Dark Souls II director explains "accessibility"

"I think that balance is something important" says Dark Souls II director, but upcoming RPG will maintain the difficulty level of the original.

Dark Souls II director Yui Tanimura has clarified what the development team at From Software means by calling the upcoming sequel to the notoriously difficult role-playing game more accessible.

No Caption Provided

"The reason why we used the word accessible was not to say that the game is going to be easier by any means," said Tanimura to Game Informer.

"We're maintaining the difficulty and we think the challenges are required. What we meant was, there are certain aspects of the game where it didn't really have a direct connection to the sense of satisfaction of overcoming. There were things that were a little bit time consuming or a little bit tedious that we wanted to streamline--sort of carve away all the fat so we could really deliver the lean pure expression of what Dark Souls tries to communicate, which is the sense of satisfaction of overcoming."

"In terms of accessibility, what we meant was a more streamlined experience to deliver the more pure essence of Dark Souls."

Speaking further about the fine line between challenge and frustration in difficult games, Tanimura said, "We try to implement this difficulty for that added level of satisfaction and happiness when you are able to overcome. But there will be aspects of the game where there are some areas that will be more of a pain to get through than others."

"I think that balance is something important. It's hard to answer directly, but we took a lot of care in terms of tuning each instance of the so-called challenges so that we reached an overall good balance throughout the game," concluded Tanimura.

The Dark Souls II demonstration at E3 2013 showed a new boss, The Mirror Knight, which could conjure additional adversaries from his shield.

Dark Souls II will be released for the Xbox 360, PC, and PlayStation 3 in March 2014.

also they should definitely lose the pyromancy flame (from the looks of the demo they did too, since that sorcerer is using his staff/catalyst to cast a fire spell). giving everyone that easy access to magic (and such powerful magic) without building any stats towards magic is ridiculous. i like it in dark souls and use it on a lot of characters, but it's just way too powerful. or maybe not lose the flame but make it behave like a catalyst by giving it magic adjust based on intelligence (or a new stat for pyromancers)

@djb1203 @RaveNRolla The reason pyromancer was so easy is because... it can be fit on every character, you can have an archer pyromancer, a warrior pyromancer, a mage pyromancer.

It didn't need any stats at all, so with a lvl 10 you coudl deal as much damage with flames as a lvl 100.

@RaveNRolla Or at the very least make it a concept of risk/reward. What if pyromancy used health as a resource?

@Fiscaldeal @RaveNRolla Nice idea - pay with health, or at least use endurance like dragon form stuff.

But if they did add a Pyro stat...surely Resistance could be done away with? No. No it can't. No Resistance stat, no buy!

"Say pyromancy takes away health as casting it burns the user in some manner, and fire resistance lessens that."

You're full of good ideas today. I could get behind that...makes perfect sense and gives resistance an actual reason to exist.

@plaintomato Or make resistance benefit pyro. Say pyromancy takes away health as casting it burns the user in some manner, and fire resistance lessens that.

There's definitely merit to giving every character archetype access to magic, it just needs to be governed by its own rule set.

I know this is somewhat irrelevant, but does anyone else keep accidentally signing out of their account when trying to click in the text box to type a comment because of the poor positioning of the user menu that pops down from the top right?

It's really annoying... they need to fix that. X__X

@Flubbbs Agreed. But my money says the reason for the delay to March is to release on all platforms at the same time, and they're just biding their time on the announcement. It's just too stupid not to put it out there on the new consoles - consoles that will have a more limited game selection, where people that otherwise might not buy it could be exposed to this greatness.

Especially when it's being developed for PC, and the new consoles are closer to PC architecture than the 360 and PS3. They'll announce for X1 and PS4.

After finishing the first one, I'm not sure I want to play another. LOL

It was a great game, but... I would have preferred an OTOGI 3. C'mon From Software. Next-gen OTOGI 3, PLEASE.

@orthodox1976 Nooooo! C'mon man, there are plenty of games out there if you want hack and slash button mashing combos. You've got options. Go play God of War May Cry Gaiden 27 or something.

So far, there's pretty much zero options outside of the Souls games if you want the more careful Souls-style combat. Need Souls. And Dark Souls needs imitators and rip-offs ASAP!

@plaintomato Hey, I loved the Dark Souls combat, too. I just wish that the enemies didn't hit so hard! LOL

Otogi was in a class by itself (like Dark Souls/Demon Souls). Not even close to DMC, GoW or Gaiden.

Ninja Gaiden sucks.

