Dark Souls crosses 2.3 million sales

From Software's role-playing game goes double platinum since launch in October 2011.

Dark Souls has sold more than 2.3 million units worldwide since the role-playing game launched in October 2011, developer From Software has confirmed.

Executive director Eiichi Nakajima revealed the sales figure during a recent event in Japan attended by gpara (via NeoGAF).

This figure is up from 1.19 million copies sold as of March 31, 2012, when publisher Namco Bandai revealed Dark Souls sales helped push the company to its strongest fiscal year since 2008.

During its launch month of October 2011, Dark Souls was the sixth-best-selling title in the United States, according to NPD data.

The Dark Souls franchise is set to grow, as From Software is currently working on a sequel for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, though its release date has not been divulged. For more on this title, check out GameSpot's first-look preview of Dark Souls II.

dark souls is in my opinion the real predecessor to the original castlevania..with its tight gameplay and extreme level of difficulty....(plus the environments and creatures)

Dark Souls and Demon's Souls are, in my opinion, two of the greatest games of this console generation. I'm happy to hear that Dark Souls is having more financial success than it's predecessor, so here's to hoping that Dark Souls II does even better.

Only 2.3 million ? Every gamer on earth needs to play this game . I can't think of a single game more important for the industry than this in the last 5 years.

@faizanhd 2.3 million is a big success for From Software. Dark Souls isn't a big budget game. At least no where near the Halo's and Gears of War with videogame budgets. It has very little voice acting. Limited cut scene animation.

@Stonecutters908 @faizanhd I just hope From Soft doesn't go the route of so many other developers and try to make a game that appeals to a broad audience. I really do enjoy the lack of cutscenes and dialogue and the focus on actually playing the game.

@Sfr528 I don't think they will. They know they have a very passionate fanbase that loves these games for the sheer difficulty and addictiveness they provide.

And JUST as a sidenote, glancing through these comments is refreshing. On seemingly almost every single other article that pops up on Gamespot, you see Feedbackula material, while in this article there is consistently smart conversation about the game...not the usual U SUCK AT GAMS GO PLAY COD. I think it has to do with the game itself...you need more than a modicum of intelligence to fully appreciate a game like Dark Souls.

@goggles123456 You are so right. I have thought quite a bit how a person of low intelligence would never be able to beat these games, or even make it very far. I mean you have to asses your situation and act accordingly. Like think before you act, and stupid people don't do that.

The reason that games like this are so appealing is because they focus on limitation. You don't have super powers. You can't run up walls. You don't have the ability to explode the room with a gesture. No, the Souls series definitely makes you feel quite ordinary, with a slight edge...and then the environment and the monsters and bosses rape your limitations. Remember how mobile some of the bosses in Dark Souls are in comparison to your lumbering, slow, fully armored character? Having the extra protection came at a price. The checks and balances they performed in Dark Souls' design is amazing. Limitation in games, and then finding ways for the player to overcome said limits...that is going to be key in how a video game survives in this current and next-gen of consoles and PCs. Even a game as easy as Skyrim can be made challenging, because at least in that game you aren't forced to take all the super powers. But, many modern titles just baby the player, and I hate it. Worse yet, are the games that make you feel like a spectator, rather than someone participating in a story or a great open world. I felt that in a big way when I played Assassin's Creed...it just felt like I was watching, rather than actively playing. Many modern games don't leave enough room for participation, or they take control away from you with frequent quick-time events. Ugh. A game like Dark Souls, even though it is named thus, is a shining light in the darkness of modern gaming.

@goggles123456 not all hard games are good games because artificially making an absurd difficulty just because is just as bad as a game that is too easy.

Why is this game off gamers radars. I mean im glad they got to 2.3 million, but skyrim which came out a month after dark souls did like 10 million sales in the first year and this game went silent. i ask my friends all the time if they have played dark souls yet and I always get the response "dark what? never heard of it"... but they for sure played skyrim. Was the game to difficult for people or just bad marketing? I dont know but this game deserves 10 million sales.

@GenTaylor84 I know what you say is true, but my sister who is not a serious gamer by any means had heard of Dark Souls. I am sure she heard about it from one of her friends, or friend's husband. I don't know very many of her friends, but I want to meet this person.

@GenTaylor84 It's a brand new IP compared to the established Elder Scrolls games. Not only that the game is designed around a niche audience -- it's most known for being a brutally difficult game. That's what drew in so many new players to the franchise -- they wanted to test their mettle against a game being hailed as one of the hardest of this generation.

@GenTaylor84 This series probably has 1/10th the budget of a single TES game. Demon souls was set to fail until it exploded by word of mouth not advertising surviving server shutdowns because of the increased sales. I'm betting that only half of those people who bought skyrim would even make it out asylum anyways.

@GenTaylor84 Skyrim comes from an old franchise "The elder Scrolls", and Dark Souls comes as a sequel to the ps3 exclusive Demon`s Souls.. so i guess that`s why

@toddx77 2.3 million sales is a lot compared to the production costs. From Software is a small company. You can't look solely on sales numbers, but you have to consider how much money went into production and especially advertisement. Dark Souls wasnt expected to do so well on the western market, so it exceeded both Namco-Bandai's and From Software's expectations, making it a huge success for them.

Considering other games see much higher sales as a failure, I really hope they made a somewhat decent return on this, after all I doubt they spent as much money on it as other AAA games.

@LoganDaDestroya they only see it as a failure in other AAA games as the publishers have a over inflated management line which drain money, plus marketing and an expanded budget for tacked on multiplayer, corporations - great for management but cr*p for everyone else

@chimpdaddy Indeed, that being an issue I feel with modern game development, publishers pumping far too much unnecessary money into the game and expecting massive results beyond the demographic of people who will actually buy the product, thus resulting in efforts to broaden the user base with stuff we commonly see as "dumbing down"

Which is why I'm hoping this was seen as a success, an example where making a great game without too much of the major budgets that go into other AAA games can result in profits even if they are less than what other games can get.

Yeah, at the beginning I went every wrong direction EXCEPT the slightly hidden stairway for about 30 minutes. I was completely stomped by the skeleton graveyard quite a bit. The open world adds some interesting elements like that, and I love it. I'm so playing this game again once I get it back from my friend.
