Dark Souls II to feature more open-world elements than original

Dark Souls II director promises open-ended structure and says players "could even start halfway through the game, depending on how willing or how brave they are."

Dark Souls II will feature more of an open world than its 2011 predecessor, developer From Software has said.

No Caption Provided

"Freedom of exploration is something we want to prioritise for Dark Souls II, even more so than Dark Souls 1," said director Yui Tanimura in an interview with Digital Spy.

One goal for Dark Souls II is for the player to have more "freedom to explore," adds Tanimura. "We realise in Dark Souls there were some certain orders, like ringing the bells or going to Anor Londo, which is not necessarily a bad thing."

In Dark Souls II, From Software is hoping for the players to have enough freedom that "things don't have to necessarily be done in a certain order."

"We're hoping that if the player tries hard enough, or are willing enough, they could even start halfway through the game, depending on how willing or how brave they are."

"You won't have to follow a certain line, it will be unique for all players, I think," concluded Tanimura.

Dark Souls II will be released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in March 2014.

I hope sincerely, the developers don't change the archaic for of speech delivery from NPC's!!! It really suits the world and , and indescribable feeling of loss and depth to the game. Simply suits it perfectly.!!!

@radikel Dark Souls has lousy voice acting and some terrible dialogue. This is an area that absolutely needs improvement in the sequel. What are you talking about?

@RAD_RADIO @Palantas @radikel I'm playing now for the first time (love this game) and I like the voice acting. Although, if the dialogue was improved & they would actually move their lips/make gestures while they talked - it would be better.

@RAD_RADIO @Palantas @radikel Because you like a game, it does not follow that every single element of it is executed well. If Dark Souls has great voice acting, then what's a game with bad voice acting? Does one even exist? The crestfallen warrior's voicework is so lousy, I'm pretty sure I could do a better job. A whole mess of Dark Souls NPCs needed someone yelling "Again, but with feeling this time" while their voice actors sat in the studio. There's this thing called inflection that you encounter when talking to people, in say Mass Effect, that could have helped at least half the NPCs in Dark Souls.

Besides the tepid voice acting, the dialogue is often nonsensical or obtuse. A guy said to me once "I can share some spells with you if you'd like...unless you find magic unsavory that is." The game prompts "How do you respond?" with the options "Yes or No." Okay...am I answering to "Can I share some spells?" or "Do you find magic unsavory?". Which question am I answering? That's important to know, since they have opposite meanings. The two previous times this has come up, I picked "Yes" to get what the NPC had to offer. "Yes" is a positive response, so I just assumed that was the right choice. But no, of course not. In this case, I was actually saying "Yes, I find magic unsavory." WTF?

Later on, I meet that fat cat, Alvina, who says to me, "Is it not so that thou art new? Thou fared well to find me. But cometh thee not for the grave of Sir Artorias? My advice true, forget this! The legend of Artorias art none but a fabrication. ...Traversing the dark? 'Tis but a fairy tale. Have thine own respect, go not yonder knocking for nothing, I say!" Then I get that ridiculous "What is your response? Yes. No." What the hell am I answering yes or no to? This is not cleverly written dialogue. This is dialogue written by someone who is trying to sound smart. In other words, about any of some tens of thousands of people on roleplaying servers in MMOs could have written this.

Good dialogue in a game, A.) Drives the plot, providing motivation to the player, B.) Gives information about the game world, C.) Creates NPCs with depth who emotionally involve the player, and D.) Is witty, insightful, or otherwise enlightening to the mind. Dark Souls dialogue rarely does any of this.

Hmm, iam not sure about that. But in any case, i was referring more to the style of dialogue delivery, by using the archaic form of english. By all account DkS-2 is a prequel, so this style should fit even better.

this and even the first dark souls should be considered on the wii u. the second screen would be really helpful for inventory management since you can't pause mid game and do this. this would help prevent you from getting invaded and stabbed in the back when you're trying to get rid of all those broken straight swords you've collected.

