Cyberpunk 2077 Devs Is Asking Players Not To Stream Before Official Release

With early copies of Cyberpunk 2077 doing the rounds, CD Projekt Red wants to make sure the game doesn't get spoiled.

Cyberpunk 2077 is finally nearly upon us--read our Cyberpunk 2077 review--with a release date set for December 10, and it's anticipated that some players will get their games early. Between copies that shipped early, retail mistakes, and press/influencer copies, it's possible that information will be out there ahead of launch--and developer CD Projekt Red is asking that anyone with a copy holds off on streaming. It also hinted that videos would be removed if players don't follow this request.

In a tweet on the official Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter account, the devs have asked people not to stream the game ahead of launch--and warned, in their own way, that action will be taken against anyone who does.

Now Playing: Cyberpunk 2077: YOUR Questions Answered!

"We kindly ask you NOT TO stream/let's play, or release similar content before December 9th, 12PM CET / 3 AM PST," the post reads. Otherwise, they joke, in-game organization MAX-TAC will be sent after you (which means, probably, they'll take action to have the video removed or stream ended). It's possible it could also cause players to get a copyright strike.

You can read their full statement below.

Of course, one of the core tenants of the cyberpunk aesthetic is the rejection of authority figures, and rebellion against the powers that be--but CD Projekt Red probably won't listen to that argument if you break this rule and try to make it.

Cyberpunk 2077 will have cool photography options, so it's likely you'll be creating content you want to share. The game is launching on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, and will be playable on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S through backwards compatibility. True next-gen versions of the game will come later. You only have a few days to wait now if you haven't been lucky enough to have your copy show up early. If you're playing on Xbox, you can also pre-install the game, even if you haven't purchased it yet or are going to play it with the disc.

DLC will come for the game, too, but it won't be revealed until after launch.

Screw this self-righteous pretentious spoiler culture!

You don't wanna get spoiled? Stop searching the leaked videos, let rest of the people choose when they get the info themselves.

Honestly! Some people just want to control everyone else's life for their own comfort.

@proceeder: I remember working 3x 12s when sw-fa came out, and really looked forward to some days off and getting to see it. While checking a chest tube drain, late in the morning. the news was playing on the patients tv and the news caster off-handedly mentioned a characters demise. Even the other news caster with a big O on his lip, said 'i do not think you should have said that!" Darn... no biggie. It still took some of the fun away for sure that weekend, and reduced the value of the product I ultimately purchased.

The problem is twitch streamers alone reached 3.8 million early this year, and it does not matter the content only the clicks and views. Which means more and more open with spoil shots or like gamespot above 'gotcha headlines'. Or still frames that are spoilers. I am a grown adult who can easily wait until a game comes out to play it without having to watch streams of it before hand. But like so many that complain, you are seeing it pervade everyones daily life. When navigate your news, work, and everyday content required by life in this modern world, people are finding surprising spoilers in areas they would never expect, like google news for example.

Should the vast majority of paying consumers then hide their heads in the sand in order to obtain the proper value of their purchases, just because millions and millions of streamers need eyeballs and often do not care how they get it. Or Pub/devs who feel their work lost sales or did not see a proper presentation they worked hard to give. Unlike traditional consumer media, that for years have practiced rules regarding newly released material, for not only their viewers but the potential sales of the publisher. We now are in uncharted territory, streamers are not professionals with licenses, no education requirement, often anonymity, and the rules yet written.

So again it is not just leaked videos, but early content spread throughout the internet, social sites, emails, texts, -to the point I would not be surprised to see a guy spinning a sign to buy gold on the corner, along with, "Aeris is killed in FF7, See at my stream and do not forget to like and subscribe." Okay so yeah, the sign is really big.

@proceeder: People go out of their way to spoil things and get it in front of you. Back when Force Awakens first came out, I even saw some asswipe driving around with "Han Solo Dies" scribbled in big letters on his SUV's rear window.

