DC's Suicide Squad Reshooting to Lighten Tone, Following Batman v Superman Criticisms - Report

Joker to get more jokes.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice might currently be conquering the box office, but it hasn't exactly been a hit with critics. One common complaint is the film's lack of humour, especially in comparison with Marvel's more light-hearted superhero adventures. It has now been reported that Suicide Squad, the next film in the DC cinematic universe, is undergoing last minutes reshoots to lighten the tone.

No Caption Provided

According to BMD, DC's parent company Warner are spending "tens of millions of dollars" to add some more comedic elements, with reshoots happening at the moment. The site quotes a source as stating that although the trailer for the film contained quite a bit of humour, "every joke in the movie is in that trailer." The reshoots are reportedly to increase and lighten the interactions between characters.

Suicide Squad is directed by Fury's David Ayer, and tells the story of a group of death row supervillains who are employed covertly by the US government to perform dangerous missions, in return for reduced prison sentences. It stars Jared Leto as Joker, alongside Will Smith as Deadshot, and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.

Last month, it was rumoured that even though the film doesn't open until August, a sequel was already in development. Variety's Justin Kroll reported that he had "been hearing for awhile the studio wants this sequel up as quickly as possible and that they also want all players back including Ayer."

Suicide Squad hits cinemas on August 5, 2016.

So the movie that's supposed to be dark is getting funnier, and the movie that should be a fun popcorn flick is getting an R-rated director's cut. DC/Warner are genuinely terrible at this.

@fmobliv06: The last movie I remember getting re-filmed to make "lighter" was Mortal Kombat 2... And it turned into a pile of dog filth. The original has still never been released.

I never agree with critics, this is absolutely ridiculous. At least offer the original as an option.

B vs S for some reason was based on a fanatical relegious theme ... dont know much about SQ, aside the obvious racism and beating a women directly in the face ...

I'm usually against reshoots, but comic book hero movies are always better with more jokes.

People , it's been proven ; adding some silly humor to a movie helps to maximize the profits amassed.

It's also proven people are prone to watch it more than once if you add stupid jokes.

What it means : because of stupid people, you get stupid movies

Was Watchmen popular? It was not. Was it great? It was.

@xolivierx: Watchmen was actually a good movie, BvS was not.

There are tons of superhero movies that are dark and have very little humor, for example Nolan's Batman trilogy. It still did very good at the box office and with critics because they were genuinely decent-good movies!

BvS was not a good movie by any aspect. It has a nonsensical plot, awful script, terrible villains, mostly a CGI fest that most people have already seen numerous times, too long of a running time and it took itself way too seriously when it shouldn't have. That's why most critics disliked it.

BvsS is tearing up the box office, it just goes to show how utterly worthless critics really are. It seems they don't actually try to review movies anymore, they try to predict how they'll do and base their review around that. Glad that BvsS is essentially giving reviewers the middle finger.

Fuckin' critics, pull your heads out of your asses. Shame the makers of the film are giving in to the criticisms, just like with Batman Vs Superman though, I hope the proper version is released as a director's cut or something.

Too much hate and butt hurt in these comments from the Marvel crowd. I'm sorry that the DC movies are too grown up for you to enjoy. I love Marvel movies myself, but the DC hate train is ridiculous.

@chaosbrigade: Fortunately as many people like you that hated it as there are, there are people that loved it like me and understood what is going on.

Maybe understood is not the right word. Maybe see the movie from another angle that allows us to enjoy the movie.

Reshoots are scheduled months if not scheduled at the beginning when actors are signed so they can schedule accordingly. This happens with most major studio movies and is being very over blown.

BvS was a dissaster but mainly because of it's huge screenplay issues, not so much the "dark" tone.

@Abomination713: I'll agree it has a few problems, but it's not nearly as bad as people like you make it out to be. The movie had a great plot. You just want a mindless action flick like the Force Awakens which sucked royally.

Also, I don't care about the Metal Gear games.

@psx_warrior: Ummm whhhat?? BvS has a great plot? LOL did you even watch the movie?

The reason that Batman and Superman even fought in the first place made absolutely no sense. Lex Luther was trying too hard to be Joker. Superman was played horribly wrong and miscasted. Wonderwoman served absolutely no purpose in the movie besides to set up the Justice League movie.

Doomsday was sent in just so Zack Snyder can be a lil kid in a CGI production playground blowing everything up, once again.

Take this with the grain of salt. This article cites an article that could be an April Fools joke, but more importantly the original article cites "an excellent source" and then "more sources" so even if it weren't a joke, it would still be questionable.

April Fools everyone. Suicide Squad had reshoots planned since BEFORE Batman v Superman for reasons that have nothing to do with adding jokes. The Killer Croc actor has to reshoot a few scenes. It's something very common in movies but they're certainly NOT changing the entire tone of the film mere months away. Especially in response to ''critics'' when fan critics are mainly positive and the movie broke every superhero box office record... Don't take any ''big'' news today seriously.

This doesn't make sense of me. Wouldn't you expected a movie focused on villains to be darker and less funny than the one centered on the superheroes?

I keep waiting and hoping for the, "April Fools!" portion of this article. Man WB sucks at this whole superhero on the big screen thing. The tone of BvS was one of the things that movie actually got right...

The dark tone has not been mentioned once as a problem with Batman V Superman. I have heard lots of other critiques but most people liked the darker Batman and mentioned that as being the good part of the film.
