Deadpool Movie Review

Earning that "R"

You’ll know from the opening scene if the Deadpool movie is for you. If a tracking shot through freeze-framed, close-quarters carnage while the title sequence credits people like "an entirely CGI character" and "a British villain" set to Juice Newton’s Angel of the Morning doesn’t do it for you, I'm sorry to say you’re in for a pretty rough hour and a half.

But let's assume you're sticking with it. Good. Because Deadpool is a movie that feels totally in sync with its target audience. Lucky for me, I’m in that target audience. Hell, I might be the bullseye at the center of that target audience.

It's gratuitously violent. It’s puerile, crass, meta and it goes to the ends of the earth to earn that R rating. In short, it's everything Deadpool should be.

Here's a brief history of Deadpool: Ex-special forces Wade Wilson gets terminal cancer. A shady military-industrial plot point cures him, in the process giving him amazing regenerative powers, horrible disfigurement and a raging case of the crazies. Now he puts on a red and black suit and kills people.

It's the same Wade Wilson you might remember (but probably don’t) from 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, also played by Ryan Reynolds. In that movie, Wade is also experimented on and turned into something referred to as, yet entirely different from Deadpool, so that doesn’t really count.

It's okay if you're not up to speed on any of that; director Tim Miller expertly parcels out exposition in flashbacks as a break from the main plotline. Most of these take place before Wade dons the red and black mask, and provide some much-needed breathing room from Deadpool carving a bloody, irreverent path through countless mooks in his quest for revenge. It's still a superhero origin story (and a reboot at that), but by starting the middle of the story and working backwards it does it almost accidentally.

Prior to Deadpool, Miller's biggest claim to fame was this trailer for Arkham Origins. You'd be forgiven for walking into Deadpool with low expectations, but Miller does a masterful job at making sure the backstory doesn’t get in the way of the violence and the comedy. Because really, that’s what we came for.

Yes, Deadpool is a superhero movie. It's an action movie. But first and foremost, Deadpool is a comedy.

No Caption Provided

It's sprinkled with jokes for long-time fans, but not so many you'll sit stony-faced while your friend in the Deadpool shirt is laughing at every other line. The jokes are more in line with, "Man, Green Lantern was a shitty movie," than, "How about Liefeld and those leg pouches?"

Also sacrificed on the altar of comedy: Hugh "Wolverine" Jackman, Ikea, 20th Century Fox, and Ryan Reynold's career. Just like the comic book version, the fourth wall is no boundary for cinematic Deadpool, who addresses the audience with little tidbits like exactly what favors he had to perform to get his own movie.

The bulk of the comedy is scattershot, with everything from juvenile slapstick to '80s pop culture references. It's all delivered in such rapid-fire succession that you wind up laughing at everything--even things like worn out "how I got my secret identity" gags that normally wouldn’t even merit a chuckle.

Even the fight scenes are played for laughs, with one notable exception feeling like Bugs Bunny by way of Tarantino. That exception takes place in one of the origin story flashbacks, and get ready for some emotional whiplash. Wade is still delivering quips, but I was glad to see the character's original, sardonic edges start to show. The tortured past is well-trod ground in superhero fiction, but in Deadpool it was practically a necessity to give him a little (but not too much) depth.

No Caption Provided

Deadpool is backed up by three of his own comic regulars, Vanessa Carlysle, Blind Al, and Weasel. Providing a more literal backup is X-Man Colossus (who you might have heard of) and his protege Negasonic Teenage Warhead (who you probably haven't heard of, but now really wish you had).

In any other movie Colossus (he’s the 7-foot-tall dude with metal skin. You can't miss him) and his earnest, heavily accented moralizing would be the sleeper favorite. But Deadpool’s supporting cast is so pitch perfect that it's honestly hard to choose. Wade's romantic relationship with Morena Baccarin’s Vanessa is probably one of the best to be captured in a superhero movie, and it's done over the course of a handful of scenes and one excellent montage. Blind Al and Weasel give repartee as good as they get.

