Cyberpunk 2077 "Much Greater" in Magnitude Than The Witcher, Dev Says

The game is "even better, even bigger, even more revolutionary," according to CD Projekt Red.

Speaking today during The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red's latest earnings briefing, management discussed upcoming RPG Cyberpunk 2077 and did not hold back in their enthusiasm for it. According to DualShockers, studio head Adam Badowski said The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt raised the bar, meaning Cyberpunk 2077 needs to be "even better, even bigger, even more revolutionary" than what the company originally set out to do.

Badowski said the game is still "a long ways away" from launch, and further stressed that CD Projekt Red still has "a lot of work to do" to make it a "truly outstanding game."

Now Playing: GS News Update: Cyberpunk 2077 "Much Greater" in Magnitude Than The Witcher

No Caption Provided

The executive went on to say that Cyberpunk 2077 is a "huge game" that has a magnitude "much greater" than The Witcher series. Overall, CD Projekt Red has "amazingly large ambitions" for this game.

To reach this goal, CD Projekt president Adam Kicinski said the studio plans to at least double its headcount, which currently stands at around 400 people. Not all will work on Cyberpunk 2077, of course, as the team members will be split into four distinct groups, some of which will "penetrate new gaming segments," he said.

Cyberpunk 2077 was first announced in October 2012. There have been conflicting reports about when it will launch. One said the role-playing game, developed with the help of board game designer Mike Pondsmith, is not coming until 2017 at the earliest; another, more recent report claimed the title may launch at the end of 2016. The former appears to be true, as CD Projekt said today in its earnings briefing that the game is scheduled to arrive sometime in the 2017-2021 window.

At the end of 2015, Kicinski alluded to the growing ambition of Cyberpunk 2077 and said it needs to be "even more successful."

"The project is even more ambitious than we first planned (...) we need to create a game that will be even more successful," he said on Polish TV station. "We have a long way ahead of us to reach the biggest commercial successes in the world."

At the time, Kicinski went on to say that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was a big success with 6 million copies sold against an $81 million budget. The game was a "good investment," according to CD Projekt Red management, but at the same time, The Witcher 3 was not a worldwide chart-topper for the full year.

"Sure, many people consider The Witcher 3 to be the best game in the world [in 2015], but this is not a game that broke any sales record," he explained.

Cyberpunk 2077 puts players into a "dark future" in 2077 where advanced technologies have become "both the salvation and the curse of humanity." The game promises a nonlinear story designed for "mature" players and is set in the metropolis of Night City. It was also revealed that Cyberpunk 2077 will feature sandbox elements, though this has not been specified.

If every game aims to be bigger than the last in size, some day we'll have games that approach the size of a real continent, and they will take 10+ years to make by thousands of people. And the season pass will cost $1000.

I thought TW3 was big enough. Too big actually. The last thing I would have asked for is something even bigger.

Sometimes less is more. I wish developers didn't make their games primarily for 16 year old kids who can't afford to buy their own games and want each game to last them a whole year until next xmas. Some of us have money but not the time. I love me a good 5 hour game, as long as it's a really good experience.

@lostn: only that the W3 isn't aiming at 16 year old kids in case you haven't heard. And also the W3 got almost all awards at 2015 because it combined quality with quantity. Most times more is less, but not in the W3 and that's why it received worldwide critical acclaim

@Paoksis: If W3's world was the size of Jupiter's entire surface, would you be happier with that, or less happy?

For me, too much of one thing, no matter how good it is, is a bad thing.

It's not a matter of quantity vs quality. You can have both and it would still be too much.. for me.

I would rather play a game that's 20 hours than 200 hours, even if both games are the same quality.. because I just don't have 200 hours.

@lostn: You don't have only 20 hours in your life. You can play 3 hours per week and still enjoy this game. There is no limit. As long as the quality is top, more is better.Nobody forces you to play 10 hours per day.

@Paoksis: That would mean playing this game for a whole year. With RPGs like this I can't do that, nor can I remember the details after taking 5 weekdays off before returning to it. Each week I'm just not feeling any progress being made towards completion.

Only with casual games can I do that.

I'd rather play short games with that kind of free time.

@Paoksis: The longer the game the more invested you get in the story, the world and the characters. Plus RoI is better.

60 dollars for 200 hours of fun > 60 dollars for 6 hours

@Slavadil: As I said, I make enough money that RoI is not a consideration.

