Confusion, shortages hobble US Wii Fit kickoff

Despite official launch date of May 19, retailers won't have game until May 21--if they get it at all this week.

At the 2008 Game Developers Conference in February, Nintendo announced that Wii Fit would launch on May 19. The Japanese game giant's proclamation led many gamers, technophiles, and health enthusiasts to mark their calendars under the assumption they could get their hands on the $90 balance-board based, exercise-centric title on the third Monday of the month.

However, confusion began to erupt when Nintendo's nationwide advertising campaign for Wii Fit began touting the game as going on sale on Wednesday, May 21. When queried by GameSpot last week, a representative for Nintendo of America insisted the game would go on sale on May 19. "It may take a few days for shipments to reach every part of the country and the ads you saw may have considered that," said the rep.

Today, Nintendo is holding a Wii Fit launch event in New York City, where it sold the game to a select few. The rest of the country won't be as fortunate. Nintendo made a last-minute announcement today that the May 19 date only applies to only one location--the Nintendo World Store in New York City. According to a "Nintendo World ambassador" manning the phones at the store, the game sold out there in under an hour this morning. However, subsequent reports received by GameSpot say the game was in stock for several hours. A call made to the Nintendo World Store at 3pm EDT/12pm PDT confirmed there were no more units for sale.

Calls to more than a dozen other retailers throughout the country--including ones just blocks away from the Nintendo World Store--produced an uniform result. "The game doesn't come out until Wednesday," was the oft-repeated reply from more than 20 clerks and managers at GameStop, Best Buy, and Target locations on both coasts and in the Midwest. One GameStop employee in San Francisco seemed particularly glum, saying, "We won't even know if we are getting any quantity until Wednesday."

GameSpot queried Nintendo reps about the confusion surrounding the Wii Fit launch, as well as the prospect of shortages--shortages which apparently have led to online retailers such as Amazon ceasing to offer preorders. As of press time, no reply had been received.

For more on Wii Fit, which is already on sale in Europe, Australasia, and Japan--where it has sold 1 million units--check out GameSpot's full review. To learn more about the actual health effects of the game, check out GameSpot editors' collective Wii Fit blog, which will launch later this week.

Let's say I work for one of these retailers. Even I was surprised we weren't selling Wii Fit today. Let's just say this shortage isn't happening everywhere. People are really interested in this thing where I'm at, admittedly they are mostly the older genertations.

@ Silentshadow56 The state of the economy is different now then it was in holiday of 2006, yet you still saw the Wii as a significantly lower (up to $50) cheaper in Japan. So how do you explain that? With all honestly, I really do think that Nintendo knows they can make more money off of US gamers, our financial standards for things are different, and they've shown they can do that with the pricing differences between both territories for YEARS. You tell me I should now facts, maybe you should know history eh? @ Guts5 Oh yea, I'm not denying it will sell a crap load here. I'm just saying, when the mainstream media shifts to something else, which it will, that's inevitable, what is Nintendo going to do? How severe of a drop off are they going to have? If the casuals aren't buying your hardware, that's bad. And since they don't buy a lot of software, that's bad, because you can't make that up with hardware that turns a huge profit. Without the hardcore, who will buy lots of software, you can't fill that gap, and you have problems. If they can't continue to stimulate the mainstream BIG TIME over the next couple of years, they will feel a serious backlash because of it.

If this game goes on 'shortage' for the next three months, I officially call nintendo a bunch of pansies. Either they don't have enough faith in their own product to ensure the ability to meet demand before releasing it, or they trying to ride the 'low supply' freight train that the Wii has been riding for the last year and a half. Either way, I'm tired of the BS. They still haven't lowered the price of their launch titles... Sure say demand is what drives it... I personally think they are very good and lowering supply to fake demand.

you people who are all bashing nintendo do understand economics right? low supply = high prices. and the reason for low supply???............uhhh....EVERYONE IS BUYING THEM. there is a reason that the wii has been out OVER A YEAR SHORTER than the 360 and is still outselling it WHILE not meeting demand still!!! its amazing how anyone could think that nintendo doesnt know what they are doing. they are absolutely ruling the market right now and will for years to come. and when they eventually DO meet demand, and THEN drop pricess.....yea...you people need to stop arguing about nintendo becuase of how angry you are that you spent over 1000 dollars on a 360 and P$3, and are having your systems CRUSHED by nintendo. give nintendo the respect it has earned. and yes, it HAS earned it.

ghost867 Very well said. I'll say this though. How many of those 10 minute ab type videos/dvds have sold over the years? This game will sell... I find it hillarious that people could do those very exercises without the video or game, but somehow the game/video is what gets them to do them... it's a really odd situation to be sure.

They spend all the money pushing the Wii Fit onto places like USA Today, to get it to the main stream, then the up the price (as compared to it's JP release) to $90 so they'd be guaranteed to make a killing, and they're not even gonna have nearly enough to meet the demand. Call me crazy but have you ever heard of something called a recession? The price of wii fit in America isn't more because they want to make a killing its because the value of the dollar sucks right now especially compared to the yen. That is why there is such a price difference. It's great to have opinions but don't promote such stupidity that is clearly contrary to the fact.

*Dies laughing* They spend all the money pushing the Wii Fit onto places like USA Today, to get it to the main stream, then the up the price (as compared to it's JP release) to $90 so they'd be guaranteed to make a killing, and they're not even gonna have nearly enough to meet the demand. Wait a second, this sounds a lot like the Wii itself. They spend all the money to get it into the mainstream, they way overprice it (as compared to the price in Japan), and they don't have enough to meet demand. Typical Nintendo marketing and manufacturing. But hey, who cares right? Let them tackle their casual market with low budget, low quality, and high selling games for the very young, the very old, and the family. I'm gonna go on being a hardcore gamer like the millions of others in the world who will continue to drop $60 every 1-2 months on a game, and continue to buy high priced console and accessories, and guess what, I'm not going anywhere. Who knows if ANY of this mainstream media will be surrounding the Nintendo, and if it's not, they will find themselves in a serious hole with no more hardware selling, and even less software then the low amount they're selling now. Go ahead, mark me for it. But I'm just posting my opinion.

bagwell they just can't keep up with production due to the high demand. They produce over 120,000 Wiis a day.

I'm sort of wondering if this is Nintendo using the same tactic as they are doing with their consoles. Creating more hype, through trickling supplies and delays.
