Call of Duty franchise sales top $3 billion

Modern Warfare 2's $550 million opening helps boost Infinity Ward, Treyarch-developed FPS series' total global sales beyond 55 million units.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 smashed more than just game-industry records upon its launch for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in November. Generating some $550 million within its first five days on the market, the Infinity Ward-developed first-person shooter sailed past top earners within the film and book industry, giving Activision cause to lay claim to the title of "biggest entertainment launch in history."

Modern Warfare 2's sales likely got a boost on Black Friday.
Modern Warfare 2's sales likely got a boost on Black Friday.

Activision has now provided some perspective on just how big Call of Duty has become. Over the holiday weekend, the publisher announced that the Call of Duty franchise has pulled in more than $3 billion at retail worldwide, according to industry-tracking groups NPD, Chart-Track, and GfK, as well as Activision's own internal estimates. Beginning with 2003's acclaimed original, the series has sold more than 55 million units globally.

The Call of Duty franchise's achievement can largely be attributed to the three most recent installments in the series. In 2007, Infinity Ward rebooted the World War II-centric series it created with its contemporary-set Modern Warfare, a game that has now sold more than 14 million units. Activision's Treyarch studio returned to the WWII era with World at War in 2008, a game that used the same engine as Modern Warfare and achieved sales in excess of 11 million.

Activision has yet to provide an exact global sales figure in terms of units for Modern Warfare 2. However, the publisher did say that Infinity Ward's latest sold 4.7 million units within 24 hours in the US, UK, and Canada, earning some $310 million in the process. The game's prevalence has also been evidenced by its popularity with online networks, as Microsoft announced that it had achieved a new record of 2 million concurrent Xbox Live users following the game's launch.

Being a new Call of Duty fan, I have to say, I'm glad I'm a new fan, and eagerly await to see what COD7 holds.

I cant wait for COD7. I got my fingers crossed that it has bullet wounds and gore. If anything the Modern weapons from MW2 should have put holes in people but they didn't and that doesnt feel rigth to me. Guns=messy bodies and every shooter should have a realistic amount of mess. Flying lead especially when flying the speed it does out of any modern assualt rifle from MW2 should put a red mark or hole in anybodies head. Infinity Ward doesnt seem to get that.

This is a CoD thread. get out of here with that Halo garbage. Halo is so played out and lame. yay look at me jump around like a monkey with a shield on. Halo is for little kids. and no there won't be a Halo 4 they are just making weak spin offs and like ODST. thats Bungie trying to leech every last dollar they can get out of a good idea they had years ago.

@Anayalot408 What I meant was that it doesn't work in most cases, for example when you put up a :P mark, explain how does your comment stand out from being sarcasm or not? The :P could as well as mean you're being serious. I said real life, most people don't say LOL in real life, but I guess you already knew that.

@Anayalator408 As I said, sarcasm doesn't work online, whether you use an emoticon or not. :P It's not that I don't have any sense of humour, that just wasn't funny. and I think I'm better than everyone? That's what you're saying? Well congratulations, what a strong comeback, because that's not true at all, only by saying you got a bad sense of humour. Also please backup your claim on that, if you really think so. Emoticon like :P could mean you're serious, it's not an instant "sarcasm" -mark, for your information. Also, I believe I got a better sense of humour, seeing I actually make people laugh with my jokes in real life, now that you proved your point on yours. You can now talk to my hand, I'll ignore your bs from now on.

I can't help but laugh at some PS3 fanboys crying and feeling embarrassed because MW 2 made more sales than their PS3 exclusives. Deal with it. Better sales necessarily does NOT mean better game. But MW2 is one hell of a game even though it might not be as good as MW.

@SovietAgent Are you trying to say that Madden sold more copies than MW2? Because in reality Madden 10 sold 1.9 million units across 5, yes 5 platforms in its first month. While Madden 09 has sold 1.65 million units to date. Compared to MW2 on Xbox and PS3 selling 4.7 million in it's first 24 hours. Now I like some Madden but are you not reading any of the news stories on MW2 regarding "record breaking" sales and greatest media release of all time? I am pretty sure that in the entire span of Madden it has only sold more than 4.7 million units in a year, twice. And that was in 2005 and 06 because of the franchise's intro to Xbox. You also have to figure that if Madden leads it can't be by much even though they have been dropping titles ever year since 1993 while CoD just started in 2003. It's all good though some are not made for war!

Obviously we are trapped in the land of gamers and there is no escape. We have a wonderful game with a lot of cool cinema added in for effect. Yet we still have 12 year olds complaining that there are holes and fillers that do not appease. Welcome to modern warfare. Being a combat veteran, let me be the first to inform you that in real life you are constantly doing the same thing. Taking on missions with no insight and close to little intel. If you got briefed on everything you were going to do in a mission, then you could just send in the Coast Guard to fight terrorism.

