Blizzard's next MMOG already playable

COO Paul Sams confirms that the World of Warcraft-maker's next big project, code-named Titan, has reached an advanced stage of development.

Last year, Blizzard Entertainment cofounder Frank Pearce confirmed that his company's new massively multiplayer online game was code-named "Titan" as had been indicated by a purportedly leaked Blizzard release schedule. That schedule had the game arriving in the fourth quarter of 2013--over two years away.

No Caption Provided

However, just because the game may be so far off doesn't mean that it still isn't coming together. Speaking with industry site Gamasutra, Blizzard COO Paul Sams said that the MMOG--which he did not reference by its code name--is already playable.

"We're playing it already. It is a total ball to play," he said. "We think that the reach of that product is greater than anything that we've done before. We're very excited about that. I believe that it's the type of game that will have a very long life, much like World of Warcraft has."

Sams went on to say that Blizzard hopes the new MMOG--rumored to have a first-person perspective--will eventually outgrow World of Warcraft, which he still believes has many more years in it. "The thing that we hope will happen is that it will not stop World of Warcraft, but we believe will eclipse it," he said, before adding, "So, hopefully in 10, 15 and 20 years, that [new MMOG] will still be growing strong and will have set a new mark in the industry for that type of product."

The past several years have seen a steady drip of information about Blizzard's next MMOG. In 2007, the company confirmed that a non-World of Warcraft MMOG was in development. In 2009, the company admitted the game was an all-new property with, according to Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, "a little more broad appeal."

Wouldn't it be interesting if the last expansion of WOW took the level cap to 100...and when a player's character got to 100, it would die! GAME OVER: YOU WON! PLAY TITAN, NOW! I'd feel bad for my Orc Hunter. Sniff.

First person MMOG? Sounds very interesting, but my purchase would definitely depend on how it's implemented.

@ AuronAXE Nothing good in the past few years? Not sure what means considering they've made popular, successful and critically successful games like: - Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1 and 2 - Blur - Singularity - A number of Spider Man games - Prototype - Golden Eye 007 remake That doesn't even take into account Activision's role in the Total War series and it's ties to Blizzard, Bungie, LucasArts and Valve, so go ahead, say they don't publish great games, but I think there's more then enough proof on the contrary.

@maxwellsdemon13 Sir, I'm simply not a fan of corporations ruling over money like giants. I enjoy my consoles, I enjoy my games. But Activision, they've done NOTHING good in the past few years. After CoD4 and GHIII they have turned into greedy bastards. I know that now it's all for money, but economics are never fair. And so, I do my part in hating on the a**holes who deserve the hate. I'm looking at you, Robert Kotick.

Of course it's already playable. It's probably been very playable for awhile now. Of course, though, it will still take forever for them to release it. Fourth quater 2013? Not likely! Such is the way of Blizzard.

I wonder if it actually will be first-person... It might not be a bad idea if Blizzard does choose to do that, because a FP-perspective would set it and WoW well apart.

@AuronAXE What are you talking about, in early console days, the goal was the same, you don't think Sega, Nintendo, Sony and other early developers didn't seek to make popular titles that would sell? I think you are just living in nostalgia rather then any actual reference. Plus the fact that you think there are no "good" games goes to show how biased you are. I have yet to have any issue finding a good game on any console, the fact that most people are able to as well is evident in a growing gaming market, increased sales, among other things. Get over the past, because it's clearly not the way you remember it.

Quite a good strategy, keeping WoW running while it makes a lot of profit, the development of the new game can be financed by the ongoing profits. And when the majority of gamers are getting bored of WoW they throw out their new game which will be highly polished and a totally new experience. If it turns out good, they might be right, it has a chance of succeeding WoW

@Fossil "Fossil: I'm not really sure what your point is. Broader appeal means it's more likely to appeal to casual gamers, so elitism should be less of an issue. But you're wrong about WoW anyways. The game was ruined by Blizzard's attempt to pull in more subscriptions while ignoring their hardcore fanbase. The gap between elitists and casual players has shrunk enormously over the last 2 expansions." You just proved my point. Broad appeal means ignoring a core fanbase or level of play in order to up subscribers. More subscribers = more elitists filtering in and the game getting ruined by not only casuals not being skilled enough but their mistakes driving elitist jerk's nerd rage through the ceiling instead of their trying to help them improve. It's all a vicious circle. The instant gratification that comes from playing WoW also gives players the expectation of everything happening with ease, and when it doesn't the bullets start flying. Titan will be no different.

