Dead Space Remake Announced, Developed By EA Motive

EA's survival horror series returns on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, with the full remake taking us back to the horrifying saga of the USG Ishimura.

After weeks of rumors about a potential revival of the Dead Space series, we've finally learned of what's next for the survival horror franchise, and it is indeed a full remake of the original game. Announced during the EA Play 2021 live stream, the Dead Space remake--releasing on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S--will take us back to the USG Ishimura, focusing on Issac Clarke's harrowing descent into a decaying space station filled with mutated monsters known as necromorphs.

Developed by EA Motive, the same team behind Star Wars: Squadrons and Battlefront II's story campaign, the short teaser showcased the familiar, derelict halls of the ruined spaceship, with a lone necromorph in the distance readying for an attack. The remake is being made with the Frostbite engine, which is the same tech used for the Battlefield and Star Wars Battlefront games. According to the press release, the remake will be offering "improvements to gameplay, while staying true to the original." In the teaser revealed during the show, we saw some callbacks to environmental details from the original game, with the words "Cut off their limbs" written in blood on the station's halls. We also got to see a final tease of the protagonist Issac Clarke, who restores his health at one of the ship's workstations.

Now Playing: Dead Space Remake Teaser Trailer | EA Play Live 2021

In an official press release, EA Motive senior producer Phillippe Ducharme stated that this revisit will modernize the original game for current-generation platforms, with the hope to reinvigorate the series for new and returning players alike.

"The Dead Space franchise made a huge impact on the survival horror genre when it was released 12 years ago, and I came to Motive as a fan first to specifically work on this game," he said. "We have a passionate team at Motive who are approaching this remake as a love letter to the franchise. Going back to the original and having the opportunity to do so on next gen consoles excited everyone on the team. As we look to modernize the game, we've reached out to dedicated fans and invited them to provide us with feedback since the early stages of production to deliver the Dead Space game they want and for new players to enjoy as well."

Though general details about this game are light as of this time, and the EA Play stream ended before we could learn anything else about it, GameSpot has confirmed from the press release and from an EA spokesperson that this will be a full remake of the original game, and not a direct remaster. So while this will still follow what we know of the original 2008 game, there will likely be some new surprises in store for this upcoming iteration. The original Dead Space trilogy was developed by Visceral Games, which was shuttered in 2017 following the cancellation of its Star Wars action-adventure game. So it is exciting to see its work live on in this full remake for current gen platforms, and the creator of Dead Space, Glen Schofield, stated on Twitter that he was excited to see what's to come with the game. It was also revealed that former Visceral Games design director Dino Ignacio has been working with EA Motive as a consultant on the remake.

It's too dangerous to explore new ideas. People might get offended or hurt. Better remake old things.

@DeadlyMustard: No. But hey, it's a safer bet. I'm conflicted between that and that we finally get a Dead Space game.

While the original Dead Space doesn't NEED a remake per se I would be lying if I said I wasn't excited at this news.

In fact I know it is the "cool thing" to hate on EA (and for good reason in many cases.) but I have a feeling something like this would be a day 1 purchase for me.

The original Dead Space filled that survival horror gap that seemed to suddenly be vacant once the resident evil franchise decided to go more "action based" with Re4/5/and 6. It's no wonder it has still amassed such a cult following even all these years later. In fact, I have a feeling EA is using this remake as a "test the waters" title to see if there is still any interest left in the franchise.

That being said, I for one am most interested in how they will be adding more in the way of story elements to the original as, let's be honest there really wasn't much there, as well as the visuals from a grounds up approach with next gen hardware.

There have been a lot of great games that have gotten the remake treatment over the years and for the most part they have all hit it out of the park (FF7 and RE2 come to mind.) so hopefully Dead Space follows in those same foot steps... or at least the limbs left behind.

😉

@videogameninja: I like the entire series(even the most hated Dead Space 3)I really would have been cool if they just remastered the the trilogy, but I'm definitely down for a remake!

