Blizzard's next MMOG already playable

COO Paul Sams confirms that the World of Warcraft-maker's next big project, code-named Titan, has reached an advanced stage of development.

Last year, Blizzard Entertainment cofounder Frank Pearce confirmed that his company's new massively multiplayer online game was code-named "Titan" as had been indicated by a purportedly leaked Blizzard release schedule. That schedule had the game arriving in the fourth quarter of 2013--over two years away.

No Caption Provided

However, just because the game may be so far off doesn't mean that it still isn't coming together. Speaking with industry site Gamasutra, Blizzard COO Paul Sams said that the MMOG--which he did not reference by its code name--is already playable.

"We're playing it already. It is a total ball to play," he said. "We think that the reach of that product is greater than anything that we've done before. We're very excited about that. I believe that it's the type of game that will have a very long life, much like World of Warcraft has."

Sams went on to say that Blizzard hopes the new MMOG--rumored to have a first-person perspective--will eventually outgrow World of Warcraft, which he still believes has many more years in it. "The thing that we hope will happen is that it will not stop World of Warcraft, but we believe will eclipse it," he said, before adding, "So, hopefully in 10, 15 and 20 years, that [new MMOG] will still be growing strong and will have set a new mark in the industry for that type of product."

The past several years have seen a steady drip of information about Blizzard's next MMOG. In 2007, the company confirmed that a non-World of Warcraft MMOG was in development. In 2009, the company admitted the game was an all-new property with, according to Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, "a little more broad appeal."

Ok, first thing, did anyone else read the part about Kotick being involved in this? For those of you who don't know, Bobby Kotick has probably never played a video game in his life and he sues people for the exhilaration of being in a courtroom. All I have to say secondly is that the recommendations on this game through this article have not been made by anyone in development. A COO has nothing to do with the game, his/her job is to market the product for maximum profitability. After all, in any corporation the goal is to best last years numbers, of which Blizzard is doing terribly well so its a high standard to break. It's a desperate market for those who fear competition, and desperation is a stinky cologne.

@_el_Greco_ Blizzard needs to asses the gaming industry from outside their WOW fort? Blizzard was a successful and respected gaming company long before WOW came out. They've done nothing but release quality game after game. The fact that your calling their words marketing lets me know how little you actually know about the company. They will continue to release little to nothing about this game for as long as they can it's their style. They've always been very quiet about games they are releasing.

broad appeal kills everything cuz a single game can't be everything to everyone, cuz if it is, it's just average cuz it doesn't do anything spectucular cuz it tries to do too much. So they need to identify a target audience and correlating genre, and focus solely on that, with maybe a little influence from outside genres. That would produce the best - quality game in my opinion. Just sayin.

This is just hype. Every MMO has an article like this. I won't make any judgement until they actually show me something.

More doing, less talking please... Until we get to actually see something these are just empty words... Marketing... Yeah, I also agree with those that found that "20 years" thing more like wishful thinking or ridiculous boasting... What are they gonna do? Lace the game with ketamine and have people play it till they die? I greatly respect Blizzard's history and love them still, but sometimes I feel like they need to stop living in a bubble and truly asses the game industry from outside their WoW fort.

You mean an MMOG thats even more dumbed down and easier to play than WoW? Did they buy the rights to make a 3D first person multi-player version of Farmville or something?

@dj_vader_69 You do know that Blizzard has several departments, right? 4 in total; Diablo, Starcraft, Warcraft and Titan. This news is coming from the Titan department, while the Diablo department is continuing to work on D3, so it's not like ones getting delay cause of the other.

"Broad appeal" probably means no subscription fees. Howerver, I'm sure they are spoiled by all the cash Wow has generated, so they'll try to implement some sort of money grabbing scheme in it.

What the hell blizzard? You tell us we can't play it for another 3-4 years then practically kick us in the balls by saying it's practically finished. Dear god, I'm almost starting to miss when they would just say "screw you, it's ready when it's ready."

Hmm, well, as long as it's not another fantasy based game, I am willing to give it a try. Blizzard really needs to make a sci-fi MMO. They also need to make it where the combat is active. If it's in first person, then there should be active aim, full player control, etc. This trend of auto attacking and putting all the strategy into spell casting and abilities over physical gameplay needs to stop. But, I will wait to see more before I make a judgement call.

"So, hopefully in 10, 15 and 20 years, that [new MMOG] will still be growing strong and will have set a new mark in the industry for that type of product." fk really, 10 to 20 years? with the way technology is growing so fast it must be damn good that blizzard thinks it can last that long. God, im thinking in 20 years time ill be um...omg in my 40s! HAHA and be still playing that game? Kind of hard to actually imagine that actually. Well looking forward to it anyway - must be something totally revolutionary to go that far. Either way, give me a good sci-fi that will last that long and i will play it till i die ;D.

Please for the love of God don't let it be an MMOFPS Call of Duty clone (at least make it the game that Huxley was supposed to be ^-^). I know it's Blizzard and they're awesome and they have a lot of autonomy compared to other Activision studios, but it still makes me nervous with good ol' Bobby Kotick stalking the hallways, looking to get his money-grubbing fingers into everything sacred. On a whimsical side note, I'd also love to see Blizzard reverse the bright, over-the-top, cartoony trend influencing Wow / Diablo 3 and try to slide back towards the dark, terrifying awesomeness that permeated Diablo 1. Pretty sure that's not going to happen though :(

I don't know about this hype building. No body knows what it is and there is a danger of people not liking it or be severely disappointed. That would be a pretty big fall for Blizzard. It is a pretty big gamble at this stage.

WoW might be the most popular MMO Hurvl but many people don't see how anyone in there right mind could enjoy a grind fest like WoW. They dont get the progression part of it. They see it as boring and pointless. I can see where people could dislike that style of play.. I grew up with the original FF and Dragon Warrior.. but most people grew up with Contra and Ninja Gaiden and Mario.
