Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 sets new launch records

Activision boasts latest military shooter sells 6.5 million units in US, UK within 24 hours; revenue tops $400 million.

Those who thought Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 couldn't top last year's Black Ops record-setting performance can think again. Today, Activision announced that it has again set a new high-water mark for its Call of Duty series, as Modern Warfare 3 sold more than 6.5 million units in the US and UK within its first 24 hours of availability.

Modern Warfare 3's day-one haul includes only two regions.
Modern Warfare 3's day-one haul includes only two regions.

Calling it the "biggest entertainment launch ever," Activision said that its latest first-person shooter generated more than $400 million in day-one revenue in the US and UK alone. That figure tops Black Ops' $360 million in 2010 and Modern Warfare 2's $310 million in 2009, both of which set launch records across all forms of entertainment.

"Other than Call of Duty, there has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records three years in a row," commented Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick. "Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise exceed worldwide theatrical box office for Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, two of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time."

Modern Warfare 3's arrival has also been a boon for Xbox Live. According to Activision, Microsoft posted a new record for most players using Xbox Live at one time following the launch of Modern Warfare 3.

Though analysts had been predicting Modern Warfare 3's multimillion-unit launch, the game's popularity apparently caught Activision off guard. Upon its launch on Monday, its new social platform Elite experienced significant instability due to heavy demand. As a make-good for that rocky launch, Activision is offering paid Elite subscribers an extra month free of charge.

Is there even a remote possibility of these numbers being fake ??? Given the hate surrounding Modern Warfare 3 (at least in the online gaming community), I'm still wondering as to how did this manage to sell 6.5 million units where Battlefield 3 "shipped" 5 million units !!!

@ IAm_PUFF_FearMe u know what? u and those who say like u are the only pro gamers here. But promise me something. Don't play COD if u already haven't finished it, and continuing it with playing MP. Beside thank u for insulting me.

@ mickey_mickey48 i never said that getting MW3 would be a bad thing. my thoughts were on wondering who was supposedly jumping on the bandwagon but all the while posing just to follow the crowd. please save the dramatic rebuttal's for system wars.

@Sigil-otaku Fair enough but I do not agree with you one bit. I don't think you can force anyone not to play a game they enjoy playing and play something else in the name of trying something different. You talk about other games being more innovative. Name one game that's an FPS that is in this category. Is it Homefront? Medal of Honor? Battlefield 3? I do not see any of these games as being innovative in any way...just as MW3 isn't innovative. So whereas you are right in the fact that companies try to mimic what is out there in order to sell more, that did not start with COD. MW was the first COD game I liked because it was innovative. They tried to be innovative and it worked for them. Assassins Creed tried to be innovative and it worked for them. The fact that companies try to play it safe is not the fault of COD or any of the COD gamers. There will always be companies that lead and those that follow. At the end of the day, if the product is good, it will sell..Minecraft, Infinity Blade and Limbo were the products of people who took risks. Personally, I prefer Battlefield 3's massive arenas with vehicles...but that does not mean that you should call COD players closed-minded. They buy the game because they enjoy playing it. I'm pretty sure if you looked in the home of a COD player, you'll see other video games that are not COD.

The beauty of freedom is the ability to earn a living and buy whatever you want. I swear everytme you read an article about COD...a vocal group of bitter people has to tell everyone over and over and over about how they hate COD. Get a life and go enjoy whatever game you like and let me enjoy the games I like. I bought COD 3 and BF3 and guess what...I enjoy both for what they offer. Video games are meant for entertainment and some folks act like we are discussing politics or religion. At least try the game out before you bash it or else you sound like the fool who tries to review movies he hasn't seen.

