Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remaster On The Way, But Won't Have Multiplayer - Report

Unfortunate news for quick-scopers and riot-shielders.

Following Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare's remaster a couple of years ago, many fans thought that a Modern Warfare 2 remake would be right around the corner. Although nothing has yet to be officially announced, new reports suggest that a MW2 remaster is finally on the way.

First reported by Call of Duty enthusiast site CharlieIntel, then later independently confirmed by Eurogamer, the Modern Warfare 2 remaster is in development and will be significantly cheaper than Modern Warfare Remastered. Both Eurogamer and CharlieIntel assert that MW2 Remastered will cost around $25 / €20, while Modern Warfare Remastered costs $40.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remaster Reportedly On The Way, But Won't Have Multiplayer

The reports also assert that the game will not feature multiplayer, which is likely the reason for its lower price point. We do not yet know why Activision wouldn't include multiplayer; one completely speculative reason could be that the publisher hopes to avoid splitting the player base among too many different Call of Duty titles.

The game will apparently launch on April 30, well ahead of Black Ops 4's October release for PS4 and Xbox One. Neither Eurogamer nor CharlieIntel have reported whether or not it'll come to PC. Further, CharlieIntel stated that its sources said that Raven Software, which was responsible for Modern Warfare Remastered, is not working on Modern Warfare 2 Remastered.

Makes no sense, cod single players are famous for being blockbuster set pieces that last 5-8 hours at most then the rest of the game is MP so with no MP it's a very low value offering. D2 is currently in the toilet so that revenue stream was cut drastically, COD ww2 has done okay but hasn't exactly revitalized the series and everyone is on the lookout for overly aggressive monetization. Release it just purely as single player and you generate a small income bump and mostly negative coverage as people bemoan the lack of MP, release MP as an optional paid extra again you'll bump revenue but you'll generate a fecal storm of negative attention which could easily blow back on the COD franchise in general and harm revenue over the long term, or just release a straight remaster including MP at circa £20 and enjoy a nice extra payday and positive coverage leading into E3 and create hype around BLOPS 4.

“How would you suggest we did that? People couldn’t possibly hate us more”

Activision is the master of making a remaster far inferior and more expensive than the original version. Look for the rampant DLC to make your game complete announcing soon.

Not wanting to split the player base would not be in line with any of Activision's previous decisions. Activision's decisions are driven by: profit. Much more likely: they are releasing the single player, and later the multiplayer, as 2 separate entities. This way the campaign can fall in price while the multiplayer, which may need several dedicated servers (MW2 being identified by most as the best call of duty game), can remain at it's price point for likely some time. Many of the multiplayer players will have no interest in paying for the campaign (I know several personally), and will be more apt to buy it when priced for just the multiplayer, w/o additional content they have no interest in playing.

Why the hell would anyone buy CoD for single player? Lmfao, what are they doing??? MW2 was an amazing MP experience, I guess they're scared that people will once again ignore the new CoD just so that they can play the better one.

LOL what a no buy. Funny thing I still have the old entire MW collection sitting on the shelf. Can go through the campaigns any time I want. Having no multiplayer is just another Activision dick move and slap in the face to the fan base. MW2 and all it's multiplayer is easily one of the most requested Remasters of all time. To do one with out multiplayer is just a dick move to the dwindling fanbase.

Modern Warefare 2 multiplayer is by far literally the best COD multiplayer Infinity Ward has ever created. However the SP Campaign sucks compared to COD 4 MW. So this is just dumb and an easy past. F*** off Activision you're drunk.

What's the point? Who plays COD games for the sp, even more so if it's a several years old game? I wouldn't even pay $10 for that now. I might pay them a few bucks if mp was included and improved, especially the lag issues. But of course they'd be charging $40+ for that instead of the 20 or so bucks that it would be worth.

I'll just stick to MW2 on PC. The multiplayer is still alive there and at this point most modern laptops can run it without issues. No multiplayer means they might as well quit this project altogether and work on a Modern Warfare 4 already.

If it’s true they’ll probably make us pay for the multiplayer separately down the line and then also make us pay for the Map packs too. Oh boy and don’t forget cramming a F2P model into it too.

@ti22samurai: If there's no Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer in the remaster, you will quit all Call of Duty forever. Including the actual Modern Warfare 2, which has multiplayer, and this years new CoD, which also has multiplayer.

@Mogan: Yes! MW2 is a hackfest and WW II is straight up boring. I have been waiting for MW2R or BWC for a very long time. If it is not going to happen I'm done. I will switch to Fortnite and PUBG.

@Mogan: I was joking (like you couldn't tell) but is a good idea, and it would definitely sell more COD games. Especially since I have hated COD since BO2.

The only sales they get will be from people that assume the MP is included. As it should be. But it isn't.

I would also argue the many lawsuits and fight for control of toolsets related to the infinity ward vs Activision from a few years ago. Now that was a soap opera for sure.

Me and my crew just played the story mode of the MW titles just to familiarize ourselves with the controls and quickly moving on Multiplayer matches. Without MP, cannot see the value in a remake, unless it costs like $10 .

@icing: I imagine they don't want MW2's multiplayer, where there are no loot boxes, to pull players from Black Ops III's multiplayer, where there ARE loot boxes.

Smells to me that they are saving multiplayer for a future stanealone purchase (at some point) unfortunate because i enjoyed both the story and pvp and if there is to be a stanealone multiplayer, it too will likely be $25+, so if you buy single player and multiplayer (If there is one later) you will still end up shelling out $50+ for a decade old game, with a fresh coat of paint. Trust me, Activision will find a way to have their cake and eat it too...Again... and Again.

Just release it with Modern Warfare 3 campaign along to give us closure. Modern Warfare 2 was a stupid fun great campaign, but there's little incentive to get it when it's been the formula has been so repeated over and over (5 hour campaigns saturated of action with no understanding that low points make higher ones more special, AKA pacing).

Has anyone mentioned whether the "No Russian" mission would be included? After being used by & targeted from Anti-Game idiots so much, I doubt it would now...

But it is a BIG part of the story... So I don't think it should be cut as long as it has the offensive warning like the original did...
