CES '08: 360 could do an 180 on Blu-ray

[UPDATE] Microsoft exec tells Reuters that if customers choose Sony's high-def disc format, the Xbox manufacturer might make an add-on for it.

At the Consumer Electronics Show two years ago, shortly after Microsoft announced the HD DVD add-on for the Xbox 360, the company's then-Xbox marketing executive Peter Moore admitted that a future add-on that would play Blu-ray discs was not out of the question, if the need for one arose.

With Warner Bros. last week committing to produce Blu-ray movies exclusively, many industry watchers predicted that Sony's high-definition disc format--a prominent feature of the PlayStation 3--had scored a knockout punch on Toshiba's HD DVD. At this year's CES, Microsoft's Xbox group marketing manager Albert Penello told Reuters today that the Warner move wasn't the end of the format wars, but acknowledged that his company is still keeping its options open.

"It should be consumer choice; and if that's the way they vote, that's something we'll have to consider," Penello told the news service.

While Penello downplayed the potential impact of the Warner deal on Xbox 360 sales, he acknowledged that it wasn't something the HD DVD-backing Microsoft had wanted to see.

"You can't say it's not a bummer, not a setback, but I've seen this battle declared over so many times," Penello said, adding, "I want consumers to have a voice in this and I think there are a lot of consumers who bought HD DVD who are going to have a say in how this shakes out."

[UPDATE] While Microsoft may be keeping its options open, it is far from abandoning HD DVD outright. Speaking with GameSpot, the console maker reaffirmed that the HD DVD format is still its high-definition playback standard of choice, for the time being. "Microsoft currently has no plans at this time to consider Blu-ray as an option. We continue to believe that HD DVD is the best optical solution for consumers, since it's the only format today that delivers quality experiences at affordable prices."

I really doubt a Blue-Ray player would ever be put onto a Xbox-360. At best microsoft would have to work out some sort of deal with sony for a blue ray player in the xbox 720.

Smartiepants - was that a joke? There is one, look it up. I THINK it is by Samsung or LG, not sure. This is all good and well, but it will still never play games in blu-ray...

@Loucetios: um read the exact statement you quoted again.... it's a double negative.... It's a definite blow but you know I heard Moore's statement the first time it came out and I knew MS can and would go Blu if the format became standard. And while yes, they have to pay royalties or what not to whoever manufactures them for MS, it'll still be an add-on. In other words, if I don't want Bluray, I can choose not to buy the add-on. But whatever. I have a PS3 too, so I have the bluray player already. :)

Still better than seeing an HD-DVD add-on for the PS3. But if they're saying something like that, it probably means they have no intention of making GAMES in any of those formats. And that's what really ticks me off about the 360. I mean, I know DVDs can still be use to make games and all, but, as it happened with the CD, won't the next batch of games (such as MGS4, whose developers say Blu-Ray is a necessity rather than just a design choice) need a media different than DVDs? Then how will you play these games on a 360? Will they just make users buy the goddamn add-ons and that's it? I really want to know what will be MS's move when such times come.

@ rocoswav ..i dun think xbox will make games on a different media. they'll just stick with making games on DVD9. if they did however then they just be screwing over 17million xbox360 users. this reminds me of Dreamcast vs PS2. dreamcast was good..but only used cds where ps2 used cds and dvds which is why it outlasted, and its still going! XD

@Deihmos ahh excuse me sir but no. im not talkin about whos going to manufacture the the blue ray device for MS, it could be samsamg or who ever it doesn't matter. they have to pay royalties for the blue-ray tecnology that is being implemented in the device because its sonys invention their the ones that payed billions to develope and push the format.

The sooner someone releases a combi-player that handles Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, the happier I'll be. That way no-one loses out.

Sweet another add-on. Imma display my xbox360 and all its add-ons beside my Sega Genesis with the cartrige stand, Sega CD, Sega 32X lolll jk. This was probably why M$ didnt want to add a built-in HD player with the console. As well they didnt believe in HD-DVD that much.

Another "add-on"? They need to wise up and start making internal drives as a standard component instead of external crap. Otherwise you end up with a PS2 HDD kind of ordeal where developers would like to take advantage of it but do not because an aftermarket add-on ensures probably 10% of system owners will even purchase it.

rocoswav: What you say makes no sense. First if the 360 was going to have a blu ray player it would be manufactured by another company and it's not like it would be sold at a loss. I highly doubt a blu ray add on will ever happen.

Of course this could mean that if they don't make a Blu-ray add-on for the 360 that the next Xbox could potentially have a Blu-ray drive. I doubt Microsoft would be stupid enough to not go with some sort of drive in the next system thinking that digital distribution will be all the rage in another year or two. Downloading 40GB movie files? I don't think so. I'd also not be too keen on keeping my entire video collection on a HDD. Especially since I dropped my 250GB external drive this weekend and it never came back up. And imagine the storage that would take. A 300GB drive would only hold about 7 movies (at 40GB each).

As far as gaming goes, this is currently a non-issue. But when the next systems roll around, Microsoft will have to include a larger storage medium which appears it will likely be Blu-Ray. Who's to say that Sony won't finally realize they're not adept software designers and Microsoft decides to stick to the programming side of things? This will result in an alliance built to crush the juggernaut TREND that is the Nintendo Wii.

Well, there is an update to this information: With Warner now going exclusive with Blue Ray this will also include New Line which means No Lord of the Rings on HD-DVD. Now Paramount has announced Blue Exclusivity along with Dinsey (Buena Vista, Dimension) and Criterion stating they will go Blue Ray but not until late this year or early next year. Add to this Sony and Fox are Blue Ray which also means no Star Wars on HD-DVD. In my opinion offering a new format is a little pointless considering DVD has just finally hit its stride after 10 years of being on the market. How much better do we really need to see a movie? And most people who have ran out and bought Blue Ray or HD don't even have there set ups properly configured. Is it important to see garbage like Rush Hour 3 in 1080? This won't make the movie any better. It will still suck and always be garbage. Just much clearer garbage.

"Sony still has a say in who they licence Blu Ray to. The only way the 360 could get an add on is if Sony's Blu Ray partners voted to put it on 360." Dude, think about what you just said. Do you REALLY think that Sony wouldn't want Microsoft to support the SONY BACKED FORMAT?!? Microsoft fans buying Sony backed DVDs? Seriously man, get over your petty, inside-the-box way of thinking. Sony will be THRILLED if Microsoft supports it's high def format. Microsoft's huge install base would be generating revenue for Sony. If you think Sony would turn that down, you're nuts. On a personal note, I just hope Microsoft brings Divx codecs to the 360 before they worry about blue ray. Forget blue ray discs, Divx support is the biggest thing the PS3 has over the Xbox360 right now.

Let's get this stupid format war over with so I can start buying hi def movies!!! It would be silly for Microsoft to not put the winning formats player in the xbox 360. That is correct, anyone wanting to make a blu-ray device will have to get a license from Sony. Microsoft will need to get a license from Sony, much like they had to get a license from Toshiba to make the HD-DVD add on for the 360.