Being invested in the story is not a good thing for me if it's going to take that long to finish it. If I can play 3 hour sessions twice a week, I want to play games that are 3-9 hours long, not a game that will take 6 months to finish at that pace.

no, it doesn't need to be "bigger". for christ sakes, games are getting too big for their own good. witcher 3 is overwhelming for the majority of gamers out there as it is. less than 30% of gamers actually complete games they start... witcher 3 is probably far below that average. Make the world interesting, immersive and atmospheric first and foremost. large, empty, cookie cutter worlds don't make games better (fallout, skyrim, etc.). i have never been interested in project red's games, but cyberpunk might be the one squarely because i like sci-fi.

@Xristophoros: According to Steam achievements, 25.5% have completed it. That's pretty high, actually. Dragon's Dogma shows only 21% finishing to the first ending (and that's definitely not really the ending), Risen 3 is about the same. Pillars of Eternity is down at 8.8% and Divinity: Original Sin is at 6%.

Skyrim, a cookie cutter world? That's just crazy talk.

Yeah I don't know, I wish the takeaway lesson from the Witcher 3 wasn't "let's make it bigger", because there were some flaws with the Witcher's world that stemmed directly from it being a tad too large. I still have faith this will be an amazing game, but I really hope they pour their resources in the right places, rather than just making it big.

@lj2387: I don't really take their comment literally as in "bigger" is better.... I take their comment as bigger and more massive in scope. Similar to how Mass Effect originally was gigantic in scope with codexs, books, and references, the Witcher 3 really was massive in scope, with thousands of pages of information (bestiary, love notes, etc.) and hundreds of well-acted cutscenes along with a huge world to explore. Shit, even Gwent was its own self-contained game that was fantastic. That's what I take away from that, not so much gaming world size.

@lj2387: Yeah thats really the only thing that worrys me about this future game.

I do like the energy and commitment CDPR puts into their games but I'm hoping the success of W3 doesn't go to their head and causes them to make mistakes.

I never pre-order any game, but I would happily pre-order Cyberpunk 2077 right now if I could. I've never been so sure that a game I know almost nothing about will be excellent. Also if I ever make enough money, I'm going to buy all the CDPR shares I can and burn them all so there's no chance of a hostile takeover. That's how shares work, right?

As I have grown older I have given up on shallower games and moved towards RPGs so this here is music to my ears, also sci fi appeals much more than medieval(even though Witcher 3 was my favourite game last year).

Downside, 2017-2021 ain't no window. That's a bloody entire building site, meh.

@kyelo: the older I get the more I step away from RPGs, and buy more action FPS games. TW3 is the only RPG I enjoyed and loved playing in the last 6 years or so, before that I liked KH2 on PS2

So its going to be a MMO. Anything that takes this long to finish and on that scale is beyond single player experience while avoiding copy pasta and repetitiveness.

Don't over-extend yourselves, CDPR. A tight gaming experience is better than a bloated one. I don't think anyone looking forward to this game was thinking "gee, I hope it's bigger than TW3!". Make it smaller if you need to - it's all about the quality.

Bigger? OK. Impressive. Better? Shut cho mouth, CDPR! (But I'm just talking about Cyberpunk) I can dig it.

You set the bar very high with Witcher 3, so I'd be VERY surprised to see a game better than it. But if anyone could do it, it would be that team. I have such trust in CDPR, the moment the game is up for pre-order, I'll buy it, without ever using a coupon, directly from GOG.com to make sure the most buck goes their way.

I can understand they're burned out on Medieval Fantasy at the moment, but not only did the Witcher 3 rate very highly to me (92/100), the expansion Hearts of Stone was exquisite; capturing a long since dormant feeling for worth and value I've not seen since the days of actual expansion packs. It was DLC the way DLC should ALWAYS be. Excellent story, characters, quality. The ROI on CDPR products never ceases to impress me.

Curious to see how CD Projekt Red handle gun combat, and how they incorporate it into an open-world game? Can't tell if they're going to go down The Division route considering it's an RPG or GTA route with it (GTA for me handled shooting-mechanics best in an open-world game).. Either way, can't wait!

@dexda: They were talking to their investors not at a press briefing. They need to hype it up to keep them happy. That is kind of how it works when you are a publicly traded company.

Bethesda got away not talking about FO4 at all because Bethesda and their parent company are privately held.
