DICE 'very interested' in Battlefield 4 eSports

Developer says it is looking at competitive gaming support for upcoming military shooter; game won't have any co-op.

DICE is "very interested" in eSports support for Battlefield 4, according to studio general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson.

No Caption Provided

"I can say that eSports is an area that we are very interested in," Troedsson told Leutin09 in a new video interview posted on YouTube.

Troedsson did not go into any further detail, as only Battlefield 4's single-player has been revealed that far. Still, he explained that eSports is a growing phenomenon and that it will be no easy task to pull it off in the final product.

"It's not as easy as some game developers like to think; that's it's just that you do A, X, Y, and Z and everything is done. It's actually much bigger than that now," Troedsson said. "There are some people that actually see this as a new phenomenon and that's not true either. It's been around for a long time. It's just recently that it's really starting to take off…"

Troedsson further explained that Battlefield multiplayer has always been "very competitive" and "the heart" of every new installment in the series.

"And that won't change moving forward," he said.

Also during the interview, Troedsson revealed that Battlefield 3's cooperative mode will not return for Battlefield 4. "We don't have co-op in Battlefield 4. We have made that decision. We're focusing everything we have on multiplayer and the single-player," he said.

Battlefield 4 launches this fall for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, but not Wii U. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

I have a doubt, BF4 will be released for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, but if you click on "follow" here, it will give the option to follow the PS4 and Wii U versions.... My point is, if later on, DICE makes a PS4 and Xbox 720 versions, it will likely be a port, right ? As the PC version is the main platform, maybe we will need to wait until the next gen consoles to get released and see how these ports comes out, because next year I want to spend my money on the right platform, the one that gives me the best open map FPS..... PC is winning already with ARMA 3, so, instead of spending $450 + or - on a console, maybe PC will be the better way... Consoles are improving themselves year after year by making better FPS games, but I won't buy a new gen if the only thing available in the first months will be only ports! Let's wait what Xbox 720 has to say !

No LAN mode = No competitive merit. If BF4 still doesnt have a LAN option then forget it ever being recognized in the eSports world. Playing shooters online in a tournament setting is far to random to have any merit.

@SaviorXavi3r This is 2013. You can connect 20 PC's in the same room to the internet. You don't need LAN anymore. Playing shooters in a tournament setting online is far to random? How so? I've been playing FPS's in tournaments online for the last 15 years of my life. What the hell are you talking about?

Not having co-op in BF4 is a big mistake imo. Co-op is fun, a nice way to practice using things like choppers when new to the game, and a great way to meet other players in a neutral setting.

Very poor decision imo - co-op is still, to this day, quite active in BF3. They should improve on it, not ignore it. Really dumb move imo - very disappointed in them.

@duderdave If the co op on BF3 had 300 missions I would be playing it until today and maybe I would spend less time on multiplayer ! Co op is so fun because everytime we mess up, there's the whole responsibility about the other guy being screwed too, which it can't happen in multiplayer with that intensity ! That's the greatness of Co op !

I'm really looking forward to bf4, but im anxious to see how they tie this release in with the opening of the new console generation. I think DICE is an amazing developer, but i hope that they continue to support their games' lifespans and don't end up straying towards the COD franchise (in terms of how frequently they release new installments). Saying that, they did release bf3 in late 2011, so i guess its time for an update, but its gone soo fast, and the game still looks pretty gorgeous.

They said the same thing last time...

...so I'll believe it when I see it. These people will say absolutely anything to peddle their game.

I'm sure they'll still not support LAN or System Link. I hope a few tournaments end in (Cannot connect to EA servers) just to make a point.

The main reason why they let coop go, is because it is broken in some situations in BF3 and don't want to spend any time fixing it.