There are issues, sure. It's still an origin story, and you'll get your obligatory navel-gazing until Wade finally cowboys up and goes after the girl. Two mostly forgettable villains. A whole pack of jokes about pooping.

But the movie is just so fun that you won't care about them. For better or worse, this is the best Deadpool movie anyone could have asked for. Just make sure you really understand what you're asking for.

"Oh no, there's no score, I've got no other choice than spending three minutes actually reading the review then! I could of course just, given that I'm so incredibly busy, just read the introduction and concluding paragraphs... but, I'm not even sure what those things mean!"

@mesome713: scores are used so people can quickly scan and move on, allowing for slightly more traffic, has nothing to do with an increase in quality, and in fact can undermine the position the review takes.

@mesome713: which would make sense if they regulated anything. Literally the only reason they exist is to make it so you don't have to read the review, which is why people think a 7/10 (which is an above average score) is a bad score, and why people get pissed that games or movies which score below an 8 even when they thoroughly deserve a sub-8 score are bad....

Scores are for people who can't/don't want to read an informed opinion, therefore making it easier to form their own biases. Which is why it doesn't surprise me in the least that you prefer it that way.

:)

@dnsfw_jamus:

Well said. Scores are a detriment to the gaming industry in general, and Metacritic is a terrible metric to use when trying to look for "good" games. Personally, I read a handful of reviews for anything I have a modicum of interest in, and if it sounds like it delivers what I am expecting, then I will invest in it.

People place too much faith in an arbitrary number that is, at the end of the day, close to meaningless. I mean what's the difference between a 7.8 and an 8? How does one begin to justify how they calculated that score, instead of just slapping an 8 on it and calling it a day? And so on and so forth.

@dnsfw_jamus: They help us gauge reviewers and compare them all to one another. They give the reviewer another way to express their opinion. Another way for the reader to understand and get a general ball park of where the reviewers opinions lie. Plus many more.

@mesome713: 1) the same can also be done by just reading the reviews and comparing their wording. also this is just an extension of one of the above reasons 2) diluting an opinion to points plus and minus isnt a way of expressing an opinion it's a way of limiting an opinion. Also something listed above. Neither of which are good enough reasons to negate the aforementioned bad ones.

3) it wouldn't matter if 99.99% of the planet preferred review scores. Any more than it would if 99.99% of the planet preferred drinking bleach. It's still toxic.

@mesome713: also the fact that there are more people (quite a few more people) defending the choice not to use a score than there are people whining about there not being one, kinda negates your assertion that "most" people like scores.

@EcksTheory: I enjoy the reading, in fact scoring systems have little to do with what choices I make in the way of games, literature, television shows (etc) I read quite often...probably more then any other hobby besides gaming of course. Not everyone that visits a game site and scrolls down to the pros/cons and the review number cant read or "doesn't want to" a bit generalization there huh ?

I really wish Gamespot would do more reviews like this.

I love how the lack of any score is pissing so many people off. Imagine if people actually had to READ videogame reviews instead of going by some retarded arbitrary number.

@razrabbit: People don't read video game reviews ? (Cause I read quite often...books, series, comics/graphic novels, online...etc) and whenever I check out a new game release...of course I look at the number but along with that I scan the review one paragraph at a time to get a "feel" of how this game plays based on anothers opinion...furthermore I check the pros/cons afterwards as sort of a 'wrap-up' conclusion for a lack of better words...unless its a game I am really interested in and looking FORWARD to the review, I may not read the entire review...though most of the big titles, or anticipated ones I've read numerous reviews from several publication sites...I guess I don't pay enough attention to the comments sections to realize that there is this new trend of not reading reviews and basing a purchase solely off of a # lol...interesting

Yeah where is the review score for this movie? If you gonna do a review and you use a score system for your reviews then give the a damn number at the end of your review. I'm never sure what to think when Gamespot is doing reviews because they are very famous when they are doing their game reviews talking about and telling you how good the game is and then at the end of their review you thinking the game is gonna get a score in the 9s they end up giving the game a ridiculous awfully low number.

@razrabbit: No way, that's far too deep to think on. They likely just forgot to put a 8 up there to piss people off. No way on earth would they ever expect people to form their own opinions as some sort of life lesson like "Diff'rent folks diff'rent strokes".