@proceeder: this is not the way. As a society, we are making great strides towards making spoilers taboo, as it should be. People should not feel entitled to ruin the surprise for other people, be it a movie, book, show or game. The behavior of trying to spoil things for people not wanting to be spoiled should be shunned and ostracized.

@proceeder: We don't wanna "control everyone else's life" for "our own comfort." You should not have unilateral rights to do with content as you wish on my space. (My video feeds are my space). I shouldn't have to login to my Youtube recommended feed only for Game Informer (or whoever the hell it was) to ruin the fact that [spoiler character] in [spoiler game] is playable for at least 16 minutes or some shit, by WRITING THAT IN THEIR OWN GODDAMN VIDEO HEADLINE. It's not like I cannot read headlines to know which videos to avoid.

@Jarrkha: If it's that big of a deal to you that you're just going to keep whining about it, then don't access the internet during the week before the release date. Simple as that.

@yankeeallstars: No.

And other people should stop whining about whiners or whining about what CDPR is doing. CD obviously did it to allow Shroud, etc. to get first crack at streaming just around the AUS/NZ region console release ~12 hours ago, and then cast a public-relations shroud (haha) about how they want to prevent people from being spoiled. (If they had really wanted that, the video/stream embargo would have had to be lifted during the final time zone release for consoles, on December 10th, corresponding to when west coasts of North/Central/South America).

And FTR, my Twitter, Reddit & Youtube feeds -- thousands of video game channel subscriptions across all of them -- don't have a single spoiler in the thumbnails or headlines.

@proceeder: Except it isn't that straightforward. Sure someone might choose to not watch the streams, but others will watch it, and then some of those people will start going around to forums and comment sections trying to spoil others about what happens. Or post youtube videos about it that have spoilers in the thumbnail or title which will spoil people regardless of if they click on it or not. I've had multiple games spoiled for me over the years without me ever searching for the leaked content. That's why companies like CDPR try to prevent this, because it isn't as simple as "just don't watch it" and given they just spent years of their lives trying to make this narrative focused game they'd rather as many people as possible be able to enjoy it without having to worry about it getting spoiled before the game is even out.

Or people could just not watch Cyberpunk streams. You can’t watch a stream and expect to have complaints about spoilers be taken seriously.

@YearoftheSnake5: I've had games spoiled for me without needing to watch the streams. People who do watch go around intentionally trying to spoil things on forums and in comment sections. Youtubers post videos with spoilers in the thumbnail and title which spoil people without them ever clicking on the actual video. It's not as simple as "just don't watch the streams". That's why companies like CDPR try to crack down on this. Because it's not a cut and dry case where you can just not watch it and be perfectly fine, and they'd rather people have the chance to enjoy the game at launch without having to worry about getting spoiled about it before the game even launches.

@phoenix1289: i remember even 20 years ago "online shutdown" for a week or 2 after launch was a thing

when cyberpunl is about to release, do you really need to be scrolling neogafs and stranger discords anyway when you should be about to play the game?

i hate spoilelers but there will always be asses, who might not have even played the game but heard a bit of the story somewhere and goes around screaming about it, and a solution for that was invented decades ago

@YearoftheSnake5: Not entirely sure why someone would want to anyway. Like you say it will contain spoilers. Anybody watching it will be diminishing their experience with the game when they do finally play it.

The only games high end pc gamers play is cinebench and heaven, and every other PC gamer is trying to get you to watch their dumbass streams. It is hard to play WoW anymore because someone in the raid needs, a second, because their twitch stream is acting up. And god forbid you say more then hello on discord during a gaming session or they will constantly hit you up to watch their videos on youtube or .. name it. Me and a buddy were playing COD MW pc last year and some tool kept calling us every homophobic insult his little mind developed from his dads DNA spunk , I finally responded to him to STFU- and then he spent the next 10mins asking to follow his stream..... ugh.