Great game if you like a broken toy, they did a mess with the multiplayer and i can't even believe that management approved those changes on the game/multiplayer platform to make it that open to hacks. GJ IW GJ Activision you really impress me every year

MW2 should correctly be termed as MechWarrior 2 and not Modern Warfare. Frankly I don't think it's deserving of an acronym already in use. Especially by the MechWarrior franchise. Don't get me wrong either, I play ModWarfare online the most of my games, but give it a different acronym when a more important genre like MechWarrior is still out there.

@Cabal23 So you don't think Quake was anything special? Were you even around to play Doom?...Hexen? - that is what all FPS were like before Quake. If you can't see what Quake did for the FPS genre then you're crazy or just some kid who doesn't respect older games and I'm wasting my time. I've had this argument with people like you before but usually over Fallout 3/Oblivion (and how they're a step back, in no way revolutionary), not MW2 - cause most people accept what it is, a rehash.

MW2 was the biggest let down I have ever bought, I hate how many great reviews this game got, they didnt seem to mention the huge plot holes and the plot twists that destroyed the broken story even more, honestly you have no idea why your doing anything in any mission, your just told to do it, and any one who beat the game should feel robbed for the terrible ending that just gave a bad excuse for another sequel that is only worried about multiplayer, multiplayer is horribly unoriginal, absolutely no difference in gameplay besides the things that made it worse, the maps are boring and unoriginal, the guns dont feel like guns, play COD4 and listen and feel the difference, killstreaks clutter the gameplay and make it unenjoyable, most maps are concentrated into obvious chock-points and corridors that basically give you a match where you spawn, kill one or two enemies and then die to do it again until the match is over. the people that believe that mw2 is more tactical and less noobie are blind because you have the javelin glitch, you still have noob tubes, you have painkiller, the m16, the famas, the shotguns, you have to put up with shot recalls that would have saved the match if your bullets that you just shot didn't disappear out because you died first. I played COD4 this morning just so I could feel the possibilities that MW2 had and didnt take just to appeal to casual gamers. I dont know about everybody else but bad company 2 is going to mop the floor with iw

Tribes is THEEEEE game that changed the face of multiplayer FPS games. 1998 PC sensation. Dial-up was acceptable then. I miss the days of Tribes, which like MW2 was built with more so multiplayer in mind. I do however keep in mind that Unreal was released the same year and Quake the year before, and prior to Tribes but I enjoyed Tribes much more... anyone remember the Laser Rifle? Or building your own base with walls and turrets? Placing a turret in MW2 always reminds me of tribes.

@tehepicpwnzor are you kiding me?? Treyarch had nothing to do with modern warfare 2. Treyarch was involved in making COD3 and World at WAR. Both games have a superior campaign compared to MW2. Mw2 was good but not as good as it should have been. its only good for multiplayer whores

@ Tony382 Well lets see you got the initial planning stages, ideas coming in or being thrown out, storyboard, scripting, finding voice actors (I recognized some movie actors in this game lending their voices), art design, transferring art to graphic design stage, programming, designing maps, testing... This doesnt even factor in the business side of it all. How many resources, timeframe, budget, marketing, coming to business agreements with Sony and Microsoft... So yea I could see two years outta developing/planning this. I agree, not everything is perfect or even close to it, but I've seen some pretty BAD sequels and this isnt one of them

Was it just me, or was MW2's campaign a first person retelling of World in Conflict? The parachuting thing was EXACTLY like Red Dawn... And the .44 Magnum akimbo was like Texas Ranger all over again. I blame the bad campaign on Treyarch, which was more heavily involved in MW2 then MW1.

@Zeerus: I had the option of paying $50 to run it on my epic PC but have awful multiplayer, or buying it for PS3 for $60 and getting slightly lower graphics but better multiplayer. I went with the PS3 version, because I figured I would get a lot more fun out of playing with a better server system (I'm server 90% of the time thanks to my epic internet XD)

@tehepicpwnzor Xbox or PC? I can easily see that being done on CoD-lite (a.k.a Console versions of CoD) but I'd like to see someone try that on the PC on Vet. I'm sure there's people that CAN do it, but it's no where near as frivolous as the console.

It's a rare day when product sales figures track actual product quality. Kudos to Infinity Ward. Treyarch's still got some rep to earn, and now there's a third studio that'll have to prove its mettle, but Inifinity Ward has done an outstanding job delivering the FPS into the next generation. MW2 is a great value, even (especially!) for the PC. Stay frosty! :-)

After playing MW2, Halo 4 has a lot to live up to. A LOT!! Assuming they make a Halo 4. Come on Bungie, get a grip on it. You are not the premeire first person shooter on the 360 anymore. How does that make you feel? Bring on the chief! And make it better than this COD crap
