Capcom praises DmC and Dragon's Dogma in FY13 earnings

Capcom announces a ¥2.97 billion profit for FY13, and will more strongly invest in "directing our development resources to the development of online games" in the future.

Capcom has announced an expected profit of ¥2.97 billion (approximately $30m/£19.3m) for the 2013 financial year, following its revised April forecast.

No Caption Provided

As predicted, Resident Evil 6 "did not meet with [Capcom's 7 million sales target] and thus was not able to play a role in leading the segment's sales growth." The game has sold 4.9 million copies.

UK developer Ninja Theory's take on DmC: Devil May Cry "enjoyed stable popularity in overseas markets and posted solid sales," with the game's last sales tally coming in at 1.15 million copies sold.

The popularity of Dragon's Dogma was "greater-than-expected," however, and saw an "unprecedented" million copies sold for an original title.

Despite making a profit, Capcom was down 56 percent year-on-year in net income. The publisher previously blamed its current outlook on "excessive outsourcing" and "a delayed response to the expanding digital contents market," two problems it aims to rectify by funneling ¥7.2 billion (£48 million/$73 million) into a company-wide restructuring.

Looking ahead, Capcom expects to make a good amount of money in "directing our development resources to the development of online games (mobile, PC online and downloads for consumer games), which is a growing area, and by releasing large-scale titles such as 'Monster Hunter 4' and 'Lost Planet 3' focused on the domestic and overseas markets respectively."

For the next financial year, Capcom expects to make ¥6.8 billion ($68m/£44m) in net income.

You have to give Capcom credit for Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen. That game is a killer riot despite minor blemishes. I sunk about 140 hours into that title. Absolutely addictive. If they don't follow up on the franchise I'd be baffled. If they manage it right, they can really give Bethesda a run for the money, and even take some starch out of Dark Souls franchises' sails. Fighting two wyrm/dragon's simultaneously deep in the Bitterblack arena was about as much chaos as I've seen in my gaming career, even making Dark Souls look a bit tame.Namco/Bandai may have rediscovered the "merciless punishing difficulty game" camp, but really Capcom never left. Capcom stayed brutal even when it was out of style.

If only Capcom would ease up on the Resident Evil IP and focus more on some of these other franchises, I think we'd see another renaissance for them.

Make Devil May Cry yourselves Capcom and it will actually sell. NEVER let those f*cking noobs touch DMC again. LOL

Yes, I'm talking about YOU, Ninja Theory. You suck. I hope you learned from this mistake, Capcom. :)

Give us a proper DMC V for the next-gen, please. Proper, as in: MADE IN JAPAN.

@orthodox1976 @orthodox1976 Ninja theory did a solid job on DmC.

You and all other buthurt DmC fanboys should learn the difference between a good game and what you expect of a game.

Capcom gave NT carte blanche for this game. So if you want to complain, complain @ capcom.

@DamnTastics @orthodox1976 we didn't say "DmC is on par with DMC 3", crapcom and ninja "can't do crap without using UE3 and still fail at it" theory said those words.

it's nothing like dark souls at all except that both games are hard, but dragons dogma isn't hard in a cheap way like dropping all your points when dieing

Funny how some people believe that selling 1.15 million copies for a AAA game is a success. AAA games should sell over 2M copies for making a real profit. DMC was a failure in sales, even CRAPCOM admitted that just some weeks ago when they blamed "excessive outsourcing" for the low sales. DMC2? nah, I think Devil May Cry 5 has higher chances now.

I thought DMC would sell a lot more. Guess there really were a lot of people hating the new direction and look of Dante.

@Strider8009 @Vendrena Is the trolling from supporters better than the trolling from detractors?

Yes, yes it is, because most detractors attacked the game without even trying it.

I'm pretty sure Dragon Dogma was just a test to see how a Monster Hunter would do on hardware more powerful than ps2/wii.

Exactly, it still a PR disaster regardles how you feel about the game.

I have never seen a company other than EA who handled a crisis so poorly, as a result capcom is not doing well

Its funny how that works

It was a PR disaster, regardless how anyone feels about the game.

It made Capcom and by association Ninja Theory look like fools

Both were great games despite what the immature fanboys say.

Glad to see Dragon's Dogma doing well. But how can they consider DmC a success when it didn't even do as well as Devil May Cry 4? DmC is a disgrace to that franchise.

Very good to see Dragons Dogma doing good. RE6, well I had a lot of fun playing it with my friends and I hope to see another in the future. DmC was pretty good. Better than I expected. I hope to see a DmC2 in the future. As for Capcom, I don't hate them, I only hate their DLC practices. It's just fucking awful. I remember the days where I have to work hard to unlock a costume or something like that. Now, I have to pay for it. Capcom, you used to be such a good company.

Glad to see Dragons Dogma sold well, hopefully Capcom can work out the kinks and deliver an awesome sequel. Most of my gripes with the game are with the lackluster story & characters, exploring Gransys & getting into all kinds of epic fights with my pawns was awesome. I also love how eerie & dangerous things get when you find yourself traveling at night, I recommend people play this game with some good headphones on. "Tis weak to fire!"

Stories like this make me smile. I couldn't think of a better company to suffer a bit than Capcom. I especially like how that Call of Duty wannabe piece of crap RE6 failed to meet Capcom's "reasonable" sales expectations.

The only unfortunate part is that despite the lower sales, they still managed to turn a healthy profit. Stinky.

Capcom had previously called both DmC and Dragon's Dogma sales disappointing.

Were they lying then, or lying now?

God Capcom is such a shitty company these days.

I know I'm gonna get a lot of hate for this but Resident Evil 5 (IMO >:O) was a great game. Great story and pacing and characters. Most of all I remember that ultra badass fight with Wesker on roids with Jill vs Chris and Sheva.

Resident Evil 6 the story was dull, poorly planned out, and boring in many places (Leon's campaign), and a lot of the new characters were kinda boring. They just tried to do too much.

@WantYouBad I agree, Resident Evil 5 was awesome. Do you know why? Because of the BOULDER PUNCHING. I was sad to hear that Resident Evil 6 had 100% less of that. That is to say, no boulder punching at all.

No wonder people didn't like it.

@WantYouBad even if I was divided in opinion Resi 5 had some merit as you say and a lot of right to exist, specially to warn us and capcom of the direction the saga was definitely taking. It was the first to try coop in the saga and it pulled it very well, but that's also the true way to play it, since AI reactions really killed the immersion.

@WantYouBad RE5 was pretty awesome to me. It was like a perfect little cheesy action-horror film turned into a pretty fun game. Mercs mode was great too. The only thing I really dislike about the game is that they made Mercs mode DLC characters that couldn't be played with regular Mercs mode characters. Makes as much sense as releasing Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 then saying you can't make teams with characters from the original game and the new one; it either has to be all new characters or all old ones.

@WantYouBad I sorta agree with you in RE5 case, im sorry, but wesker was too awesome to call RE5 to be bad game(also, merchenaries). For RE6 though, i only liked Jake's and Miss wong campaign(i just like ada too much to call it bad) and i though Jake was awesome too. Rest of game(excluding merchenaries) yeeah... lets just pretend those dont exist.
