning in game). Seems worse than Bf2's deal to me...

Let's not forget this is the company that brought you Diablo 3 v1.0 (aka, the game who's endgame was designed around people selling each other items [and maybe Bliz even created/sold some themselves] for significant amounts of real cash that Bliz of course took a hefty cut of).

And WoW sells its own gold (and manipulates the market to accommodate it). And WoW time gates 6 hours worth of content over several months...

And then there's Hearthstone (period).

etc, etc, etc.

They're both scum, but I'd argue Bliz is actually worse.

Uh, no... but you have a point, they do time gate the raids sometimes too don't they (especially if you're into LFR).

@ahpuck: How they handle their business dealings, ok... EA is pretty much the devil and I don't know why anyone works with them. But to the consumer, I dunno, I find Blizzard's practices a bit scummier. They put no effort into their moneygrubbing schemes, they just print money whenever they feel like it.

@Pyrosa: I suppose, but I'd rather be able to earn it in game and not have to pay for it at all... which isn't an option in SC2.

I think it's quite brave of Activision-Blizzard to be playing the "Aren't we so good" card considering their recent patent filings and the crap they're pulling with loot boxes in the new COD.

@AnakinSW: Even though its just cosmetics and, ugh, "optional" stuff. Its the only unlockable stuff in the game one can progress towards and huge fundamental parts from the leveling to in-game currency is one way or another centered around getting cosmetics. And whats the best way to get cosmetics? With lootboxes. And whats the best way to get lootboxes? By buying them in bulk because the ways to earn them are intentionally slow.

Starting to see the problem? Yeah I can just not buy lootboxes and ignore and play without yadda yadda but then I'm cutting off a huge part of the game which is character customization. You can't tell me you don't like it when you get a cool rare skin to equip.

“Bordering on a pay-to-win scenario”.

Umm no, the loot box system is explicitly pay to win. Might want to change this line.

But Starcraft 2's story is divided into 3 parts. You only get the first part for free, and then you need to buy the expansions to continue. With Battlefront 2, the single player story is 100% there, with no future DLC needed to complete it.

@xantufrog: I mean, you say that, but Hearthstone, Overwatch, and WoW are all still crazy popular. They're still supporting StarCraft 2 and Diablo III. That might not be special to you, but they're certainly successful. That probably gives them some credit to poke fun at other developers.

Kind of funny blizzard tried to do it when their hearthstone maintenance cost can cost upwards like over $500 per year and overwatch loot box revenues causes dev to try to imitate the profits (and in some cases like battlefront 2, made it worst)

I don't really understand why Blizz is talking shit when the cost to actually enjoy hearthstone is at least 10 packs from each xpac and then crafting staples which costs dust which costs more packs cuz dust generates from duplicates.
