Diablo III game director steps down

Longtime developer Jay Wilson leaving game after seven years; will transition into new role at Blizzard in the next few weeks.

After seven years working on Diablo III, Jay Wilson is leaving his post as game director for the dungeon-crawler. Wilson announced the news today in a blog post, noting the time is right to move on to a new project within Blizzard Entertainment.

No Caption Provided

"I recently celebrated my seven-year anniversary working on Diablo III, and while it's been one of the most challenging and rewarding periods of my life, I've reached a point creatively where I'm looking forward to working on something new," Wilson said. "The powers that be at Blizzard have been gracious enough to give me that opportunity. Over the course of the next several weeks, I will be moving off of the Diablo III project and transitioning elsewhere within Blizzard. This decision was not an easy one for me, and not one I made quickly, but ultimately it's what I feel is right."

Wilson made clear that his departure from the Diablo III development team "will not negatively impact our ongoing support of Diablo III." He said there is "lots" planned for the future of the game and that he will make himself available to the development team during the transition period. A new game director for Diablo III has not been announced, though Wilson said Blizzard is eager to find a replacement and learn what "fresh ideas they can bring to the table."

Wilson said he is proud of Diablo III and will miss the community that has formed around it, though he did admit his relationship with fans was not without its faults.

"I feel I have made many mistakes in managing that relationship, but my intent was always to provide a great gaming experience and be as open and receptive as possible, while still sticking true to the vision the Diablo team has for the game," he said.

Wilson also acknowledged that many may believe Blizzard fell short of its promise to release Diablo III "when it's ready." He said Blizzard always tries to make decisions based on information and knowledge present at the given time, though this is not an ideal situation.

"That doesn't mean we always make the right decisions, but if we made a mistake then I feel we've made an exceptional effort to correct it," he said.

Wilson ended his farewell note saying there are "great things" in the pipeline for Diablo III in 2013, though he did not specify what these might be.

"I'm leaving Diablo III in good hands, and my departure will not jeopardize the progress of the game as we continue to do what we do: listen, play, and improve," he said.

Diablo III launched in May 2012, was a top Google search for the year, and has sold over 10 million copies to date. The game shipped without its player-versus-player mode, and it does not appear this feature will be added anytime soon. Wilson said in late December that Diablo III PVP is stalled, noting Blizzard is going back to the drawing board to conceive something better.

Wilson is proud of Diablo 3 and the mess it has become. He's now ready to implement a more sophisticated and creatively engineered RMAH on other Blizzard games.

@hibikino Actually RMAH is the least thing that made D3 bad. From the story, the game play, the inability to distribute point upon leveling, the removal skill tree.... blah blah blah

Pro: Finally Diablo 3 has a slight chance to redeem itself.

Con: Looks like another Blizzard title going down the drain.

"Wilson made clear that his departure from the Diablo III development team "will not negatively impact our ongoing support of Diablo III."

Of course it will not impact it negatively, that can be only positive! I could pick a homeless dude within 5 minutes who would make a better job than him. He screwed up everything he could... everything from the game mechanics to his "famous" monk, the worst class in the game imho. He is proud of the community that formed around D3... well yeah, most of that community actually formed around D1 and D2. If it was only about D3, the community would be 10% of its size.

7 years well spent, Wilson, now go to lick somebody's a$$ so you get a new game to manage. Let's see which is the poor title you will fok up next!

@poco_none The community that formed around D3.

Suggesting it's a different community to the one that enjoyed D1 and D2. Probably is, too...because those guys wised up and left.

@Dragon_Nexus you may be right, but in that case the community is not that huge. I have loved diablo since 15-16 years ago when I touched d1 for the 1st time. I am still around in d3, I guess I am just too loyal. But I definitely don't enjoy it like the previous two.

