Dark Souls crosses 2.3 million sales

From Software's role-playing game goes double platinum since launch in October 2011.

Dark Souls has sold more than 2.3 million units worldwide since the role-playing game launched in October 2011, developer From Software has confirmed.

Executive director Eiichi Nakajima revealed the sales figure during a recent event in Japan attended by gpara (via NeoGAF).

This figure is up from 1.19 million copies sold as of March 31, 2012, when publisher Namco Bandai revealed Dark Souls sales helped push the company to its strongest fiscal year since 2008.

During its launch month of October 2011, Dark Souls was the sixth-best-selling title in the United States, according to NPD data.

The Dark Souls franchise is set to grow, as From Software is currently working on a sequel for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, though its release date has not been divulged. For more on this title, check out GameSpot's first-look preview of Dark Souls II.

The game is a chore to play. You have to be a really hardcore roleplaying nerd to get through this game. I finished Demon souls and although that was difficult, this one ups the ante. If you are a casual gamer stay far, far away from this one.

It's not about being a "hardcore nerd" at all just patience and studying enemy tactics, sure at the beginning you'll die lots but after you get stuff down your deaths become few and farther apart. In my opinion even if you hate the doing the main story the pvp alone makes it worth buying.

@gill117 Yeah I'm not into games where I have to play the same sections over and over again. That's not fun to me at all.

@gill117 Yeah I liked Demon Souls but I did a lot of soul farming to rank up my character and it made things much easier. I just don't have the patience to do that anymore.

@Doobsac Did you even like Demon souls then lol. That aside I actually quit the game within the first week I bought it, but then I went back and pushed through the first few locations. After that I didn't die for the longest time because after pushing through the initial difficulty things became easy for me, so not much section replaying. But games like dark souls aren't preferred by everyone, so it's fine if you don't find it fun

Best game on the PS3. We need more games that say "Oh, did I hurt you? GOOD! DIE AGAIN!!!! MWahahahaha!"

This game selling well can only mean good things for souls fans. It's also nice to see games that don't need to sell 5 million copies to turn a profit.

I haven't tried Demons Souls but I have beaten DS multiple times and played the DLC. Is it wise to go back and play the old version of the game? Wouldn't I be discouraged because the lack of game mechanics the new one had?

It plays quite different from dark souls that the player and world have tendencies, if you die you lose half your life bar until defeating an area boss, and you don't have bonfires but shortcuts when you've fully explored a worlds section. Also the graphics on demons souls look much more polished. A similar game in most aspects but very different in others. All in all I love them both equally.

@oOhedzOo Demon Souls is widely regarded as the harder of the two. I prefer Dark Souls but if your a fan of the series, play the first.

@oOhedzOo @redness19 I went and bought a PS3 used last summer only to play demons souls. Got a used ps3 with controller and GOW3 for 150$ and it still works like a charm. Also, you can find Demons souls used at EBgames for 10$. The game is just as good as dark souls its the same thing in a different world.

Demons Souls was far more successful than Dark Souls, so why are they making a second Dark Souls? A lot of people consider Dark Souls one of the biggest letdowns of this generation in terms of a sequel.

@bryanj2006 Btw, that's not even true. Demon's Souls had global sales of 1.69 million as of this month. Way to state things as fact without any shred of evidence, though. http://www.vgchartz.com/game/31689/demons-souls/

@bryanj2006 Dark Souls isn't a sequel to Demon's Souls. It's a spiritual successor.

@bryanj2006 - Likely Bethesda employee unhappy with the fact Dark Souls > Skyrim. You must be disappointed that the player in Dark Souls does more than the sign of the cross when fighting compared to Skyrim.

I love Dark Souls. Got Platinum Trophy, On New Game ++, and still going strong. DS2 is my most anticipated game besides South Park for the time being.

This proves video games don't need to be visual roller coaster ride or spending ridiculous amount of money advertising to be successful.

For people complaining about the difficulty, you can even beat the last boss without leveling up, everything is possible as long as you have the pacience to analyze the enemy's movements, the area you have available and learn from your mistakes.

@DarkNeoBahamut When I first played Demon's Souls I died countless times and struggled through the first three levels. then I took a step back and learned a lot about the game and how to play and was able to beat 5 areas in a row without dying one. The game isn't too hard as long as you think about what you are doing.

@Halloll @DarkNeoBahamut Your statement applies to all the games, not just DS. However one thing is to read/watch a guide and other thing is actually do it.

@OuTLaWzGamer As soon as you notice it will use dark magic, use the silver pendant, however, sometimes it happens you use it too soon and the effect ends before the attack it's over, in those cases just use the silver pendant twice in a row.

is it too late if I buy dark souls now? I mean is the community who plays dark souls still crowded? If it's not crowded anymore then it would be boring..

@alwin8695 If you buy for pc it won't be playable until you download some fixes. check the forums. it really is the worst port to pc I have ever played. I think I'll just wait and hopefully the dev does a much better job with pc this time round. That said, it's a great game .

@petez34 @alwin8695 only need a 5mb patch to pick the resolution you want and have a controller for the most fluid controls experience. Then this game is MUCH better on PC.

@OuTLaWzGamer @petez34 @alwin8695 Even without the mod (which takes a couple of minutes to install, look up DSfix) it's still the superior version because it doesn't suffer from choppy framerates in certain sections (Blighttown). After the mod you get to take advantage of better graphics as well. Or get DSMfix and change keyboard binding and you can comfortably play with keyboard and mouse as well. But it really is easier with a controller. You can even summon friends within seconds with DSCfix. No waiting for summon signs to pop up or dealing with failed summonings. It's perfect.

@alwin8695 @TohouAsura Great! Personally Demon's is my favourite, really like the lore and Nexus system, but Dark Souls is a very powerful and enriching experience on it's own.

I warm-heartedly recommend it. If you like Demon's, you'll love Dark.

I bought Dark Souls and Final Fantasy 13-2 on the same day, and talk about your world of differences in difficulty, lol...ff13-2 continues to collect dust, while dark souls is turning me into an insomniac =D