Bobby Kotick is one happy rich evil man right now. I agree with Oldboy08, COD4 was a lot of fun, I even tried MW2 but it got old real fast since it was more of the same. Better to keep the majority of the type of players who like MW3 out of the more interesting games out there anyway. Based on gamer target audience MW3 hits perfectly on the "obsession" years which falls between the ages of 11 to 15, anyone older than that will generally have a more sophisticated taste and get tired of the same game being repeated and sold at full price again!

once again COD tops the charts.....i'll tell u why: for one most people are scared of changes, two it's sad to say that parents are purchasing this game for under aged kids. three, if u listen to the chat menu in the game, it's nothing but young kids.....is like the madden series, u know ur getting the same thing, but people buy it bc there's nothing else good out there, another example...gas goes up n people r still paying for it......COD is always going to sell, people r like sheeps they just follow......try a new game worth ur money !!!! BF3 atleast gives a different taste than just regular apple pie !!!!

I'll stick to BF3, I loved COD4, logged more hours into that game than any other game i've ever played. But after Blops I just couldn't take COD anymore. I'm sure I would have fun with MW3, probably lots of fun but I need to pass on this one, my wallet is pinched, and games are super expensive in Japan.

Wow what a shocker COD made a lot of money yet again go figure. The real news should be is why would anyone pay 60 dollars for a worse version of a game they bought four years ago. (COD 4) Would not surprise me if they charged twenty dollars for map packs now, since they increased the price with MW2.

I swore I wasn't gonna get this game for months...then found myself in the midnight walmart line. I dont know what happened! Yeah it's more of the same, but that same is fun. Oh yeah, no denying the brilliance that is Battlefield, but I think we're used to the faster pace of MW and the jones to wanna rack up 20something kills in only 4 or 5 minutes or at least that's my excuse. Anyway, no one should lose any sleep over what game sells better or who's playing it, just pick up the controller and shoot some 13 yr olds!

@xgalacticax While I have no real personal problem with gamers buying COD, the problem is self evident. The sales of COD in it's first day (in just america and uk) eclipse the majority of games life time sales. The problem here is not the sales fo call of duty being bad, but the audience being so single mindedly devoted to a single title and ignoring a wealth of other games. There's plenty of better, more innovative, more fun, more exciting games but when the genre is stifled by a huge audience of people who refuse to move out of one game, or one genre then it becomes stale. This is bad for the industry as studios will try and imitate already stale franchises to get money and the gaming sectors other more story driven and innovate sides will be seen as the less profitable, more risky endeavours that take more effort to make. COD gamers need to branch out and play more games, COD isn't the problem, the audience of the game is.

@Son_of_Bmore Have fun playing your rehashed skill-less garbage, and im gonna go hop in a jet and get in a dog fight maybe i will destroy a few tanks while i am in the jet if i feel like it, then if i want i can jump out grab a tank and go blow some people up. Now you can have fun with your run around a arena and the person who wins is the person with the quickest reflexes. ( and don't pull the you obviously suck at cod bs my k/d was over 2.00 when i played that crap )

I didn't buy MW3 not because I hate call of duty, but because I can't justify the sixty dollar price tag to what essentially is a modern warfare 2 map pack update. Activision has every reason to keep doing this every year, it shows no signs of stopping. Which is unfortunate, because it shows that people have no problem playing the same thing every single year and rewarding the company for mediocrity instead of innovation like Call of Duty 4 did to the franchise.

So how about those dedicated servers now instead of crappy p2p?! You would thought that the best selling game ever (every year now) would get something like that.

I don't understand why it pains some people that a game does so well. This is good for the industry. When a game franchise exceeds box office sales of something as awesome as Star Wars, that puts video games on the map.

Even I thought the bubble would finally burst with this one, I must admit.... not that I ever doubted it would sell bucketloads, I just didn't think it could manage record breaking status yet again.

@malfreds i said it before, and i will say it again. i vote with my wallet, and i went with battlefield. i had every call of duty up to black ops and grew tired of it. most people bash because they have a REASON to. most bashers OWNED a call of duty game. do not group everyone who is talking bad about the game as haters.

Congratulations, Activision (and Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer). In a year that has not had lots of great financial news, this is really a good thing to hear. To whomever is reading this: if you don't like CoD, FPSs or even yourself ... its all good. Activision having a good year filters down to whatever you like too, ya know! its a really good time to like games!!
