Dead Space Remake Announced, Developed By EA Motive

EA's survival horror series returns on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, with the full remake taking us back to the horrifying saga of the USG Ishimura.

After weeks of rumors about a potential revival of the Dead Space series, we've finally learned of what's next for the survival horror franchise, and it is indeed a full remake of the original game. Announced during the EA Play 2021 live stream, the Dead Space remake--releasing on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S--will take us back to the USG Ishimura, focusing on Issac Clarke's harrowing descent into a decaying space station filled with mutated monsters known as necromorphs.

Developed by EA Motive, the same team behind Star Wars: Squadrons and Battlefront II's story campaign, the short teaser showcased the familiar, derelict halls of the ruined spaceship, with a lone necromorph in the distance readying for an attack. The remake is being made with the Frostbite engine, which is the same tech used for the Battlefield and Star Wars Battlefront games. According to the press release, the remake will be offering "improvements to gameplay, while staying true to the original." In the teaser revealed during the show, we saw some callbacks to environmental details from the original game, with the words "Cut off their limbs" written in blood on the station's halls. We also got to see a final tease of the protagonist Issac Clarke, who restores his health at one of the ship's workstations.

Now Playing: Dead Space Remake Teaser Trailer | EA Play Live 2021

In an official press release, EA Motive senior producer Phillippe Ducharme stated that this revisit will modernize the original game for current-generation platforms, with the hope to reinvigorate the series for new and returning players alike.

"The Dead Space franchise made a huge impact on the survival horror genre when it was released 12 years ago, and I came to Motive as a fan first to specifically work on this game," he said. "We have a passionate team at Motive who are approaching this remake as a love letter to the franchise. Going back to the original and having the opportunity to do so on next gen consoles excited everyone on the team. As we look to modernize the game, we've reached out to dedicated fans and invited them to provide us with feedback since the early stages of production to deliver the Dead Space game they want and for new players to enjoy as well."

Though general details about this game are light as of this time, and the EA Play stream ended before we could learn anything else about it, GameSpot has confirmed from the press release and from an EA spokesperson that this will be a full remake of the original game, and not a direct remaster. So while this will still follow what we know of the original 2008 game, there will likely be some new surprises in store for this upcoming iteration. The original Dead Space trilogy was developed by Visceral Games, which was shuttered in 2017 following the cancellation of its Star Wars action-adventure game. So it is exciting to see its work live on in this full remake for current gen platforms, and the creator of Dead Space, Glen Schofield, stated on Twitter that he was excited to see what's to come with the game. It was also revealed that former Visceral Games design director Dino Ignacio has been working with EA Motive as a consultant on the remake.

Along with the reveal of the Dead Space remake, we also saw the announcement of Battlefield 2042's new Battlefield Portal mode, which brings different armies from across time together in large-scale battles, along with a showcase of Lost in Random's take on turn-based RPG combat.

Honestly, they've pulled the "No MTSx promise! Trust us this time-- no really!" way to many times for me to even remotely bother getting hyped about anything coming from these guys anymore.

If I remember it, I might give it a look about a year after release so they'll have had any chance to throw in any predatory MTXs and/or screw up the gameplay and/or maybe patch out the majority of the bugs if/when they ever manage to get around to fixing them.

Otherwise? I'm still kind of in a world of not caring. Shame too, I loved the originals but, guess they've ruined this franchise just as surely as they've ruined so many others over the decades. smh.

You can play Dead Space right now if you really like it. I play it at least once a year cause its one of the best games ever made. This is the remake only Gamespot asked for.

Not quite. An article was posted just 2 days ago saying this:

@Epak_: I'm not holding my breath tbh.

EA has lied about MTXs, released bug-ridden and broken messes and just flat out closed companies that were developing awesome-sounding titles so many damned times that I have been in "I'll-believe-it-when-I-see-it" frame of mind when it comes to anything they do and/or say for years now.