Couldn't they find a way to give players an option to play on hard difficulty as it was in darks souls and demon souls while making an easy mode with weaker AI and more handholding for more casual players ? I really don't get it...Haven't other games already done this for years ? I would say that I'm pretty good at games but I don't like to die.Repeating a level is boring for me.I would definitely be interested in dark souls but unfortunately I don't have the time and patience to repeat a boss battle 100 times.

@Sun-Tzu-GE The Souls series has found success by catering to a specific crowd. It is the definition of "not for everyone."

i'm still reading that the game's getting easier tho. tedious experiences are a big part of the game. when dark souls came out i found it pretty much perfect. then they went ahead with all those patches and suddenly the game got a whole lot more handholding for the player. hey, u don't have to loot those lizards and knights anymore, just kill them and u get their stuff. no more "noooo, the lizard fell and i needed that twinkling" which believe it or not was part of the game for me. now it's all like "need twinkling? just buy it at the giant smith" laaaaaame. the game being hard and unforgiving is essential to my experience and farming for a certain titanite is part of that (and remember there is no bladestone anymore, anything can be farmed quite easy using the item ring and sum humanity). nerfing the elemental weapons and fixing the miracle synergy was surely a good move, but everything that makes the game easier in any way made the game less attractive to me. anybody else feel that way?

@vash_xD ye and the fact that the only one who drops it was a freaking dual katana-black phantom ;) (soulsucker!)

but ye totally man, even after all these patches i still like dark souls A LOT. simply because it's unlike everything else u can play. demon's souls was darker and more grim (grimmer?) tho.

I just hope they get rid of that ridiculous soap stone. I want to play with my friend make a party system. That was the only thing I hated in Demon Souls, and Dark Souls. I beat both games, but I hated that my friend had trouble joining me...

@Play-Pretend i don't have any trouble playing with friends at all. just sign somewhere else than where everyone signs. under a staircase or behind a certain wall and not in front of the bonfire. sometimes it takes up to 5 min but once u summoned ur friend once it'll be easier to find him again (if u don't sign out of psn)

@RaveNRolla @Play-Pretend It's a ridiculous system. Sometimes I just want to party up and start adventuring. The last time I tried playing with a friend we spent two hours trying to summon one another to no avail.

The only thing I remember in the gmae that was slightly time consuming and boring, was farming masterials to build or upgrade the weapons to thwe max. And that, I think it should be tedious and time consuming, because getting your weapons to the max is a major part of the hardcore exoperience. Obviously, if everyone is able to get weeapons maxed with ease, part of the charm goes away. Other than that, I don-t see what else was boring and time consuming thst can be cut down without indering the gameplay.

The only thing I would have "fixed" is the multiplayer proportion. I wouldn't lock out party mode, and give the players freedom to co-op the entire experience without all of the technical crap interfering.

Those were my only gripes, though it hardly hindered my experience as I loved NG+ that game all the way to 5-8 more times.

I wish more games featured a NG+, as it really opens the game up for massive amounts of replayability.

DS2, Battlefront and MGSV are most anticipated games.

I think hes missed the point. The tedium was a big part of the difficulty and frustration in Dark Souls. It wasnt just about the immediate satisfaction of defeating a tough boss, but also dat feel of finding a shortcut, which made it much easier to reach a destination. Finding a shortcut for the first time in Dark Souls was the most meaningful and satisfying experience i had throughout the entire game.

@Prats1993 Wouldn't it be better if the developers could focus the difficulty towards other aspects of the game, or find new challenges? Tedium is a part of Dark Souls, but is it a part of what makes it fun?

@Fiscaldeal @Prats1993 I think it somewhat has to do with the fun. You can't have pleasure without pain, joy without sorrow and excitement without tedium The opposite always has to exist so you know the other by contrast.

@Prats1993 Yes. Super Meat Boy was a masterpiece and in terms of its difficulty is actually much harder than either Souls game but lacks any form of punishment. This game goes for a completely different sensation than a Souls game does. SMB boils down to capturing a level into muscle memory. Dark Souls doesn't get boiled down that level at all; instead it is about making clever inferences and since you have punishment on the line it lends itself a particular intensity and sensation of fear. Both games are flawless at capturing exactly what they intend to do.

Super Meat Boy was one such game. Rather than having lives and long levels, the levels were kept short and no lives were at stake. This meant a lot of the frustration was alleviated (at least for me) because u never felt like u lost progress.

@Naylord @Fiscaldeal @Prats1993 I've played games where this dichotomy doesn't exist due to thoughtful design, and my enjoyment of the experience was better for it. I believe there are creative solutions to combat tedium without destroying the experience.