Ive started playing BF3 and have come to the conclusion that it SUCKS. There are so many bugs in the game is feels lijke skyrim all over. When i'm running and i get stopt by a little pebbel on the road it fucking stupid or when you shoot a rocket or throw a grenade day dissapear when you die. That makes perfect sence. or people homing bullets that go around corners and dont forget the people that stand stil. They are invinceble you can shoot them how much you can not even hitmakkers apear. And no i'm not talking about people that just spawn.

That all for me make it the flop of the year. Way to go EA a nother peace of crap that cost 100 $

No ones cares about the single player experience in Battlefield. In Battlefield multiplayer is where all the fun is at.

@ROEG-GAMER To say thisisto saythat there aren'tpeoplestarving in the worldjust because you havefood to eat.....We have7 billion peoplein the world, but you haveit all figured out, right? Did you put your hands on a BF3 version where the single player experience is vast and well constructed to be able to refute the need of having another one? I don't think so !

@dalua360 @ROEG-GAMER People play the single player? If people want a good FPS single player experience then they are playing the wrong games. Try Metro, Dead Space, Bioshock. BF3 is meant for multiplayer. They should scrap single player all together.

@MTHoodlum423 @dalua360 @ROEG-GAMERI agreethat the gamesyou listedhave greatcampaigns, but whatI meant is:"What if.....", so we never hadthe chance to playa long and great campaigninBF3becauseit does not exist, so we can't say thatno one would careorwould playjust becausethe gamefocuses onmultiplayer!I don't knowif the developerscan'tdo bothin one gamedue to lack ofmemory ormoney, ifthat is the reasonthen I agreetheyhave to cut the singleplayer to make abettermultiplayer, or better, useMAGas an example, and make aONLYmultiplayergame(I'm notsaying thatMAGis good),beside that, look atthe example ofCODgames, where peoplealwaysask for longer and bettercampaign stories, that means most playerswould enjoyboth things on a FPS game most known for its multiplayer side!To be honest,I wishthatDICEtook theMedal OfHonor series and make it only singleplayer (totally remodeled of course), andBF3 would be onlyco-opandmultiplayer focused....

To argue about these things here is just a way to socialize and make friends because it doesn't matter what we want or think, they will develop in their way no matter what, and I think nowit's too late, because the game islikely to be inalpha test already.

CO OP is a perfect fit for Battlefield franchise but only problem was it she a shoehorned in. I mean they can properly implement co-op by making the 2nd,3rd or 4th player taking controls of one of the other players in the squad. Now that the squad is not faceless like before.

Hope they have eSports type servers. I gotta say that Black Ops 2 putting the League Play in was pretty damn nice if you played the solo league. I found that it had better player matching than anything ever before. I suck at the game but was actually managing to get on the top of the leaderboard because putting in an effort actually payed off, because everybody was of similar skill. I can honestly say it as the ONLY time I had complete fun playing COD instead of just bouncing back and forth between it being *kinda* fun but mostly frustrating. What breaks player matching is the party system. That is the main reason that TrueSkill and Zones have never really worked for the 360 as advertised, even though they were great ideas.

@joqqy @Bayonetta2013 That's the thing, IF it was actually going to be a proper Mirror's Edge game, hell yeah! But I could easily see it being a "re-imagining". And just like any genre that had it's own flavor 5 years ago before drifting more and more to the PointAPointB Shoot Everything genre, it's unique twist would be toned down and the gun play turned up so that by time it was done, the only way you would know it was Mirror's Edge, is because of the title. I can think a lot of awesome games that took that route within the last few years.

Why don't they focus on putting "everything" into multiplayer instead of also into a 5 hour graphics performance utility?

@benbrooky13 Maybe now it won't be 5 hours anymore.....maybe it's 8, 9 or 10 hours! Since they're focusing all their efforts in singleplayer and multiplayer without coop...

@SIDEFX1 I used to like it, until Battlefield 3 came along. Sure, the Bad Company series had the same campaign kind of deal, but they were spin-offs, I could live with that. But why BF3 and now BF4? There's a reason that mods for BF2 like AIX and BF2SP64 existed, after all :P