It seems like i'm the only one who enjoyed Diablo 3 to some degree. Sure, it wasn't near as good as Diablo 2 was, but it was an overall fun game. I don't know of anyone who can say that they hated the game when they first played it. I loved it all the way till about act 2 on inferno. It was then that I realized, unless I start using the auction house (which I think should be took OUT) I wasn't going to progress anymore. Now, have I played it anymore since then? Well, no. But my point is, up until then I enjoyed every moment of it. It is a game that I think was well worth $60, and a game that I think everyone should experience. Now, I can see why so many people dislike Diablo 3. Simply because its not Diablo 2. Something the developers wanted was for Diablo 3 to be completely different from 2, but the majority of Diablo fans didn't want that. If they would have gave us a 99 level cap, and let us have talent points, like Diablo 2 did, then maby that alone, could save this dying game. Overall I loved the game, but I admit, after Inferno, it gests....repetitive.

God why Blizzard changed so much? Is it because of the merge with the Devil (Activision)? Is it because it was bought by Vivendi? I don't know but I miss the old Blizzard up until 2002 the company was one of my favourite. The same way I mourn Bioware's death, I mourn Blizzard now!

Well, it's still too late for an offline version of Diablo III, so it's not like it's going to fix the game with a new director.

In case you didn't know, game directors do not stay in that position for life. That's like thinking movie directors never move on to directing new movies.

Diablo 3 just may get better now. Blizzard needs to hire the old Blizzard North team for the expansion to fix this mess.

@ecs33 Blizzard needs to get away from Activision's cluthces. Even if the old Blizzard North steps in, activision would just dictate what money grubbing design they want into the games.

@Yagami-san @ecs33 Vivendi (The company that has owned Blizzard for over a decade almost 2 now) is the majority shareholder for the company. Stop blaming one side of the merger for what has happened to its franchises. Did you ever stop to think that Blizzard is complicit in all of this or are you too much of a fan boy to not see the truth. You can make the argument that Kotick is the head of Activision-Blizzard but he still has to answer to Vivendi and they have to answer to their board.

@Yagami-san @Addice @ecs33 Gamer friendly like rushing out a MMO that was not ready? Where the servers were broken for the first week. Where content that was promised at release was only implemented later on. So friendly that they made Rag and Ony unkillable to stifle progression. Prior to the merger, most of the games were released when the gaming industry was not as robust. EA used to put out quality games too.

I will concede that the SC2 thing can be credited to Kotick. There was an interview with him where he said he wanted to test the threshold of what gamers would spend.

@Addice @Yagami-san @ecs33 Compare blizzard products before and after the merger with Activision. You don't need to be a top notch analyst to see the disparity. Pre-Activision blizzard games were gamer-friendly. That was the time you can trust the name "Blizzard". Well their games are still good today, however their business designs and practices are shit. Aside from D3, look at SC2 being sold as 3 FULL SEPERATE games. Those 2 additional games could have been just an expansion.

@Yagami-san @ecs33 yea this game is screwed bro, its no longer P2W now if u got deep pockets you can buy all the best gear and be #1 ladders and HC or anythin would not matter as competition its just lost to its own lust, the chances of you gathering all your gear and it being good in d3 are slim to none in other words the game itself forces you to use the AH like it or not and you really wanna be in a inviroment like that i dont think so i say F that.

Also, in my opinion, it wouldn't have mattered who was directing this game during its development. Activision would have forced the always online and auction house design anyway. This game was doomed from the day activision bought blizzard.

finally he got fired from D3 but then he doubled his chin and got rehired for his new game auction house tycoon RMAH 4, its also rumored he is working on RMAH for Sc2 which allows the hot new feature to pay $250 dollars to blizzard to spawn a an extra drone and other units at the start. He is also working on TITAN to turn it yet into another WoW expo which includes RMAH. Jay Wilson also took a dump recently and called it D3 patch 1.0.7.

I hope this game would serve as an example to gamers. Placing an always online DRM on a non MMO game is not acceptable and will only serve to punish paying customers. Vote with your wallet guys.

I still play d3, its got a lot better with patches, granted its still got a lot of room for improvement, but look how different d2 was after expansions and patches.

That being said I'm glad that someone other than Jay Wilson has a chance to address the problems d3 still has, a fresh perspective could do wonders (I'm hoping)