Remember the first time you wandered out of Firelink Shrine, ran through the graveyard and into the Catacombs, and was like why the F do these skeletons keep getting back up!! One hour in I knew I was retarded for making fun of RPGs, one day in and I knew it was the best game I had ever played. Mmmmmm, Dark Souls.

@MAL1C3_Inc I think I made it all the way to the blacksmith (running) before realizing that I was seriously lost and I had 500 skeletons chasing me.

The damn wheels at the bottom is what gets me. Standing by a wall and then jumping out of their way at the last minute is fun but way to stressful.

Some new info that came out of E3 that you guys might not have heard (I don't think GS reported it): 3 weapon slots per hand; backstabs do not provide invincibility frames; sorcery now has r1 (normal) and r2 (strong) casting versions; some shields will incorporate built-in talismans.

I linked to the source vid on Youtube below, but GS won't publish it - 'pending' for over a day now (it's on VaatiVidya's channel if you're interested). Seriously GS, if you're going to insist on vetting links, then you know, actually vet them.

@G4m3r0uTL4wZ As far as I understand it, there are no class specific abilities, just different starting stats and equipment (like in Dark Souls). Every character should have 3 slots per hand, be able to dual wield, etc. with only stat requirements limiting access to spells and weapons.

I may have misunderstood, but given that one of the earlier trailers shows the warrior dual wielding, I'm pretty sure the mechanics are universal. I don't think From is interested in 'locking' players into a playstyle based on class (they even said they wanted to add more flexibility in customization), and it would be nightmarish to balance for pvp, so I wouldn't worry too much.

This sounds like a great addition on the surface. I loves me some freeform exploration. I just hope this doesn't mean that a "warping" ability is being promoted over other means of travel. It has already been revealed that the ability to warp will be enabled early on in the game.

My opinion may be in the minority, but I liked the chore of humping around areas without using bonfire warp. In my first playthrough I was in such a black funk in the depths of the Tomb of the Giants in Dark Souls without that lordvessel, it magnified the magical immersive misery of the endeavor.

Being able to start halfway through the game will end up being a GameStop pre-order exclusive.

The only way I am going to start halfway through is on my first playthrough. If I don't I'll already know what to expect and that may water it down a bit. That would be pretty cool to save the first half for your second playthrough but I don't know if I have the gall to attempt it. Either way, I am going to enjoy the shit out of this game.

im too freaking excited! Just add friend invites and more balance for pvp (make gankers be debuffed when they summon someone, etc.) and ill be set. My only complaint is that it should be for ps3 and ps4. Now i have to keep my ps3 just to play DSII

I'm glad that you enjoyed the PVP, I never even really consider it to be honest.

Dark Souls was always a single player thing for me, the PVP was straight up broken. All of it was just too random.

As my roommate put it , it turns an awesome adventure game into a crappy fighter. But hey, to each his own.

When you get to the end does the castle go upside down?

I'm really surprised Konami don't model Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2 on this because to me this game is in turn modelled on Symphony of the Night in terms of exploration and advancement

Yes, your observation is correct. It is a modern day Castlevania.

And would you believe it, Lords of Shadow 2 is going to be based on that style.

@SrebX @Romeric87 Agreed. I haven't noticed too much of a difference either. Dark Souls featured a large, connected world that you could try to move around through out of order as well. It just sounds like they'd like to do it on a larger scale this time. The combat looks similar but even deeper, the challenge is definitely there, and the animations are smoother. Nothing to complain about there.

@pecky43 Well, it wasn't truly necessary for the info on the warrior souls seeing how there's an infinite number of souls to obtain in the game. But the weapon scaling was not clear at all and the way I learned about it was by looking it up on the good ole' internet.

@pecky43 @Rayzakk Oh internet access to a good FAQ was almost a must. Just imagine my disappointment in starting a game, running to the catacombs to get the gravelord sword but forgetting to get that Eye of Death behind that demon because a lot of things aren't explained only to try and get it and be smacked down.

Dark Souls 2 is the reason I'm not buying a next-gen console at launch. There's no point because once DS2 is released, I won't be thinking about playing anything else for a long time. See you all for some jolly co-operation. Praise the Sun!