@tony56723: Well i did read it and i still would like a number because they use a score system for their reviews so they should stick with it. Gamespot has struggled through the years with their reviews and matching scores with what they tell you in the video review or what they wrote in their reviews. It almost felt like the guy was scared of giving a number.

@brazprince: If they actually stick to the no-score format for the entire site from now on, then fine, change it but I have a feeling they'll have plenty more reviews with a score. An inconsistent, unorganized website would be terrible.

@virtuasega: to you maybe, to me they;re all trash every single one of em.....no real continuity between em, always a history lesson, always some origin, dumbed down stories and they don't even embrace the source as much as they should.....

after the first few MCU films they should have went with that style......each hero get their own film, don't do Wolverine cus everyone now knows his past, Cyclops & jean Grey, Beast, Colossus and Storm, in each you show bits of professor and magnus recruiting mutants to their side and some of the inner workings of the Brotherhood and Xavior School then after Storm you do X-Men and really get into the nuts and bolts of it and have the 2 sides fight but having the X-Men locked into it's own universe is BS cus 90% of the enemies in the greater Marvel Universe they can't use.....Thanos, Mandarin, Red Skull, Hydra, Advanced idea Mechanics [AIM] even some of the aliens the X-Men have fought turned up in MCU LMAO and MCU can't even refer to mutants as mutants....they;re different, genetic, metas? pfft

with their stunted universe it's hard to really get on board with it....but i've been underwhelmed by the X-Men movies since even the first one in what 2000? lolz

@virtuasega: Incorrect, I know they're different things but when you write in crap that never happened or never would happen or just plain bad pacing for a film then your film is junk plain and simple......

their universe for X-Men is bad......poorly written, poorly executed and a small universe really cus like I said 90% of Marvel universe is locked out to em......

I don't expect 1:1 ratio to the comics in film but I do expect some decent stories and plots in the films...and a good setup of the heroes and villains not hammer over the head history lessons that don't matter....

plus I do acknowledge that the Deadpool film may be worth watching......

@MJ12-Conspiracy: Ummm, after reading your last few post you still haven't learned that movies aren't the comics, things might change, etc etc. The movies were good, sequels were made because people liked them, the second movie was considered the best comic book movie at that time, your boring nerd drivel was old before you posted it.

@virtuasega: Right Mr. Expert so the X-Men movies were good right???

so good entails a subpar plot revolving around kidnapping a US senator and turning him into a halfassed mutant who dies as a result then kidnap a mutant to sacrifice so you uyourself don;t have to die to enact your plan which is to turn all humans into mutants which would in turn kill everyone cus the prcess doesn't work???

a sequel about a man who despises mutants and uses his mutant son to IDK what.....then Jean goes Phoenix and Xavior stops time to gain the trust of the prez......right....

then another sequel about mutants staging some revolt to again try and turn all humans into mutants? IDK wasn't paying attention and some mutants just wanted a cure for their condition so now being a mutant is like having a disease???

then a prequel dealing with Wolverine that retcons the entire trilogy but has some interesting bits but is ultimately ruined by the ending where we have a battle between Logan and Not-Deadpool.....

this is a wonderful film series to you?????? you wouldn't know a good film if it bit you in your ass if you think this trash was good......

@aegis_kleais: Reynolds basically played Deadpool almost in every movie he's ever been in

@Skat0rzZzz: Exactly. A one trick pony. And the trick is akin to walking in its own manure. Go Reynolds for showing you have as much depth in character acting as the plotline is original.

Fox please don't taint this buy linking him to your other subpar comic book movies. Just let this one live in its own universe please!

@syntaxkt: Exactly. I'm tired of people calling it an X-Men spin-off too. This isn't the character from Origins; it's a 4th wall Deadpool, his own movie, and yeah fully agree, they should keep it that way, even go as far as to cast their own Wolverine with their own costume and such if it ever comes to that (which, I know, will never happen)

@bakula: Fox has to call it an X-Men spinoff so that they can make it with the IP rights they have.
