Cyberpunk 2077 PS5/Xbox Series X Versions Will "Come Later," So Don't Expect Them At Launch

CD Projekt Red has confirmed that next-gen versions of Cyberpunk 2077 are on the table, but we shouldn't expect to see them with the launch of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

Cyberpunk 2077 will indeed be getting separate next-gen versions on Xbox Series X and PS5 in the future, but developer CD Projekt Red has warned fans that they won't release alongside the new systems. Instead, they'll come further down the line, after the consoles have launched, and following the release of the Xbox One, PS4, PC, and Stadia versions of the game.

"In terms of Microsoft's console, like I said, we have officially confirmed both the update and the cross-gen availability, meaning that you'll be able to play the game from the get-go on the next-gen," CD Projekt SVP of business development Michal Nowakowski said, according to Video Games Chronicle. "However, when it comes to a proper, full-blown next-gen version, that's going to come later, we haven't announced when and I don't have a new comment here on that."

Now Playing: What Cyberpunk Red Teaches Us About 2077

Nowakowski also reiterated that Sony hasn't said whether PS5 will support enhanced PS4 games (like Microsoft already has for Xbox Series X and Xbox One) so there's no official word for whether PS5 will be able to play an enhanced PS4 version of Cyberpunk 2077. CD Projekt Red has already confirmed that an update for Cyberpunk 2077 will allow Xbox One users to upgrade to an Xbox Series X enhanced version for free, but the same can't be said for PS4 and PS5 (for now).

"There's no official announcement coming from PlayStation so we really can't confirm or deny anything," Nowakowski said. "It's PlayStation that first needs to address these issues and then we're happy to make a comment, but we can't jump the gun ahead of them."

Nowakowski also confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 is still on track for release in September. There are currently no plans to delay the release of the game.

Seems like the Covid hit made them rethink their priorities, am sure the 6 month delay was to launch the game with the new consoles. If they are pushing back next gen, might mean game will launch on late may/june.

Without the expo shows creating hype about the new consoles, and people getting fired left and right skipping pre orders. Investing time and money on next gen might not paid off this year.

@s1taz4a3l: I suspect, rather, it's because CDPR does it right. They don't just chase $$ without putting in the work to maintain the integrity of their IP. I'm sure it was always planned as a next-gen title, regardless of what they represent. It'd be completely stupid not to. However, they're also not going to release a lazy port. They're going to take the time to learn the system capabilities, optimize it, maybe make certain enhancements, and then release it. Could be wrong, but I doubt it.

@s1taz4a3l: CD Project Red said months ago that Cyberpunk wasn't a next gen game actually. This is just the first confirmation that they plan on making a next gen version at some point.

@tony_miami: I don't see that happening. My bet is that the PS5/XboxSX is just different enough from current gen systems to require some extra time to port.

Hmm this wording makes me wonder if there is going to be a difference between the Series X update and the "full-blown next gen version." The way the statement is worded it sounds you'll be able to play the game on Series X with some updates but it won't be the same as a full blown next gen version. This could change the way people think about Smart Delivery.

@reznik00: The Witcher 3 has it's fair share of big flaws in the gameplay design (be it combat, exploration or role-playing elements), absolutely - But dude, it's side-stories and world are definitely some of the very best in its class. It isn't loved by so many people because of nothing. Even by some of the non-casual gamers that actually care about gameplay depth (because the stories can be so good and world so immersive, even they can overlook the flaws most of the time).

It is a good game at the very least (even Witcher 1 and 2 were). Give credit where credit is due.

@Berserk8989: Witcher 1 and 2 were absolutely terrible sorry. They get more criticism that praise, especially at launch, and especially the second one.

@basketballfan: WTH are you talking about? TW2 has the best story in the series. TW3 has the worst main villain in the series.

I'm going to buy the game on PC and play it with a Nintendo Switch Pro controller, just because I can.

Miss me with this PR nonsense.

PS5 and XBOX series X use the same architecture as PS4 and XBOX ONE why the wait? The assets, textures and sound is already in video game?

Is this Upscaled 4K on PC?

@systemoverload: There is lots to do to get it upgraded for the next-gen.
Textures and geometry can be pushed further for optimization, architecture has some similarities but there's a lot more features to take advantage of (like optimizing load times, which could be a different system altogether), there's probably a better system to allow you to load part of the game to start playing sooner (instead of waiting the full download) which will take dev time to work out, etc.

Unless you don't want a proper, genuine port lol

I'm pretty sure they will release the update for free. Not sure about everyone else if Sony doesn't decide it to be so. All PS4 Pro patches were free and this would be no different. But who knows? Companies are greedy and everything that used to be free starts costing money at some point. Simply because there's always people willing to pay for anything.

@walbo: All PS4 games will be natively backwards compatible on the PS5, as stated by Mark Cerny. So yeah, they did confirm it.

@hardwenzen: Waste of time unless you have a top of the line PC. My 8GB RAM gaming PC I built in 2014 wouldn't cut it for Cyberpunk 2077 I know cause it struggles to run RDR2 yet it is able to Witcher 3 in ultra settings. For the likes of Cyberpunk and next gen I need 16GB or more ram, a new graphics card and a new cpu really.

@hardwenzen: Lol at people jerking off to their PC's specs. And playing games purely for the graphics. But maybe it's the work devices that are still the standard gaming periphery on PCs that make games more enjoyable for some folks there as well. Nothing better than to play a modern game using a keyboard made for typing.

@Atzenkiller: People who play games on the PC use a keyboard and mouse that is purpose built for gaming. Heck, companies who once never made PC related hardware have pretty much gotten in on that very lucrative action.

RGB PC hardware was made for gaming.

Mechanical Switch keys for keyboards is not new tech it was replaced by cheaper, easier to manufacture and easier to clean membrane keyboards.

A lot of so called PC gamer accessories are not worth the price.
