Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 sets new launch records

Activision boasts latest military shooter sells 6.5 million units in US, UK within 24 hours; revenue tops $400 million.

Those who thought Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 couldn't top last year's Black Ops record-setting performance can think again. Today, Activision announced that it has again set a new high-water mark for its Call of Duty series, as Modern Warfare 3 sold more than 6.5 million units in the US and UK within its first 24 hours of availability.

Modern Warfare 3's day-one haul includes only two regions.
Modern Warfare 3's day-one haul includes only two regions.

Calling it the "biggest entertainment launch ever," Activision said that its latest first-person shooter generated more than $400 million in day-one revenue in the US and UK alone. That figure tops Black Ops' $360 million in 2010 and Modern Warfare 2's $310 million in 2009, both of which set launch records across all forms of entertainment.

"Other than Call of Duty, there has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records three years in a row," commented Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick. "Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise exceed worldwide theatrical box office for Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, two of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time."

Modern Warfare 3's arrival has also been a boon for Xbox Live. According to Activision, Microsoft posted a new record for most players using Xbox Live at one time following the launch of Modern Warfare 3.

Though analysts had been predicting Modern Warfare 3's multimillion-unit launch, the game's popularity apparently caught Activision off guard. Upon its launch on Monday, its new social platform Elite experienced significant instability due to heavy demand. As a make-good for that rocky launch, Activision is offering paid Elite subscribers an extra month free of charge.

Great Sales...But they should of just released more maps and modes for the old mw2 or black ops, because it's just more of the same old stuff. They should redesign mw and soon.

and for everyone saying people like i who DISLIKE the game, before you say we are just "haters" maybe you should ask us what or why we dislike the game. i got my xbox in 2008 and the first game i had? you guessed it, modern warfare. i had world at war, mw2, heck, i even bought black ops! a week after black ops, i was at gamestop trading ALL OF THEM IN! it was just too much for me. too much of the same. people have a logical reason of disliking something if they have an experience with it. cod4 was one of the best fps EVER and you know what they did? released world at war and took ALL FOCUS off the game. what did they do to take focus off world at war? MW2! it goes on and on. i would have been happy if they released tons of map packs for mw, but they did not. how many did they release for mw2? tons of rehashes from mw1. that is not how you treat the people who make you rich. that is why we hate the game. i am back to battlefield now. later.

I'm surprised at all the comments below from people who are surprised at these numbers. What did you expect was going to happen? There are a lot more kiddies out there who get mommy and daddy to spend 60 bucks every November than older gamers who know better than to spend their hard earned cash on the same re-hashed crap year after year. Look, for the most part, I enjoy the 'COD' series as it provides a few hours of gaming enjoyment. But I wait until a major price drop before I buy them, simply because I don't want to pay full price for the same game year after year. I'll wait a few months, and probably pick it up used for 25 bucks or so. When Activision / IW get off their lazy collective asses and actually introduce something new or radically different to the series, then I'll pick it up at full price. But until then....... P.S. I can't fault Activision / IW for their game plan. The masses are eating this game up, making said companies a moon full of cash, so why would they change anything? Expect to see the series continue on the same well-worn path until sales start to dip.

@reeree746 That will never happen,EA placed BF3 in a direct competition with MW3 with statements like "BF3 is designed to take CoD down." So ppl will compare these two games constantly, from sales to gameplay.Thats a part of any competition... And now,as a person neutral in this BF3/MW3 war who passed on both games,I must say, these numbers are very impressive. But Im not happy,CoD and BF3 in the end ruin gaming, they promote how creating games should be only about the money, and cashing in with a lot of corporate crap. Games should be made for innovation, creativity, and since they both are completely lacking in both BF3 and CoD,Im passing on both,Acti and EA don't deserve my money or support...

It's easy to hate on Activision, but it says more about us that we continue to buy their products (in record numbers in fact) even though they do very little to advance their formulaic approach. If you're a game developer, and you know that you can make close to $1 billion releasing pretty much the exact same game you released last year without having to update it...what would you do?

@Goyoshi12 Are you talking about EA and Battlefield 3? That's the most aggressive advertising campaign I've seen in gaming all year. Next is Assassin's Creed. Activision did very little in the way of advertising MW3 apart from the XP event and about 1 week before release.

@DrKill09 I couldn't help but notice your comment about COD, and it's mediocrity. The thing is, you gave Splatterhouse a 10 rating? Duke Nukem Forever a 8.5? We all are entitled to our opinions, but I think a lot of people overlook the amount of content that is put into those games, not to mention different play modes. Just saying, if COD is mediocre, then Splatterhouse would be pretty far behind mediocrity, and be lucky to pull a 4 rating, unless you're talking about the T-16 version, then you may be right with the 10 rating. lol

So remember kiddies! If you advertise your $#!+ hard enough, long enough, and strong enough even though your $#!+ is $#!+ then people will buy it no matter what. Thanks Activision! :D ...ya d-bags.