I would like for all games to have a semi-time line ban or embargo. For instance, a publisher could fine or remove streams of their games for a certain amount of time after a game has launched -if they wanted to. Say for a couple of weeks or a month - 6 months would make me happy. That way you do not see 'endings' posted literally everywhere you go onto the net. Can you all imagine a game like FF7 from 97' if it came out today -spoiler- the shear amount of Aeris death vids and pics that would deluge every corner of the interweb would be insane.

Some people try to make money off streaming and ... do. But the vast majority of others stream 4hrs of them digging a hole in minecraft or rambling on in ESO about their socks. This is like Facebook, a outlet for the socially handicapped to reach out to others and share their insignificant lives, in a manor that puts an importance on it, that simply is as bland as oatmeal. Meanwhile you have endings to games ruined, spoiled, or worse meme'd to a point that gaming consumers $60-70 purchase now has little value because all of the plot points have no heft. Because they were on youtube watching news videos and autoplay just showed you the 'who done it' to that new RPG game.

Oh BTW check out my stream here of me 'hating on streamers' and also under skirt shots of FF7 remake, Barret only edition.

@jenovaschilld: I have been on PC for all my life and have never run into this problem. I think its quite the opposite, there's only a select group of people that actually stream or want you to watch their stream but most PC players just play games. If you find yourself in a community with a bunch of wannabe streamers, you can just quit that community and find a better one. End of the day it's all up to you whether you want to watch or follow them or not... Avoid Twitch, block, and ignore and move on. It's really not that hard.

@skippert: You are a lucky pc gamer.

But the ability to stream, upload videos, is nearly everywhere, even on 8th gen consoles. According to the findings, Twitch had approximately 7.84 million active streamers in October 2020. https://www.statista.com/statistics/746173/monthly-active-streamers-on-twitch/ And that is just twitch.

But again, I am an old gamer and watching someone else play a game has not interest, if I see a minute or two of COD or an RPG etc ... I would rather just go play it. And I currently follow NO streamer of any kind.

But the problem is ... being able to avoid the non stop incessant requests by others to watch or view theirs. It is easy enough to just -click ignore-. Like WoW community chat or out in the field, general chat is bombarded with addresses to see another's stream- which is often. Easy to ignore and they usually are banned for 30min or something. But say you get into a pick up raid, or join some advanced raid groups, or mythics. There is more freq requests to hold up on a pull so someone could work out the problems with their stream to this or that platform.

Same with just about any game you have to or want to socialize in like say a mMORPG and or if your just bouncing around youtube trying to find a hidden chest, the thumbnail screen is of a main character dying or a gif showing the ending to a game.

I know a of this has been around since the ...internet... of people spoiling content. Like many gamers, it is often times not about the spoilers ... it is the constant bombardment of those needing the attention ... that is the most frustrating.

@skippert: Same on my end. If I have played with a streamer in the past then it was not obvious in the slightest. A rando Discord server may be a different case, but have yet to see anything like the situations jenovas has mentioned.

@Smosh150: Most of the people I speak to on Discord actually use the share function to help others out, to show people within the community how to do certain things. People using discord to stream with the intention to gain large audiences are probably using the wrong software if you ask me ;)

@skippert: I meant not using discord to stream, but when you use discord in MMORPGs during raids, groups, pugs, etc or FPS, etc. it is those soliciting that is the problem. I have no hesitation telling my buddy of 15 years on wow to eat dick if he asks me to watch his twitch or youtube video ... though i doubt he or my guildies ever would.

I find a stranger asking me to watch their streams like someone asking me to see their one person play about their harrowing trip to rural New York or their discovery of jazz. I am good, I got Dragon Quest 11 to play.

@liquiddaylight: Only if referring to the game. If you're referring to the genre, it's not. Also, the non-capitalized use of it in that quote is properly read as an adjective modifying the noun "aesthetic."