@maxwellsdemon13 Go back to the early consoles. Remember when dev's just released games so that they and others could enjoy them, and use money as a bonus? Those were golden days. Now, this corporate garbage is the cancer to gaming. It's sad, since we can't do anything about it but support our favorite companies. Which is partly why I haven't played a good new game in a long time.

@AuronAXE Then don't, but don't whining and complaining when other do. Companies that care about just gaming and ignore mass appeal go out of business.

@crispy2226 - The new Blizzard MMO is confirmed to be a new IP (Intellectual Property), but nothing official on whether it is a sci-fi shooter, only rumors to that effect. << LINK REMOVED >>

Just wondering if they'll make it or some variation available to next gen consoles. That alone would tell us what Sony and MS are doing in that area.

@spector000 I beg to differ my friend. There are hordes of players who have been playing wow for the hours and hours you describe and are DYING to ditch it because of the poor quality they are making it into. And the 2 things that make an mmo GREAT are end game content and pvp balance. which blizzard has mastered and thats why no one can compare to it.

Spector, I don't think its the amount of hours. Sure while it isnt fun to haft to redo those. Most people who played WoW for long periods had several of the highest lvl characters at the time. lvling isnt the difficult part. I feel the reason WoW is still so strong is there hasn't been a good enough mmo to challenge it. If something better came out. I see no reason not to switch over

It's probably some sort of First Person MMO, but not necessarily a SHOOTER like everyone thinks it is. I'm thinking a cross between Shenmue and The Sims - a modern game that puts you into a virtual world where you do....stuff? Who knows. If it's another stupid High Fantasy MMO, I'm not wasting my time. And Hellgate: London tried the FPSMMO thing and failed miserably. I would not try again to be honest.

I'm going to engage my litte-used cynicism mode here. Firstly, it's no suprise Titan is already playable, given the way Blizzard develops- ie, get it running, then iterate the hell out of it until it's ready to release. Now for the cynicism. I make two predictions- one, that if anyone in the next two years releases an MMOG with a revolutionary idea in it, Blizzard will work something similar into Titan. Two, that if, in a year or so's time a new MMOG starts generating a pre-release buzz (eg, Dark Millenium), Blizzard will suddenly start 'coincidentally' leaking details of Titan and talking about migration benefits for existing WoW players moving on to it.

It'd be playable: It'll take two years to refine mechanics, add content, high-resolution textures, test between platforms (is it multi-platform?), make sure it's scalable, prepare servers, marketing campaigns, run it through legal... Making an MMO with any potential for longevity - especially in the terms they're talking - is going to have a long development process.

What's wrong appealing to a broader audience? Obviously, making a game so simple that a 5-year veteran can be outclassed by a 6-month newb is just idiocy. But with the case of successful new games that have been simplified from its predecessor in order to "appeal to a broader audience", such as Starcraft II and Street Fighter IV (and to an extent Halo Reach), you can't judge it until it comes out.

@dj-lethal : Not that optimistic. WoW's already been out for nearly 7 years and its population is growing, not shrinking. Sure people clear the content and take breaks, but with major patches or expansions they all come back and bring more people with them. With at least 2 major expansions still coming out for WoW, 10 years is certainly not a stretch of the imagination, nor is 15. So imagine what sort of appeal their new game could have? With WoW they tried to do a re-vamp by introducing new classes and basically altering the entire world and leveling experience. To a certain degree it worked, but there's still only so much you can do with a universe that's been so firmly established. With their new game they'll have learned from this and make it even more open ended, more interactive and innovative quests, a complex PvP system, etc. WoW has shown not only persistence and endurance, but popularity and a staggering ability to make money. And then you have Diablo 2, which came out over 10 years ago and still has a strong following, and of course Starcraft, which is getting close to its 15 year anniversary. Blizzard makes games that last. Whether you agree with their business model or not, it's hard to deny that at least.

@Morf_uni pffft whatever dude , wow is easily one if not the best game ever made , a game that can captivate that many millions of people for that many years straight is an achievement that not one single company in the history videogames has ever achieved. they didnt just achieve that because there game is fun , they did it because yes it innovated and yes it took ideas from others but it took them and turned them into gold , they know gamers because they are gamers and no one is gonna take down blizzard for a very long time . i quit wow after 4 years and i still have yet to find a single game that offers what that game has to offer , its brilliant and there is a ton of heart in it that you obviously dont see. bring on the next mmo blizzard i know im excited as hell
