Cyberpunk 2077 "Much Greater" in Magnitude Than The Witcher, Dev Says

The game is "even better, even bigger, even more revolutionary," according to CD Projekt Red.

Speaking today during The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red's latest earnings briefing, management discussed upcoming RPG Cyberpunk 2077 and did not hold back in their enthusiasm for it. According to DualShockers, studio head Adam Badowski said The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt raised the bar, meaning Cyberpunk 2077 needs to be "even better, even bigger, even more revolutionary" than what the company originally set out to do.

Badowski said the game is still "a long ways away" from launch, and further stressed that CD Projekt Red still has "a lot of work to do" to make it a "truly outstanding game."

Now Playing: GS News Update: Cyberpunk 2077 "Much Greater" in Magnitude Than The Witcher

No Caption Provided

The executive went on to say that Cyberpunk 2077 is a "huge game" that has a magnitude "much greater" than The Witcher series. Overall, CD Projekt Red has "amazingly large ambitions" for this game.

To reach this goal, CD Projekt president Adam Kicinski said the studio plans to at least double its headcount, which currently stands at around 400 people. Not all will work on Cyberpunk 2077, of course, as the team members will be split into four distinct groups, some of which will "penetrate new gaming segments," he said.

Cyberpunk 2077 was first announced in October 2012. There have been conflicting reports about when it will launch. One said the role-playing game, developed with the help of board game designer Mike Pondsmith, is not coming until 2017 at the earliest; another, more recent report claimed the title may launch at the end of 2016. The former appears to be true, as CD Projekt said today in its earnings briefing that the game is scheduled to arrive sometime in the 2017-2021 window.

At the end of 2015, Kicinski alluded to the growing ambition of Cyberpunk 2077 and said it needs to be "even more successful."

"The project is even more ambitious than we first planned (...) we need to create a game that will be even more successful," he said on Polish TV station. "We have a long way ahead of us to reach the biggest commercial successes in the world."

At the time, Kicinski went on to say that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was a big success with 6 million copies sold against an $81 million budget. The game was a "good investment," according to CD Projekt Red management, but at the same time, The Witcher 3 was not a worldwide chart-topper for the full year.

"Sure, many people consider The Witcher 3 to be the best game in the world [in 2015], but this is not a game that broke any sales record," he explained.

Cyberpunk 2077 puts players into a "dark future" in 2077 where advanced technologies have become "both the salvation and the curse of humanity." The game promises a nonlinear story designed for "mature" players and is set in the metropolis of Night City. It was also revealed that Cyberpunk 2077 will feature sandbox elements, though this has not been specified.

I really do wish that devs would be more like Rockstar and not talk about a game until its close to being finished. I've been hearing about this game for 4 years and haven't seen a drop of gameplay. I feel that this tactic can easily backfire on people but whatever

Heh, took me 200 hours to go through W3 with many unfinished quests still, it doesn't need to be bigger than that lol

@Alucard_Prime: If the game is 500 hours of unique entertaining content then what does it matter? It is only a problem when a game over stays its welcome.

Quite frankly Witcher 3 could be three times longer and I'd have loved every second of it.

Sure better than the other trash games that get released every year.

@dexda: For sure, more is usually better, but where do you draw the line, it the game is 1000 hours and takes 1 year to complete, I will miss out on a lot of other games. W3 length is more than enough for me, but that's just my opinion, everyone is different and the W3's length is pretty much my limit.

@Alucard_Prime: If I'm playing a game of Witcher 3's quality for a year I'd say there are better ways to spend your time.

Could be playing crap like The Division instead. Where you play for a year and have NOTHING to show for your time.

' One said the role-playing game, developed with the help of board game designer Mike Pondsmith,'

Once again the same BS by Eddie. Mike is the creator of pen and paper RPGs, not board games! Ffs, do research before writing.

"Are you looking forward to Cyberpunk 2077? Let us know in the comments below!"

My sister recently gave birth to her first son. I love the little rascal. He's playful, well behaved, good-natured and curious.

If necessary, I'd sell him to an international white slavery syndicate to secure the necessary funds to buy and play this game. I mean, it won't BE necessary since I'm a grown up and have a well paying job. I'm just saying that I would if I really had to.

@BeefoTheBold: That's not funny. You should look to local white slavery markets first and foremost before turning to international ones. Be proud of where you live and support the local economy.

...wait a minute.

@alaannn: skyrim is another story, the game is a classic. I see myself playing it someday 10 years from now with tears in my eyes. Fallout 4 is a huge piece of disappointment.

@jguilherme: skyrim ended up completly different to how it launched by the time they stopped doing updates maybe they will get fallout 4 half decent the world is boring and scalled back (the no named settlers in diamond city etc)one of the only good things along with settlement building in fallout 4 is the first person shooting i thought they did a great job on that shame there only a handful of weapons in the game compared to the hundreds there games use to have (skyrim)

Hopefully, they won't downgrade Cyberpunk 2077 like they did with Witcher 3.

@berserker66666: oh, right. high spec PCs (including me with GTX970) struggle to max the game at 1080p even when "downgraded", so maybe there's a reason?

@groowagon: Not exactly. A single 970 can output 60-ish fps with all settings maxed. Also, Some of the modders of W3 managed to do the following without losing any fps. But we all know the real reason for the downgrade, don't we?

can you please tell me how? i'd love to reach that. using 4670K, 8GB DDR3 and 850 Pro SSD to accompany my STRIX 970. i can reach smooth framerate with only half settings on ultra and the rest on high.

@cboye18: I just hope too. But I don't know... the same "medieval depression fantasy" atmosfere Witcher has will be difficult to create again. But... on the other hand: CD Projekt RED - this guys have all my respect.

I actually believe that this will be the greatest RPG ever made. Saying it's bigger and better than Witcher 3 already proves it, and when CDPR says it, i believe them.

And finally in dystopian sci-fi theme! I'm in love already.

@jaygood: Then a delay would be another window that starts at 2022? The main point was the game did not have a release window before, so it's not actually delayed :) Most people on CDPR forums were expecting late 2017/early 2018 anyway, as real work started after they finished working on Witcher 3 (It wasn't THAT big of a company - employee-wise - until the last year of Witcher 3 development or so).
