Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy Review Roundup

Crash and burn or crash hit?

Crash Bandicoot's N. Sane Trilogy remaster collection delighted fans the world over when it was fully revealed at PSX last year. Nostalgic PlayStation owners had long called for Crash's return, and they'll finally get their wish now that the N. Sane Trilogy has launched.

The bundle includes three old-school Crash games: Crash Bandicoot, Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, and Crash Bandicoot: Warped. They were all originally made by Naughty Dog, though Activision's Vicarious Visions has developed the PlayStation 4 collection.

Now Playing: Crash Bandicoot Warped Boss Battle - N. Sane Trilogy Gameplay

Vicarious Visions used the original games' level geometry, but the gameplay is rebuilt from scratch. Some new features for the updated versions include a unified checkpoint and save system (including manual and auto-saving), as well as a unified menu system and Coco as a playable character for every level in the game.

We enjoyed what we played of the N. Sane Trilogy at E3 2017, but what do critics think of the final build? In GameSpot's Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy review, critic Peter Brown said Vicarious Visions has "succeeded in revitalizing Crash from an artistic perspective while preserving the charm that made him appealing when he first showed up," but he notes that "Crash's original adventures aren't as inventive or surprising as they were 20 years ago."

For a wider view of critical opinion, check out our review roundup below or take a look at GameSpot sister site Metacritic.

  • Game: Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy
  • Developer: Vicarious Visions
  • Platform: PlayStation 4
  • Release: June 30
  • Price: US $40 / £30 / AU $70

GameSpot -- 6/10

"The culprit behind Crash's dated feel is the passage of time. Vicarious Visions, for its part, succeeded in revitalizing Crash from an artistic perspective while preserving the charm that made him appealing when he first showed up, but years have passed since the original PlayStation was relevant, and we are well past the formative years of 3D gaming. It's easy to imagine how a dyed-in-the-wool Crash fan will fall in love all over again via the N. Sane Trilogy, but if you're experiencing Crash for the first time--or the first time in a while--it might pain you to realize that Crash's original adventures aren't as inventive or surprising as they were 20 years ago." -- Peter Brown [Full review]

IGN -- 8.5/10

"I didn't want the Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy to break what wasn't broken. Thankfully, Vicarious Visions clearly didn't want to either, and the studio's reverence for the original maddening yet rewarding challenges that have stood the test of time is clearly on display. On one hand, that leads to the frustrating limitations of the original Crash Bandicoot persisting 20 years later. But it also results in the incredible visual and aural overhaul and the gameplay tweaks to earlier entries, like time trials and crate counters, that Naughty Dog added later in the series. Those additions make the overall package so much more cohesive while never forgetting what made, and what still makes, so much of Naughty Dog's original trilogy a blast to play." -- Jonathon Dornbush [Full review]

Game Informer -- 8/10

"Not all games from yesteryear hold up well. The original Crash Bandicoot likely would drive people nuts if it returned in its original form. Vicarious Visions made it fun again, without altering its DNA--a feat that deserves recognition. Although Crash spins and jumps his way through most levels, variety was the key to this series' success. Naughty Dog always included a different wrinkle or evolution of a concept in each stage, and that continues here. For all three games, the feeling of repetition never sinks in, a factor that goes a long way in making this trilogy a blast to play. It's good to have Crash back in the limelight. I hope this isn't the last we see of him." -- Andrew Reiner [Full review]

GamesRadar -- 3.5/5

"There's just no escaping it, there might be brand new death animations to keep you entertained--oh look I've been swallowed by a lion again--but there's no avoiding that the controls just mean that Crash Bandicoot has become Dark Souls. It's a horrible shame. After being so excited for the remaster, there's just no avoiding that the N. Sane Trilogy and you aren't going to get along for a while. When it takes sheer willpower to survive the original's first island when you've played the game for years, you know something has gone wrong somewhere. Those coming in fresh to the franchise aren't going to know what's hit them. Sure, it's big, beautiful, and positively packed with charm, but it's time to prepare to die. I love the N.Sane Trilogy in its new roguelite form but some things will definitely frustrate those new to the franchise looking to find out what all the fuss is about." -- Louise Blain [Full review]

Trusted Reviews -- 3/5

"It's no big surprise to say that the N. Sane trilogy is another pleasant form of fan service from Sony, which does seem keen on this kind of thing when you remember it’s doing the same with Final Fantasy XII and Shenmue III. And the intended audience will love it. If you don't fall into this group, though, I don't think you should take the plunge now. Probably best to find something that was developed a bit more recently." -- Simon Miller [Full review]

TheSixthAxis -- 9/10

"As far as remakes go, you can't get any better than this. Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy is exactly how fans envisioned it--an unadulterated celebration of a PlayStation pioneer. With such a weight on their shoulders, Vicarious Visions have pulled it off with such diligence, infused with a streak of their own creativity. Then there's Naughty Dog original efforts, of course. Even those only acquainted with Uncharted and The Last of Us can appreciate how the studio first made its name, and the journey from Crash Bandicoot to Warped is one of continued innovation. Some two decades later, it's great to see that some things never change." -- Jim Hargreaves [Full review]

6/10? 3/5? what's with those scores? this is one of the best remasters I seen so far together with wipeout, it runs great, the feel of the original games is intact, the graphics are amazingly remade, what more do you want? this is easily a 9 out of 10

@baral-o: Scores like that are inevitable. But not many platformers today are "revolutionary" as those Crash games have been at their time of release.

Revolutionary? WTF are some of you smoking? Really how can you say these games were revolutionary at the time of their launch. 6/10 is the correct score then and now. Sheesh?

