DC's Suicide Squad Reshooting to Lighten Tone, Following Batman v Superman Criticisms - Report

Joker to get more jokes.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice might currently be conquering the box office, but it hasn't exactly been a hit with critics. One common complaint is the film's lack of humour, especially in comparison with Marvel's more light-hearted superhero adventures. It has now been reported that Suicide Squad, the next film in the DC cinematic universe, is undergoing last minutes reshoots to lighten the tone.

No Caption Provided

According to BMD, DC's parent company Warner are spending "tens of millions of dollars" to add some more comedic elements, with reshoots happening at the moment. The site quotes a source as stating that although the trailer for the film contained quite a bit of humour, "every joke in the movie is in that trailer." The reshoots are reportedly to increase and lighten the interactions between characters.

Suicide Squad is directed by Fury's David Ayer, and tells the story of a group of death row supervillains who are employed covertly by the US government to perform dangerous missions, in return for reduced prison sentences. It stars Jared Leto as Joker, alongside Will Smith as Deadshot, and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.

Last month, it was rumoured that even though the film doesn't open until August, a sequel was already in development. Variety's Justin Kroll reported that he had "been hearing for awhile the studio wants this sequel up as quickly as possible and that they also want all players back including Ayer."

Suicide Squad hits cinemas on August 5, 2016.

Nothing can save this movie let alone a misunderstanding of criticisms for other movies.

Here's the thing-yes BvS was dark in tone, but that's not why is sucked. It sucked because the plot was a mess and didn't make any sense, the characters had little motivation (mainly lex) and it was too long.

I hate these studios identifying the wrong reasons things succeed or fail. It's the same as all the talk of R rated superhero movies after Deadpool. Deadpool didn't succeed simply because it was R rated. It was funny, light, and relatively unique to the superhero genre.

This is probably a good idea.

The thing DC films don't seem to understand is that unrelenting darkness and seriousness is UTTERLY MEANINGLESS and dull without moments of levity or happiness or sorrow or *something* to break up the boring slog of uber-macho, tough-man, isn't-it-all-so-cool Nolan-esque stuff. BvS has no tonal variation, no subtlety, no depth of character, it's just dark, macho and juvenile.

Obviously I'm not saying that superhero films need to be colourful comedies, but, like comics, there has to be some tonal variation, partly to show what the "heroes" are fighting for, put partly to prove that there are real, complex individuals functioning behind all the violence and excuses-for-violence.

That's just plain stupid. Why abandoning a thing that you thought will be good? Only idiots care about what critics say. Panning "lack of humor"? Maybe because it's not MUST-HAVE feature in films. And from trailers I thought Suicide squad got TON of humor and funny moments. Please, don't be like shitty marvel films appealing only to masses.

@bioswat: well like the article said apparently every joke from the film was put into the trailer so the "TON of humor and funny moments" have already been shown and spoiled.

I really hope the movie is darkly funny, sort of like Ledger's Joker.

Bad if it's true, they should just stick to their original vision and not try to copy Marvel. If they needlessly shoehorn humour it will be jarring.

i could actually see this happening... even if it is a joke, i won't be surprised if behind the scenes they do change the mood a bit. all thanks to the disney marvel children who are too immature to handle a film like batman v superman. you people are the worst and ruining it for the rest of us. now they gotta make sure there is a stupid wise crack every 20 seconds and nobody dies on screen like in the marvel movies... ah, and certainly there cannot be a drop of blood, we don't want the 7 year old's in the audience to worry.

No! Don't do this! A superhero movie doesn't have to be funny. I hate Marvel movies for that! The Dark Knight trilogy was not funny. ..

@Die_Bahn: I should blame them , especially when they are 100% wrong. Not only is this movie not humorless , it quality does not hinge on the tone. Nolan's movies where humorless and dark yet they are consider great, which they are.

@Prats1993: wrong, almost all critics complained more about the tone of the movie than the actual story and how humorless it was. Which it was not. I can recite every funny line in the movie and there quite a few. Is the movie a turd? yes. Is it because the dark tone? no.

Also funny how you mention Nolan's films when the only reason they had any amount of humor in them is because of the joker. Nice way to contradict yourself pal.

The humor is the worst part about the marvel movies. I cringe everytime they try to be funny. I for one, prefer the darker and more serious tone of the DC movies. I quite enjoyed BvS.

@Prats1993: critics don't know shit, they often say they're speaking for people yet it is impossible to do exactly that for a start. They offer an opinion and often burn a lot of decent films because the cattle can't judge for them selfs. Same is happening to games the mindless drones who rely on someone else's views rather than judging for them self often get led a stray because of someone's constant burning.

If I go into a library, I know what I'm interested in reading, from subjects to history and so on. I made my own mind up through the decades I have been alive, found out my own interests,. I didn't need the librarian or someone who read the book I'm about to choose to give me an opinion and spoiling every bit of content within that said book.

@xzerocarnagex: I don't think you understand. Critics read so many books at the library that they know the tropes and usually look for something new and refreshing. If critics are the devil, how do you explain the critics that LIKED Batman v Supes? You still going to tell me critics are shit? Doesn't your opinion make YOU a critic?

@Prats1993: Anyone can be a film critic. It's not necessary to understand how to MAKE a film. Why would you even think that they know more than anyone else? All they do is give their own personal opinions. I've watched hundreds of movies as well.

@notchedbandit: It's not about knowing how to make a film, lol. It's knowing how to write about films, and making a discernment between a good film and a bad one based on its cinematic qualities. Most people can't do that, which is why films like Tranformers make so much money at the box office.
