Capcom scuttles Flagship

Publisher set to dissolve the brand behind handheld Zelda, Kirby games next month, employees to be retained.

As part of its continuing effort to streamline operations, Capcom is eliminating its subsidiary developer Flagship (not to be confused with Hellgate: London developer Flagship Studios).

In its year-end financial report today, Capcom updated investors on the status of some of its streamlining efforts, saying that Clover Studio was in the process of being dissolved and Studio 8 was completely consolidated as of March. The next Capcom label to fall will be Flagship, as Capcom is set to merge with--and then dissolve--the subsidiary June 1.

Flagship was established in 1997 and worked with Nintendo to develop a number of portable hits, including The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (with its Four Swords addition) for the Game Boy Advance, as well as the Game Boy Color Zelda titles Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages. Flagship also developed Kirby and the Amazing Mirror on the GBA and Kirby Squeak Squad for the Nintendo DS. While Flagship did venture into game design with certain titles, its primary purpose was to work on the storytelling and dialog aspects of games from Capcom's other studios.

[UPDATE] According to a Capcom spokesperson, while the Flagship name is getting the axe, its employees won't be. Noting that the only thing to change will be the company name on their business cards, the spokesperson said all Flagship staffers are expected to continue working at the publisher in the same capacities.

I don't like this at all. I think that Capcom is making enough money to support their smaller developers as well. Dissolving Clover was a monumental mistake, IMO, and now this. I can see the future Capcom only making mainstream games and not caring about innovation at all.

Rave_n2 Hal Labratories is the one that made the Console Kirby games, and the Handheld Kirby games before Flagship made the Handheld games since Kirby was created by Hal Labratories.

Zelda Oracle of Ages and Season were AMAZING games you only need to see the ratings of those games but not only that they sold around 4 million copies worldwide...so they made a lot of money off the Zelda name.

read about 3rd party problems with nintendo. they are abandoning it because they cant make money. they made good money with their 360 games and are going to devote their resorces to where they make the most money.

That's too bad... those were decent games. But Nintendo's not brain-dead... they know how important Zelda is to their success and will certainly keep that in mind if they decide they need help with their next installment.

ScarfaceLP I agree Nintendo can make there own division with those developers and and have them make Handheld exclusives have them as a 2nd Party developer, or maybe First Party developer.

Nintendo needs to run and pick up ever single person that's part of the Flagship team, all of those handheld Zelda's were highly polished and entertaining. Every game listed above was real good.

I never cared for Zelda on handhelds, and Gameboy style development is better aimed at DS or downloadable games. Clover is the big loss, but I think it was more about the Clover people wanting out than Capcom closing it. Viewtiful Joe was a nice surprise that came out of nowhere, but it was already getting tired. Better it die with some dignity than have more bad games tied to it. For once Capcom decided not to milk a franchise dry, probably because VJ didn't do too well financially in the first place. I'd like to see a Megaman game that played and looked like Viewtiful Joe, that would breath life into a really tired franchise, and keep the spirit of another. I'd really like a new Megaman Legends as well. That series was vastly under-appreciated and was the only time that franchise showed any promise of a different kind of game. I could almost see it as an online game, maybe even a semi-MMO like Monster Hunter.

So they're absorbing the small, really good studio and then killing it off. I don't know corporate dynamics, and I really don't want to try, but my best guess they're attempting to repurpose the developers directly under the Capcom name. Of course, some of them could still end up leaving, but I'm sure they'll keep some of them.

Capcom must have developed some unexplainable disease which causes them to delete awesome stuff. Now, no Viewtiful Joe and maybe no more Four Swords? Capcom are doing wrong, and they need to right those wrongs before their reputation falls drown the drain faster than some particularly wet coins.

"Humikimi Yeesh what is going on with Capcom. First Clover and now Flagship. It is like they enjoy dissolving studios that make GOOD games." The trend these days is away from GOOD games, and toward mass market games that are dumbed down so the maximum number of people are interested in purchasing them...Sad, Hollywood went through a period that was very similar. Thats why you see so many indie films nowadays, because the big wigs finally figured out that you can't have everything appeal to everyone, hence the NEED for a niche market.

that's sad to hear, they actually were a talented team. I'm very impressed with how well they did with Minish Cap, it's not your every day non-Nintendo developer that can translate the essentials of the Zelda franchise into their own Zelda game.

@ Latinbro Capcom isn't dissolving. Unless I have misunderstood this article, it seems Capcom is MERGING with flagship (their subsidary) and then are going to dissolve them.

The only good Zelda game they made that were actually epic were the Oracle of Ages and Seasons. But then again, they weren't progressing well and actually needed Miyamoto to step in and help them with that, without his large influence those games would have turned out terrible. So I don't really care what happens to these guys in terms of Zelda.

Maybe Nintendo can pickup some Devs here, they have worked well with them in the past. Flagship is a decent studio just nothing that slams you in the face with awesome(Although Minish Cap was pretty good.)