@MarcRecon: I think Dead Space 2 got a lot of critical acclaim and it definitely felt more "action oriented" than the rest but 3 was right up there for me personally in terms of fun.

I think 3 got an unfair shake due to both the commercial and critical acclaim of Dead Space 2.

If you really look at 3 it did everything 2 did but slightly better. However, in videogame land making a game that is only marginally better than its predecessor doesn't usually bode well for garnering more acclaim.

Think of the difference between let's say Street fighter to Street fighter 2 vs Street fighter 2 to street fighter 2 champion edition. As such, I think Dead Space 3 felt victim to this.

I was actually interested to see where the story would go after 3 but alas we never got it. Perhaps if this remake is a success it will signal to the higher ups that there is still a tremendous amount of interest in the franchise.

Dead Space games still hold well to this day (with arguable exceptions like ... you know). They have big shoes to fill, at least they went with a jaw dropping engine. Hope they put guys who can use it... Visceral struggled with it and BF Hardline.

@climhazard5: there are divided opinions about Dead Space 3 being the one that doesn't hold up well. It is weaker than 1 & 2 no doubt, but I can't deny I like the game.

But everyone trash Dead Space Ignition with bad reviews and Oblivion :P

I think this is good news, regardless of the odds, as there at least now exists the possibility that something worthwhile could at last be done with this IP.

@justthetip: with some other game company i would argue against - they could have used the time and resources much better than this.

but its ea. what else were they going to do? shitty Gaas dead space 4? madden 2021.5? buy smaller studios with the money and call their games made by ea? remake some need for speed instead? absolutely nothing and give bonus to managers once the microtransaction valves of yearly games allows it? this remake is like a chef making you a dish from leftovers when theres 5 minutes of restaurant open time left.

This will be a shadow of its former glory. Ea sucks and Motive somehow sucks even more. All hopes for this franchise died with the studio that made it great.

UGG sucks to get a remake!!

I already played the trilogy, i want something new!!

Double dipping fools, between this and the turd of ME, EA is getting rich by double dipping fools!!

Game died when they tried to make it CO-OP to sell extra copies of the game, the best thing about killing necromorphs is by yourself.

Needs more exploding babies!!!

Sincerely hope they fulfill the original vision of it being full co-op, sucks they had to cut that from the original to keep the graphics looking good. We didn't get it until 3, and everyone knows 3 wasn't as good as the others.

@skyhighgam3r: 3 was great, except for the co-op. That was the exact problem with it. You cannot have a scary game with co-op. As soon as you add another person playing along side you, the horror element is gone. It happened with Resident Evil 5/6 as well. No horror game should be co-op.

@justthetip: Resident Evil 5 and 6 were not scary - Period -. It had nothing to do with co-op. There's no reason 2 people can't be scared. If that was true, couples wouldn't be watching horror movies together.

You just have to do it right, and they have flat out failed miserably at the idea thus far. It's not because it "doesn't work". It's because they are idiots.

@justthetip: re5 was plenty enough horror. mutants ripped your partners head off or melted your face with acid.

yes its not scary if you play it with a friend in daylight while drinking beers and sodas. but thats got nothing to do with the game itself. if i play dead space like that its the same

re6 had a "kill monster" button so that pretty much i agree with.

@skyhighgam3r: the events before that happened. chainsaw weirdos chasing, locust monsters creeping

anyway we can argue this until the end of the time. re5 gave me the same exact feelings as the praised amnesias, original re, condemned, silent hill and more did.

ds3 i didnt even play because even during ds2 i felt like the game has no purpose or point and i just forced myself to get to the end and still didnt feel like any more sequels are needed. ds1 was amazing.

@Thanatos2k: It would if they would do it right. Everytime they do that nonsense they try to make the game an action title to keep the player(s) interested. If you just put a player 2 in RE:2 Remake and kept the resources barely above standard it would be fine.

They don't do that though, they **** it up like idiots every time.