I don't care about da sales. I enjoyed this game's sngle player and spec ops than BF3. but Multi player is not better than BF3. but COD MW3 gave something which they didn't give before. MW3 leads BF3. Because BF3 was crab in single player campaign and cooperative missions. But it doesn't mean that COD MW3 has da best. they also gave nothing but it was better than BF3's. now they had to change their engine instead of upgrading it and saying " we polished". they got 89 (critic reviews) on metacritic, it is a good score but every critics said that the engine started to show its age. And Modern warfare3 got 3.1 from the users. what does it mean? Are they BF3 fans or they got tired of playing this game? COD MW3 became a brand rather than an innovative game. If they want to continue this they had to change everything.

My funds were low, so I had to choose from MW3, or Skyrim. Well, I chose Skyrim, and I'm happy I did! I recently purchased BF3, and Rage,so my FPS fix is good for now. I will get this one in the next week or so, giving me a little bit of time to get behind the rest of the COD world, which I'm sure I'll be getting killed over and over!!lol

How disappointing! I can't believe there are that many followers out there that would buy this rehashed crap on day one. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!! If they keep getting record breaking sales then they think they're doing it right. Tell everyone you know NOT to buy into the map packs at $15 (it's already to late for telling people not to buy the game). If they sell millions of map packs they think it's ok to sell them that high because all the cattle don't mind.

This always blows my mind. We all know they're the same every year so if you have last years version ( or any of the last 4 iterations) they why dont you kids just keep playing that game rather than spend another $60 on a game you already have. WHy? WHy? I dont unerstand paying another $60 for the same experience that you already have on your shelf. It pisses me off to see garbage like this supported while the other completely superior titles to come out this year may have low sales . . . . but a terrible rehash just dominates in sales

This is seriously not good for FPS and other genres as well. Just look at how COD has changed what FPS shooters are all about. The FPS has gone from being about exporation and taking on the enemy either by your self or as the lead to follow the guy in front of you and stay on a linear path. Its worse now because not only have other developers changed their FPS to follow this but the COD affect is branching out into other generes. RPG's as we know them could be changed forever in a few years. Just look it how dragon age 2 and mass effect 2 are compared to the first games, SE themselves even said FFXIII was made to play like a FPS. The FPS has seemed to become the kind of game where you get to shoot the enemy with cool guns from the characters perspective and it appears the RPG is becoming the kind of game where you get to kill the enemey with swords and magic as a custom and/or cool looking character.

I enjoy the Call of Duty games but the fact of the matter is that their sales numbers have nothing to do with how good of a game they are. Plenty of awesome games get much much lower sales numbers. The fact of the matter is that COD has become a pop culture event. People buy it that buy zero or almost zero games a year. I don't know how many times I've heard people asking about that "new Call of Duty game" in stores and talk about they never bother with other games or dismiss anything that might be fantastical or cartoonish. If you buy Call of Duty because that's how you game fine. All these people buying it just to do so is what is crazy.

is this really trues? where is the world coming to... Activision launches a game that's an exact copy of the 1rst and second installement only with different weapons/perks etc, with the same graphics, motor etc yet they break a lauch record? kinda makes me wonder why truly innovative games get bashed...

Anyone that thought MW3 would sell bad, is not smart. Love it or hate it, it was going to and did outsell blackops because it has a massive fan base. Congratz to Activison. A halo and BF3 fan. :)

I can't be the only person who's sick and tired of hearing all of you people whine about games you don't like. Guess what you're not any better or smarter than any of the people who are fans of the COD series. Just because you're not a fan of something that millions of people love doesn't make you any better than them. They have just a right to play a game they like than you do. It's their money they can make their own decisions on what they want to spend it on. I love the COD series and guess what i also love the other game series that you also play that seems to give you your elitist attitudes.

playing COD every year is like eating KFC or MCD everyday: some people find eating junk food everyday is ridiculas, but some people still find burgers or chips the best food ever as if they have never tasted a 16oz steak before. To conclude, different people have different tastes, but that labels what kinda person you are. Same logic, same analogy. People are always over-conservative and limiting at their own world as well so they never know what is better and that contributes zero improvements in the society, eventually, collapse. To be honest, I used to like COD, but for a game maker like IW they make no improvements at all. In contrast BF3 is able to demonstrate how the next gen of FPS looks like, which impressed me. Don't get the brands fool you, you are unique and you have your taste.

Wasn't surprised by Black Ops' success, it was a good game with a good, exciting campaign, and it sold well because of word-of-mouth, with people telling their friends to buy it. i don't really see the same happening for this game, it just isn't as much fun, the campaign didn't keep my interest, and the multiplayer is an insanely laggy, rubber-banding, camping-filled cluster**** (even more so than Blops, i mean).