As sadly hyper-cynical as that attitude may be: when it comes to EA-- it's saved me a lot of heartache over the years so, rather than try to shake myself out of it, I've just taken to recommending it as a sanity-saving stance when dealing with reports/statements from/about EA. lol.

I doubt they really can mess it up, a single player horror title... MTX? Not interested, so doesn't concern me. They could put something important behind a paywall, but why? Was the game so popular you'd risk sales by doing something so stupid? They could release it riddled with bugs, but... yeah we'll see. Maybe they'll do all of that :D

@dlist4ever: I feel the exact same way about this as you do. I'm still miffed about the cancellation of the revamp of Anthem for example that they kept promising as that game was fun for awhile and I was really looking forward to the revamp but alas EA once again promised and didn't deliver. I also hate them for the fact they buy up studios and they shut them down and do absolutely nothing with the IP's they gather in the process. Looking at you Westwood and Command and Conquer.

@ironhorse89: Honestly, Bioware didn’t help itself by spreading itself thin with the concurrent development of both Mass Effect Andromeda and Project Dylan (AKA Anthem), as I feel both games would’ve benefitted from having all hands on deck in their development, even if it meant delaying the development and release of one of them in favor of giving the other one the proper amount of polish that was so clearly lacking at release.

Never got a chance to play it so, lucky me. Whenever I hear remake though I expect it to be of the same quality as Demon’s Souls so hopefully they know what they’re doing.

@tingtong: It's EA. Of course they know what they are doing. They hire teams of the best engineers and artists.....

...only for upper mgmt to jerk them around with multiplayer modes, and gaas features until they either quit or their fired.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@s1taz4a3l: They're saying they've totally rebuilt it in a new engine, with new areas inspired by the original game. It sounds closer to RE2's remake (if RE2 were half as old) than a re-release.

I am not excited about the remake but will not trash it and when it comes out I will judge it at that time and see if it is worth buying it. Remasters, Remakes are now an trend and some do derserve it to see how it will play today versus yesteryear and can they do more with the game that was not possible years ago.

@phili878: A remaster would've been better as the game is still perfectly playable as is and most things would have been left intact. But a remake with EA's incompetence? Yeah, having low expectations is required.

@santinegrete: Frostbite engine has issues with open-world RPG game design, not linear game design. It should have no problem with Dead Space.

This is such a slap in the face to fans and Visceral.

They don't allow Visceral a sequel to DS3. They move them on to other projects. Dismantle Visceral. Then, a few years later reboot the series. Ouch.

I've never seen a company so indecisive and act against it's own properties and employees like, EA. I mean, I get it... shareholder happiness and money is their game and everyone knows their CEO's make some big bucks, but you can't keep a dependable business model, good employee relationship, and valued customer relationship if the Electronic Arts name and everything within it is entirely expendable. Even Disney figured them out.

This reboot feels more like, a money grab than answering fans who've been bitching for almost eight years. So, I don't know about anyone else, but I'm going to need more than a throwback looking teaser and the Dead Space name to even trust this. I mean, they killed Andromeda instead of improving on it to make ME4. The Star Wars fiascos. Jedi Fallen Order that they didn't care enough to make more content for. Yeah, I'll reserve for later.

@danyaelzero: Yeah the the thing with Andromeda is specially unfortunate. I could tell a lot of effort did go into that series contrary to what many believe, but a segment of EA just sucks massively.

By the way have you seen the trailer for The Callisto Protocol? That’s actually Dead Space successor.

Nice.

To keep the tension up,please dont use exactly the same enemy placement so the veterans have more fun too.

With that said,i hope its not a full priced game...not ready to give more than 40€ for the remake

@blaznwiipspman1: Possibly not. But I'm not against it if it's actually well done and helps bring the franchise back to life. Whether that will be the case is debatable. Lets just wait and hope.

As you say though, they really need to have amazing graphics in the finished product to justify this fully.