@baral-o: Exactly. IGN gave the original Crash Bandicoot: Warped a 9.1/10, yet this whole remade trilogy scored 8.5/10 on their website. What exactly are they scoring this game against? It's the originals remade. Enough said.

Agree with your 9/10 score all the way. Anywhere between 9 - 10 is accurate.

@baral-o: this is what I dislike about review scores. What is the criteria that this game is being judged on? Is it losing points because it doesn't hold up to current games? Is it that they should have done more to upgrade the game and make it better and more modern? Was it a game and series that was overrated years ago and we overlooked it?

For me I'm just expecting this to be classic Crash Bandicoot with modern graphics, not much else. If it does that, which it seems to do, I'll be more than satisfied. Don't know what number grade it warrants but 6.5 seems like a low score for a game that does what people are expecting it to do.

"he played roughly halfway through each game in the collection."

This disclaimer is all you need to know about the Gamespot review. Totally incomplete. These games aren't even long and he didnt even play through them all. How do you review a game you didn't complete. I get it for RPGs that are 100+ hours of gameplay but wow. Lazy.

@gmbaker3383: "Totally incomplete."

Correct, but for a package that has promised to be structurally the same games, why would you need to replay them in entirety to appraise them? Half of each game will be enough to let you see how the graphics and models have changed, how well the design has aged, how much the minor changes (like a playable Coco) work.

@7tizz: You know what? Nobody cares about a subjective review from you. People go to this site for objective and in-depth reviews, which this was not. That is what video game reviews should be about, not some rant from a judgmental edgy gamer.

What this review really lacks, is to take into account what the product was aiming for and the goals. You cannot rate something, unless you know what it was set out to do. Reviewing the taste of an orange when you think you are eating an apple, wouldn't result in anything useful.

I really disagree with Gamespot's approach here. Is a collection of games containing two of the ps1's then most highly rated and well liked games really deserving of a 6? With very impressive visual upgrades, no less? Gameplay upgrades were never promised. You HAVE to look at a release like this through nostalgia glasses.

@7tizz: One one hand I completely agree with you, I also think the game didn't age well and is below the standards of our generation. On the other hand, I see other games that are exectly like that (especially from Nintendo) where they see it with nostalgia goggles and rate them very well. So I think this discrepancy shouldn't exist...

@7tizz: Couldn't disagree more 7tizz. Because even still, the gameplay isnt bad. It is dated, but especially in the case of parts two and three, they're still very good. Of course, it's all opinion. But if you look at the 82 it has on Metacritic, it seems most critics do feel this type of context is important. And I also take issue with the movie analogy. Seems like you're talking about a reboot or remake. Being a remaster, I say this is more akin to the repainted classic car analogy. It's still going to drive like it did in the 50s, but it can be made to look prettier than ever. Modern driver's may have a hard time though.

@7tizz: I would mention the flaws in comparison with contemporaries but still tilt the review with respect to its quality in its release context. Philosophical differences here. We're not gonna agree. A lot of reviewers look at it my way, some look at it the other way. From the beginning, all i said was that i disagree with Gamespot's take. And i offered my thoughts. And i stand by them.

@7tizz: I don't know about disservice, I think any car lover would have contempt for a magazine that couldn't appreciate a classic car.

Ignore the analogy for one minute and let's think about the review writing about how a 20 year old game isn't fresh or inventive. Wooow no shit sherlock. If you read the review the complaints are nonsensical and arbitrary, talking about one hit deaths and spikes in difficulty while not having finished half of any of the games, it's a joke.

I don't listen to many reviews unless something is classed 100% as bad, this is why i don't trust sites like IMDB.. always some bad apples trying to make scores go down.

Anything 7+ i consider worthy especially if you like the particular genre of game, because one mans 7 could be another mans 8 or so.. and let's face it, how often does something get rated 9.5 or even 10? only up to 9's exist to me.

It's too subjective, and trolls ruin scores purposely.

Looks like gamespot wants to be the edgy kid with a different opinion because they think it makes them a special snowflake lol.

Judging an old game for having old mechanics is like judging a vintage car for not having ABS or wasting too much gas. Thats just the way things were during that time. You know what happens when you try to implement new mechanics to an HD remake of an old game? Go ask robomoto what people thought of tony hawks pro skater HD *shiver*.

@jonnybrownieboy: I couldn't agree more with you man. You see, this is the problem now with some critics, the approach they have against a classic is kind of silly, Crash is a classic, we should treat it like such regardless of a reboot or a remake. It's the same approach they have with movies in general, some movies nowadays who got a score less than 50 would get a 80+ if they were released 20 years ago. Back in the days Crash Bandicoot held it's ground against Mario 64 pretty well, two different games meant to be in the same category.

"--Abrupt spikes in difficulty that could have been ironed out
--Outdated designs feel at odds with the modern presentation"

So, in a nutshell, you guys gave this a 6 because it was difficult and outdated? Funny. You gave the Mega Man Legacy Collection a 7, and that didn't even have a graphical upgrade. :|

This might be one of those rare cases where the review scores won’t really sway many people’s minds if at all.

I think it’s fair to say that the majority of people getting this game will be those who already have had some kind of interaction with the Crash series in the past (more than likely the distant past.). As such I think the update in visuals as well as the collection format is more than likely the primary driving force behind their interest. That and a hefty dose of nostalgia.

@videogameninja: I might have played a crash game for 30 mins back in the days at my neighboor. I just see the fun potential and quality in what Ive seen, and its from naughty dog so I can expect even more of a quality product. As a platformer fan I have no doubt Ill get my money worth out of those 3 remastered games, and probably even more fun than I get from most games nowadays.

Obviously take it with a pinch of salt, but I will not complain if it does - I love Crash. I will say that I've disagreed with a lot of gamespots reviews, but it's interesting to read differing opinions.
